I booked a relatively last minute stay to celebrate my wife's birthday. Unfortunately we had to cancel the stay and Kath went out of her way to refund my deposit (required new PDQ machine and downloads due to an issue with processing my card).
Service really was exceptional especially when the hotel ended up without a penny from me.
I certainly hope we can re-book very soon.

Superb food, excellent location, wonderful friendly staff, but two fo us left hungry and disappointed.
There are two menu choices, 3 courses for £45, or a taster menu for £50-- that is it. We went for the 3 course option, choice OK, but not particularly extensive, portions very small.
My wife and I are fortunate to be able to dine in top class restaurants, and two courses are usually more than enough for us to 'have had an elegant sufficiency'. I would hoped to have a more extensive choice, the choice of having a starter and a main, or a main course and sweet, but that was not an option. Service was swift, and we had finished our minuscule main course after 45 min, with best part of a bootle of wine waiting to be quaffed- we had ordered two bottles between four.
After stalling the sweet, we still left after ninety minutes, taking our remaining half bottle of red wine home, deciding to finish it with cheese and biscuits at home.
Not exactly a memorable night for the thick end of £250 for four!

This was our first but definitely not the last visit to the Cottage in the Wood, where we stayed for three days in May 2014. We can only add to the previous reviews, praising the excellence of this hotel. Kath and Liam are superb hosts, who, together with all other members of their staff, did their utmost to ensure that our stay was as comfortable, relaxing, and enjoyable as possible. Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel so welcome. Our first night was in the Garden Room, which has a wow factor all its own. We also stayed in a Mountain View room, which was equally comfortable, with great views of the forest and Skiddaw. A lot has already been said about the presentation and quality of meals and we totally concur. The tasting menu has to be tried for an unforgettable gastronomic experience but other 'more normal' dinners (and breakfasts) were first class. Many thanks to everyone at The Cottage.

On booking we were asked to advise the hotel of any food allergies. We exchanged emails and received an assurance that dealing with a nut allergy would not be a problem. However, on dining on the first evening it soon became apparent that the email had been overlooked and the staff were flustered in trying to sort out a suitable tasting menu on the night, something we had tried to prevent in advance. We were very disappointed to have an exact repeat of the situation on our second evening and were initially served canapés containing nuts! We found this frustrating and disappointing. In addition we experienced problems in the service of the wine package however this matter was satisfactorily resolved on the night by the proprietors but the two issues together did not make for a relaxing stay.

While the breakfasts were excellent we felt that the food at dinner, although good, was not exceptional as some reviews of the restaurant suggest. Unfortunately we were of the opinion that the food was over rated and we have had better meals elsewhere in the Lake District.

Our mountain view room was beautifully decorated and well appointed but fairly compact with the smallest bathroom we have seen! Clearly the building is a cottage which has been carefully and tastefully restored so space is limited but the size of the room may be a consideration for some when choosing which type of room to stay in.

My wife and I recently spent 3 days in this very special hotel. It's location is magical and the views breathtaking. The Hotel itself is highly recommended and their Garden Room in particular is a real gem.
The food is first class, both for breakfast and dinner. Even if you can't get to stay there we strongly recommend that you go for dinner. You will really enjoy it.
Service was very good, particularly from the Lady of the House who really knows how the make her customers feel at home and valued.
We will undoubtedly return.
