“Nice and relaxing, a real treat!”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to an overnight stay and meal out, we choose this place as it had many good reviews, I am pleased we did we had a lovely time and the meal was very good, we enjoyed it very much. The wine was also good with some reasonably priced ones on the menu. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere and was full, the service was excellent, the staff are so polite. Our room was a standard double (cottage) which was quite small but everything was there we needed and the bathroom and shower were good, the room was very clean and well maintained. There was also some nice touches in the room, good toiletries, homemade biscuits and a dab radio along with all the usual. One of the best things was breakfast in the morning in the conservatory which was very tasty. We would certainly return in the future.

Well - where to begin?

We were looking for a quiet and picturesque place to stay for a few nights....I'd always wanted to visited the Lake District so when we found 'The Cottage In The Woods' it looked like the perfect spot; how right we were!!!

We booked for 2 nights staying in 'Treetops'; the attic room. Both of us loved the cosy and secluded feel of this room.

On arrival we were greeted with a warm and friendly smile. The restaurant was busy at the end if its lunch service but we were still met with a lovely welcome - nothing was too much trouble.

The area around 'The Cottage' is amazing - the autumnal colours in Whinlatter Forest were beautiful; everywhere you look there is another superb view.

On our first evening we ate in the amazing restaurant. Pre-dinner drinks were followed by an immaculate meal....the service was first class, food delicious and the ambience just made our first evening here a memorable one.

Breakfast the following morning was just as good and (even though it rained all day) it set us up for a great day's walking in the hills. When we returned from our hike (soaking wet!!!) Kath kindly offered to dry ALL our gear - whilst we warmed up in the lounge and were treated to coffee and cake by our host.

I could say so much more about 'The Cottage' - but I'd just suggest you go and visit yourselves....we will certainly be going back.

My final words must go to Kath....so friendly, so kind and nothing is too much trouble. Including posting back my two rucksacks that were left by accident in the drying room....service like this doesn't happen very often these days and deserves a big "Thank you!"

First class service and outstanding food. I'm not sure that there's much else to say. If you're seeking a magical location, genuine and attentive service, and beautifully prepared and locally sourced food then this is the place.

We visited this hotel for a second time knowing it was already good. This time was even better. The new upgrades are very tasteful and create a lovely welcoming and informal atmosphere. The food is excellent and I can highly recommend it to any foodies among you.
Beds were extra comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful. All in all a very enjoyable weekend

My wife and I stayed here for three (3) nights. It is a very unique location set in the middle of a national forest. The room and bath were excellent, the breakfasts were super, as was the fine dining experience at their own restaurant. Easy access to so many places in the area - breathtaking scenery, places to walk/hike, excellent pubs and other restaurants. One can walk from the hotel to the national park headquarters and then onto many various trails from easy to strenuous with incredible views.

The food and service is absolute Top Class at Cottage in the Wood I would highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates 1st class service and food, this is definitely the best restaurant around !

Kath and her staff are so professional, friendly and welcoming. Nothing is a problem, they are so courteous and want to make your visit special. It is so consistent it really is a pleasure to go, they are all smiles and really know how to look after their guests.

I love going to Cottage in the Wood, the menu constantly changes and the food is always cooked to perfection. The dishes are so unusual, all local produce and the flavors just ooze with every mouthful.

I am already looking forward to my next visit.......

We have traveled all over the world and Kath takes the cake for being the most professional and the kindest of all inn keepers. In addition, the food is glorious (both breakfast and dinner), the setting is lovely and quiet, nestled into the Whinlatter Forest, and it's far away from the bustle of the villages and the traffic in the Lake District. Even with the sloping floor and a bit of a musty smell in the bathroom, in our forest-view, corner room (the best room in the inn), I don't hesitate to give the entire experience the highest marks.

Room Tip: Forest view, corner. Fabulous.
