Had lunch here at this old style pub on the village green in a quiet spot off the A259 and near to the South Downs Way. Free parking close by. It was a rare sunny day and the pub was busy, however there was inadequate staff to deal with the numbers. Only one girl serving who was rushed off her feet and did not have time to look after diners. The kitchen also did not keep up. Fortunately we were in a group so the wait of almost an hour for the food (Fish and Chips, not a suffle) was bearable as we had a lot to catch up on, but if it had been just the two of us we would have walked out. It was a great pity as the food when it came was excellent and good value. We would go there again if we could be assured that the service would be improved. Slow service in pubs is too frequent and one reason why we do not eat out more often.

Great room, great evening meal, friendly service in the evening couldn't fault it until breakfast!
Hot Water in a flask doesn't make good tea, toast served 20 minutes before hot breakfast, Luke warm food served on cold plates, watery poached eggs, poor slow service. And we were only ones in the breakfast room so can't use being busy as an excuse. Such a shame as everything else was fantastic!

Just stopped for a small beer at the Tiger Inn today - just worth it for the old style feel of the place, lovely setting on a village green in the sunshine. Have been before, but haven't eaten here yet. Staff were friendly and helpful. When I first visited some years ago they didn't take plastic, but now they do, and although I haven't seen them they now have five rooms, although not wheelchair accessible, above the pub. They do have an accessible WC near the bar so a day or meal out would be possible for some of the people I know.

I only get to visit the Tiger Inn at the end of a long morning walk from the Seven Sisters Country Centre at Exceat, either through the beautiful Friston Forest, or along the cliffs themselves. I've never eaten here, but the food always looks amazing, and the prices are typical for a rural inn menu these days, with so pubs many having closed down for a lack of response to their food offering. Twelve quid for fish and chips may sound a lot, but it's one of the prettiest places in the world you'll get a filling amount of the real thing to eat. Personally, I stick to the ale, which is fabulous and brewed within a long walk of the pub. The service has never been less than professional, in spite of my appearance at busy times and my unwillingness to spend more than I have to. My kids are four and six and love the place, with both waitress and barmaid on a recent visit really going out of their way to be friendly and entertaining, admittedly after much of the lunchtime crowd had dispersed on a rare soggy afternoon. This part of East Dean, nearest the coast, has the look and feel of a Heritage site and indeed the National Trust has a hand in a number of local buildings and attractions. The area is an ideal location for walkers, cyclists and bus travellers, although there is good car parking very close to the pub. You'll also find a tea room, a deli and a restaurant; plus, locals may direct you to a nearby children's playground, tucked away out of sight of the buildings. I'd especially recommend a stroll up a tiny flower-decked valley known as "Hobbs Eares" to the 11th-Century Friston Church, although it's even more fun running back the other way!

Room Tip: If you want a huge bed in a huge room, stay in North America. This is a 15th-century-derived property in a sleepy coastal village. I've never needed to stay here, but the rooms are likely to be four-star dolls-house standard. You will also be sleeping *above a pub* not in a shack six miles from a highway. Bring earplugs if you like an early night.

I visit this pub yearly, it is a great spot and a genuine 'old feel' local inn. I have stayed in the B&B above this year and was extremely impressed with the rooms. The rooms are finished at the highest standard boardering on 'boutique' finish. I had no issue with any noise from the pub below whatsoever due to it being a 'village' style pub so it was low key noise and didn't go on beyond the normal pub hours.

Practical Info:

Beds - fantastic (I would actually buy the bed it was that good!) fantastic sleep
Bathrooms - great showers, clean and practical, nicely decorated
Food - Breakfast was amazing - pub food absolutely fantastic - the only place to eat in the local area as far as i am concerned! I ate here when i stayed at the Belle Tout as it was recommended by the B&B staff for evening meal.
Vibe - can be hit or miss depending on the people visiting the pub. I have been there when it is great, full of locals, busy and friendly. I have been there when there has been rather snooty visitors which can be irrating but this cannot be helped. The pub itself is great - it holds the vibe of a country pub full of character especially when the log fire is on.
Staff - exceptionally friendly and welcoming.

Issues - it gets booked up to a year in advance due to it being so popular with walkers and visitors so you have to really book up in plenty of time.

Price - worth it!

Best time to visit - Any time of the year I have stayed during the cold spring and visited during the summer and autumn. Great for a pub lunch or drink to chill out. Can get really busy on weekends or during the busy season.

Room Tip: Any room they are all done up to the highest spec!
