Recent visit to the village with friends saw us take lunch by the roaring fire in the Royal Oak. A lovely traditional establishment, stone floor, comfortable with a good menu. We plumped for the local Cumbrian sausage with onions and also the rump steak sandwiches, we were excellent, served promptly, although it was fairly quiet being early for any lunchtime rush.
We would certainly visit again if we are in the area.

Our first visit to Braithwaite saw us having dinner at the Royal oak. We were staying in a cottage virtually next door so it was super convenient for a pint and something to eat.
I feel a little harsh giving an average rating as everything about the pub was nice. There was nothing that stood out to tip it into a very good rating however. I would go back but will also be trying other pubs locally.

During a weekend stay in Braithwaite my wife and I visited the Royal Oak for a drink with a view to eating there the following night. It was fairly busy for late in the season but we found bar stools and ordered drinks. The welcome was indifferent with not a smile in sight, nor any thought for small talk. The beer was up to Jennings high standard (Sneck lifter and Cocker hoop), pity about the service. As a consequence of our experience we chose not to eat here, good decision I think, there are lots of alternative restaurants and pubs.

I have just stayed in Braithwaite for the weekend and used The Royal Oak each night. Great food and great Jennings ales, in particular Sneck Lifter at 5%.
The food was great, the atmosphere was great and staff were great. That would probably explain why the place was rammed full of people.
Definately go there again
