“Lovely food and warm welcome made for a very special stay”
Reviewed June 13, 2012

Had a lovely stay recently...food was divine and locally sourced. Spoilt for choice with local beer and a cracking wine list. The staff were warm and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. An ideal base for exploring the Lake District...so much to see and do. Dogs are welcomed so it meant our old chap could come along and enjoy some lovely long walks...will definately be back!

Room Tip: Excellent views from the front of the hotel

Immediately felt welcomed by Liz and Andy. Had a lovely light and airy room at the front which had beautiful views. Large comfortable bed. Excellent food. Liz makes the best scrambled eggs I've ever tasted, and Andy arranged a picnic lunch for us one day which was perfect - home made bread, fruitcake, fruit and a mars bar for energy on the walk! It was also lovely to sit outside in the garden and enjoy a drink after a long day walking the fells.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have lovely views.

My third visit and my wife's first. As usual everything was perfect, room, food, real ale!, breakfast.

Andy and Liz and their staff go out of their way to ensure that you have a good stay.

We were only going to stay one night on our way to Fort William but my wife had a fall (NOT in the hotel!) so we stayed another night. As an example of typical Middle Ruddings concern for their guests Liz rang me at midnight in Carlisle A&E to see if we would like someone to stay up to help my wife up the stairs!

Just plain brilliant!

Room Tip: Having tried 3 - they're all good!

This hotel was picked for its central location to an area we required to walk the local fells. How pleasantly surprised to find this establishment run by the nicest couple, may we also compliment there attention to detail, all the staff were helpful and courteous. The rooms esquistly clean. The restrarant was very good we had no need to eat anywhere else.

Stayed for 2 nights with our springer spaniel Oscar. Great to find such a good dog-friendly place as well as such a well stocked bar of real ales for my hubby. Dogs allowed in the bar, next door dining area & bedroom, even had doggy towels in boot room. All staff from reception to the youngest of waiters/resses were very professional, friendly & helpful. Room was very clean & big, perhaps a little old fashioned but we liked that. Food & breakfast & ales were fantastic, & very good value too! Definately be back, thanks again.

This was our third visit to Middle Ruddings and this time we were bringing an 8 month baby as well as the older boys. Once again the room was clean and comfortable, the kids loved the toys and games in the residents lounge and the ever changing selection of Cumbrian ales were well kept.

Each night the children ate at 6 and then we were able to put them to bed and come down for our meal with a baby monitor. (The monitor only worked in the bar, not the smarter conservatory which was just out of range). The chef was fantastic, happy to tailor the food for the kids' palates so there wasn't a chicken nugget in sight. They ate slow cooked lamb, duck, chicken etc and even tried some adventurous deserts, the staff always being willing to split an adult desert into two or three for us. Our meals were also fantastic, showcasing local produce and clever twists on English classics. Don't expect much spice, chilli, garlic - its British food. Daily changing menus ensured we were very happy to eat there every night of our stay.

Breakfast was also great, from the kids' boiled eggs and soldiers to our full English breakfasts They use local produce from small scale farms and the results beat anything I've had in a London hotel where its so often buffet style and tepid.

Another reviewer mentioned Fawlty Towers decor. The place is sort of shabby but its very clean and characterful with open fires and dogs welcome. The kids toys have seen a lot of use and the gents downstairs is more pub than hotel but the staff are all friendly and helpful and one feels very welcome even with three kids under 8 !

We will be back.

The staff were very welcoming, and helpful to me as a lone traveller. Room clean and good facilities, although not modern decor, which would probably seem out of place anyway.

Food great, and staff again very helpful when I needed to check out before breakfast I was given a great take out that me going on my mountain walk!
