Pailin is famous for it gems and Memoria Palace & Resort is one of them. Surrounded by the most lush nature, Memoria Palace's rooms are well appointed and quite unexpected for the location. The resort is a work in progress. So, you can only expect it to get better in the future.
The resort in only 4 hours from Bangkok and 3 hours from Pattaya or Rayong. For expats on a visa run from any of these places, you can make an overnight excursion out of your Thai visa run or a long weekend. Memoria is only a few kilometers from the Ban Pakkard border crossing.
Surrounded by the foot hills of the Cardamon Mountains, the area offers access to one of Cambodia's most pristine protected areas. From here you can go kayaking, visit waterfalls or dirt bike to Koh Kong on the ocean.

stayed here during a work visit to pailin.
grounds and amenities are ok but a long walk over rough cobblestones to the room - at night is poorly lighted - risky for ankles!
staff were pleasant enough but not too efficient - asked for breakfast at 0630hrs but that didnt happen. needed internet at that time too - ditto.
kinda pricy too

will be my last visit to this facility

Room Tip: try to find one closer to the desk and avoid the challenge of walking in the dark

The property is set among the hills close to the Cambodia / Thailand border in Pailin Cambodia. We had mountain biked about 90K in searing heat and were exhausted. The staff met us with cold beer and snacks and we sat in the open air cabana under a fan to recuperate. It was heaven! The rooms were delightful, starkly modern with 10 foot ceilings and a luxurious bathroom. When you walked in, they had lemon grass scent aromatherapy which was a really nice smell. The owner took the time to talk with us about what he is doing. He speaks perfect English and is very articulate. He is one of those souls in this world who is really making a difference. The land where the hotel sits used to be a Khmer Rouge stronghold. The pool was a weapons cache. The owner has now transformed all of it into gardens and paths. He hires local people to work in his establishment and trains, feeds and houses them. He had to clear 120 landmines to build. Wow. The absolute best part is that he sometimes lets some of the local kids swim in the swimming pool. We happened to be swimming there at the same time. To hear the kids laughing and playing and screaming and considering the land's past, it was pure beauty. If you get a chance, stay here. Your soul will be nurtured.

It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to stay at Memoria. Overall, the property is gorgeous and peaceful. This is an excellent place to relax. Most of the noise comes from the birds and wildlife in the area.

The owner and the staff are very attentive and friendly. I appreciated the time the owner took to come over and chat when we were in the restaurant. He takes special interest in the well being of his guests and is very proud to show off the gardens surrounding the property or talk about the history of the area.

The resort is set up over a spacious property so that you don't feel like you are staying right next to all the other guests. In fact, if not for meal time, I hardly saw or heard the other guests except for mornings and evenings. The pathways are laid out so that you are able to stroll along rather than just go from one place to another. Every part of the resort has new sights to see and appreciate.

The downside of the resort is that the room we stayed in is that some things seem to be poorly planned. The bathroom could used better planning and fixtures as the shower head is not very easy to use and sprays out like little knives. The sink outside the bathroom was adorably heart shaped but leaked underneath creating a pool of water when used too much. The room is very minimalistic using wood bedframes and shelves in a tasteful design. Unfortunately, the insects are eating them away leaving piles of dust. The sliding glass door never locked allowing anyone access even if the main door to the room was locked. The curtains seemed like they were a last minute addition as parts were pinned and the length was uneven. The resort is still a work in progress.

The plus side to Memoria is that it's outside of town, but not too far. There's plenty to see and do when it comes to nature and outdoors. Be sure to plan your tour itinerary as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made in plenty of time. If you enjoy serious trekking, you're in luck, as it's very easy to arrange. If you like offroad dirtbike riding, then this is also an option, but make sure you come prepared with your own gear and helmet as it's likely not to be available.

If you're more of a low impact visitor, then there are several fruit farms, orchards and plantations close by to visit. Additionally, the local pagodas are a great place to see everyday life of Cambodians, particularly during special occasions and festivals. Additionally, there are several other Cambodian-style resorts to enjoy. Getting there can be a bit adventurous unless you have a car.

The great thing about the resort is that you can just hang out at the pool or in any one of many cottages or gazebos on the property. There's a lovely little library with some history books and DVDs to borrow if you want to watch a movie in your room.

If you are not familiar or do not enjoy Cambodian food, then you had better bring your own snacks. Memoria has an excellent kitchen that makes only Cambodian food. It is delicious, but may not suit every visitor's palate.

Room Tip: Rooms are very spacious and comfortable with most a short walk to the reception and restaurant.

The resort has been planted beautifully and the lodging is luxurious and nestled away so that you can listen to the birds and sounds of nature. The pool is amazing with great views over the valley. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Great activity guide in the room. The owner is inspirational with his deep desire and action to bring a community divided by a long conflict back together and reverse the damage from deforestation. We stopped here after a long bike ride from Battembang and found a small paradise.

This resort has wonderful views of the mountains and valleys outside Pallin City .We found the staff and manicured grounds to be far beyond our expectations. The salt water pool and its views were very refreshing and hard to leave. The food at the restaurant was excellent with all vegetables and spices grown on the property . Will be back for sure !

Room Tip: All rooms have wonderful views and are very large

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Memoria Palace & Resort is an eco-tourism resort located in the foothills of the Cardamom Mountains of Pailin, Cambodia. The resort spans over 13 lush hectares and features 16 beautiful bungalow rooms, 3 unique traditional style thatched eco-lodges, a hilltop saltwater swimming pool, open space restaurant & outdoor bar, and conference room/rehearsal studio. Memoria is a hidden getaway with inviting appeal, magnificent views across the countryside, fresh clean air and an invigorating breeze coming off the mountains. Our location provides the perfect environment for a variety of retreats, peaceful relaxation, personal rejuvenation or adventurous outdoor activities. Pailin province, known for gem mining, is a peaceful rural town unspoilt by modern development that allows visitors a glimpse into the real Cambodian life of the once war-torn area. Easily accessible from Chanthaburi via the Ban Pakard/Phsa Prum Border which is free from the scams and hassles of Poipet or Koh Kong, Pailin offers you an alternative way to enter/exit Cambodia with good roads allowing easy access to Koh Chang, Rayong, Pattaya, Bangkok, Battambang, Siem Reap, and Phnom Penh. It's also an ideal place to base yourself for sightseeing, cycling, hiking and trekking excursions and guided tours into the Cardamom Mountains, one of Southeast Asia's best preserved wilderness areas which hosts an abundance of unique species as well as some of the few remaining populations of endangered animals once common to South East Asia. We are committed to turning this once war-torn area into a responsible tourism destination, by offering a brighter future to the younger generation in Pailin, thus protecting the local people - be they our staff or from the local communities - from the negative impact of tourism is one of our highest priorities. We also support all kinds of wildlife protection initiatives, thus sale of wild animals or foods and products derived from them is strictly prohibited on our premises. Whether on a visa run, on holiday, on a tour of Cambodia or in search of a wilderness adventure, you will always find a warm welcome at Memoria Palace & Resort. ... more   less
