EVERYTHING WAS FANTASTIC!!! Food was delicious; highlights were the mutton consome, the turbot, and the cheese on toast! And also the wine flight was excellent. Great service and excellent value.

I appreciated the fact that they had a vegetarian set menu as well as a set menu including meat. I had the gnocchi on the vegetarian menu and my daughter and her partner had fish on the regular menu. Both were very good and their bread was especially good. My daughter had a mackeral starter that was also excellent. I had a salad that was good, although a bit small. For dessert, I had lemon curd tart, my daughter had a fruit crumble and her partner had cheese, The crumble was the best of the three. Overall, we thought the food was quite good, although a bit pricey. The atmoshere was very nice, a quiet dining room, which is unusual. We would have preferred a table with a view, but the dining room was full when we arrived. reservations are a must.

We came to meet with our daughter who was on a fleeting visit to the Lakes. We stayed and she joined us for a meal. We found the room impressively large, comfortable, well appointed, spotlessly clean and it had a proper Radio, with an earphone socket for the insomniac. Never had that before, most welcome. The windows were easy to open and being on two walls we could enjoy fresh air without letting in rain. It was wonderfully quiet.

The welcome was wonderful, and we were given a proper cup of tea and some delicious cake as if we were personal friends visiting. Kath took phone calls from our daughter and ensured we met up in a comfortable sitting room and supplied with appropriate drinks.

We ate from the 3 course menu and everything we chose was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented.
We were spoiled for choice. The homemade bread selection was inspired, and there was plenty of it, none of that one small roll nonsense, removed before the cheese.
They were happy to give us tap water in addition to the wine and the service was excellent without being obsequious. We appreciated the calm atmosphere. The tables were far enough apart not to be overheard.

We were not disappointed at Breakfast either which was excellent both in quantity and quality. The view of the bird feeder was entertaining.

Only 3 tiny irritations (which apply by the way to all the places we have stayed recently). Baths with shower over should have a handle to help old people get out. The non slip mat really helped and was impeccably clean but I needed something to grab!.
Many of us have electric tooth brushes these days, and need a support for the charger within range of the shaver socket.
I don't know how to solve this but had the duvet been less thick and luxurious, one of us getting too hot in the small hours would have been less of a bother!

The free WiFi was a bonus as there was no mobile phone coverage. We were not charged for a land line call.

Tried the "Taste of Cumbria" menu - 8 beautifully prepared taster dishes - all excellent and extremely difficult to choose one above the rest (the braised beef possibly...or the turbot?). Elegantly presented and simply explained.

The hosts and serving staff were very friendly but, like a few of the better eating places in the area, the guests seemed cautiously formal which made for more of a slightly hushed atmosphere than I'd have liked - but this in no way spoiled our evening (The Oddfellows Arms in Keswick Main St more than made up for this aspect later on!).

Not inexpensive (£140 with a large g&t and 2 glasses of wine) but worth the experience.

We'd specifically ask for a table in the conservatory next time - the views would be spectacular (low cloud permitting!).
