“Nice resort, friendly staff”
Reviewed April 18, 2014 via mobile

We were lucky to book last minute (Holy Week) at this resort in Baler! Rustic laidback design, clean rooms, friendly staff. Restaurant has good food--try the mojo's or Aliya chips and definitely the grilled pusit!!

Owner was friendly too! He was really there watching over the resort operations. :)

We went to Baler because the kids wanted to surf! Amazing drive through the Sierra Madre Mountains with stunning views. I can't wait to go there again when we have more time. The staff are friendly, courteous and very helpful. The views were great and the rooms good. Great place to get a surfing lesson or two at P350 per hour.

Family bonding during the holidays is not an easy feat with all the parties, the gift giving, and the hassles and bustle of the hectic Christmas activities. So right after Christmas, the whole family went on an out of town trip to Baler, Quezon. The travel from Metro Manila was quite long through North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and TPLEX. After 3hours drive, we exited to Pantabangan Dam and went through 5 mountain ranges and through the dam itself. Quite scenic despite the long drive. Finally, we reached Aliya Surf Camp & Resort tucked in the inner roads of Baler and along the coast facing the Pacific Ocean. For 3 days we stayed and basked in the splendor of the sunrise, the sunset and the beautiful undulating waves of the ocean carrying to and fro the surfers,....the beginners, the pros and even the amateurs. It was an idyllic vacation. While the resort isn't a first class hotel in terms of accomodations, we had everything we needed, fresh towels, fresh linens, good food, reasonable prices and on top of the list....a beautiful and direct view of the beach, the waves and the clear ocean.

Room Tip: The second and third floor rooms have a little more privacy than the ground floor rooms.

I stayed here for three nights. Unfortunately the owners don't appear to be keeping up with maintenance on the hotel. The rooms are dark and dreary, the bathroom was in a virtual state of collapse and the towels/sheets were not changed in the three days I was there.
In the evening I visited the hotels down the road for dinner where there is a better selection. Unfortunately on the way back there are four dogs at the neighbours property who seem to have developed a pack mentality and will chase / try to bite you (particularly if it's dark).
I recommend staying down the road at the newly developed Costa Pacific resort which has only just opened and is in prime condition.
Booking a room was also difficult - response was slow to confirm bookings ( I should have taken the hint at that point).
One good thing about the Aliya did seem to be that they provided good lessons for learner surfers although I never undertook any myself and the hotel was located close to the ocean.

We stayed for a night in this hotel. Nice beachfront location. We had dinner and breakfast in their beachfront restaurant and they serve good food :)

The only thing I cannot seem to understand is the corkage fee for a bottle of gin which almost the same as the price of the beer and fees for bringing our own chips for snack.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the hotel ground floor for easy access to the restaurant and the beach

The location of Aliya is better among other hotels in the area - spacious, beachfront, not crowded and it has nice view of the ocean. There are some construction going on the third floor but it won’t interrupt your stay as the place is perfectly quiet. We booked three triple sharing rooms for overnight accommodation. The room is seriously plain and almost bare - 2 beds (1 single bed and 1 double bed), 1 bedside table, and television with no remote control. Restroom is okay but there is no shower curtain which makes it impossible to share it with another person and the water pressure is weak. I also noted that the water has a slight off-smell (but this is consistent in the whole town). Only 2 towels and 2 blankets are provided per room. Be mindful of their very strict check-in/check-out policies otherwise you’ll be charged. The experience is averagely fine since we were out most of the time with the exception of breakfast – the quality of the food is so cheap it won’t even pass for a P50-worth of ‘silog meals. If you can’t run from it (since it comes with the accommodation) you may try spamsilog, bangsilog or hotsilog, the rest are inedible. Surfing lesson with their courteous and capable surfers are available at P350/hour. Aliya is the most lively place in Baler at night.

PROS:
1. Location (it's the resort at the farthest end so it's less crowded both on the beach and in the water
2. Food
- Not bad for the price that you pay.
- Get used to having tapsilog (tapa/adobo flakes, egg and garlic rice) for breakfast. Looks like they serve it all the time.
- They even served food in a timely manner - we were expecting bad service from all the blogs and online reviews we read.
3. Room
- Not bad. Bed was ok.
- bathroom was a good size
- Good view of the beach.
4. The place has a nice relaxed vibe.
5. Service at the restaurant was ok.
6. Surf instructors were a lot of fun!

CONS:
1. Early check-in and late check-in will be charged accordingly. They'll even send you a text to remind you to check-out on time otherwise they'll charge you.
2. No closet to keep your things. There are a few small drawers and a small table next to the bed.
3. No safe for valuables.
4. Re: the room's bathroom:
- no toilet paper, we had to ask the staff several times.
- weak water pressure in the shower
- they could put up a shower curtain
5. The public bathroom for the restaurant and other guests - there's only 1 bathroom and it's wet and full of sand, more like an outdoor public restroom.
6. Construction currently on-going on both sides of the resort as well as in the resort itself (a 4th another floor)

Tip:
- If you arrive early in the morning, you can leave your bags at the reception and kill time doing a tour of Baler until the afternoon if you don't want to pay for early check-in.
- Bring toilet paper if you don't want to keep asking the staff about it.

Room Tip: Don't stay on the 1st floor if you want privacy.
