Best Western Strand Hotel
Ranked #7 of 16 Hotels in Visby
Reviewed July 12, 2013

We stayed in Best Western Strand Visby for 3 nights in late June as a couple with a child. It’s at a nice location about 1 Km from the ferry terminal inside the old wall. Despite the warning sign outside the wall entrance, you can drive in if you are booked in the hotel. The town square and the church are within walking distance as also most attractions and the waterside.
The parking left a lot to be desired. There is one parking right in front of the hotel which was always full. There are 2 additional parking lots behind the hotel which are accessible via very narrow streets (most streets in fact are cobbled and narrow in the old town). The first day we found one parking in the rear lot. On the second day, all the parking was taken; luckily I had a small car and could manage to squeeze in the empty space between the gate and the first slot (though it was not a regular slot). Again, the third night I managed to find the last slot. I really wonder what the others did and noted some customers looking desperately for a place to park. Point to note is that you must get conversant with the hotel location in the map since the GPS may not be useful especially when some streets have been made one-way and some are closed suddenly to traffic.
Lady at the reception was rather cool and stern looking. Not very welcoming.
We had booked a room for a family i.e. 2+2 children. It was spacious but had not got any good views- just the rear of the hotel. There wasn’t any air-conditioning in the room but luckily it was very cool during our stay. Apparently you could get table fans on request. There was no coffee-maker (available on request) or iron for pressing clothes. Tea-coffee is always available at the reception along with some cookies. The room was carpeted (bit old), had a minibar (only with water), a writing desk with chair, a 2 +1 seater sofa set, an additional oval table, hair dryer and room telephone. When I went to shower in the bath, there was no soap in the dispenser! So I had to dry myself and come out to call the house service for the same. They then provided toiletries. Otherwise it seems it’s just the soap in the dispenser.
The breakfast was large and quite delicious- but the usual one you would expect in such hotels.
The room price was quite expensive, as is everything else in Visby compared to rest of Sweden.

This is a totally charming hotel. The location, for me could not be better, near the waterfront park and only a few blocks from both the harbor and town square. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were very clean and breakfast was very good. I have done a great deal of traveling and have never stayed in any hotel that was better.

We stayed here for a night with friends. It's a great location in the middle of the beautiful town of Visby. We had booked a family room for four people. On arrival, we were shown to one the smallest, pokiest rooms I have ever seen which contained 3 single ( US twin size) beds. It was completely absurd. After some quite spirited, and persistent arguing, they eventually moved us to a suite which was very pretty, and contained a sleeping place for each member of the party!

our friends were also in a family room, which whilst not roomy, contained a bed for everyone and a bit of space to walk around- the fact that they tried to get away with giving us that ridiculous room was very annoying. I do however acknowledge that they put the matter right in the end,( after much persuasion !) and apologized.
Just as a side note, the bathroom ( even in the suite) was old fashioned- hand soap in a horrible plastic dispenser on the wall and no other toiletries. But the rest of that room was very nice.
Would probably try somewhere else if we went again.

I have stayed at this hotel on several occasions during Visby's Medieval Week - either with my boyfriend or the rest of my family. The hotel has the best location in Visby in my opinion being inside the historical part of town (within the medieval walls) and yet close to the beach offering the most beautiful seafront esplanade. The interior design is very pleasant, service is good, and the breakfast is one of the best you can find in Sweden. I especially liked free tea and cookies at the lobby which we could help ourselves with during the night.

However, there are few issues with this hotel which became obvious only during our last visit. First of all, there's no A/C in the rooms. If the weather is bad, you won't notice, but believe it or not, it can get over +30C in summer. Opening a window would help, but that time we got a room facing inner parking lot where some bikers who were staying at the hotel used to hang out - smoking, drinking and talking loudly. After some time I dared calling the reception, but they more or less ignored my request and did nothing about the situation.

To make the matter even worse, that room was just above the swimming pool area which had doors open at all times and you could hear screaming children plunging into the water non-stop, sounds emphazied by high ceilings and tiled walls. Luckily, the pool was closing down at 10pm. One could argue that you shouldn't stay in your room during days, but if you are going out at night, it is good to have some rest during the day.

If this was a hostel-type accomodation, the above would be acceptable, but not for the rate of 200+ EUR per night. I would probably not stay there again, as they cannot guarantee a specific room during high season.

I was completely taken by the surreal medieval charm of this town, and this hotel was very much part of it. We were out of season and on business , so I did not pay directly, but this was one of the most charming and memorable places I have visited. The room was comfortable and unique, and the food fantastic - very varied and healthy. I would love to return on holiday but would be difficult to travel to from where I live in Scotland.

This hotel is really charming and used to be a brewery, so the layout is very odd, but unique. No two rooms are the same, but the plus is that most of the rooms are huge! My parent-in-laws stayed in a regular room and we were in a suite, but both were very roomy! However, since it is quite hilly in Visby, the rooms and even the floors of the building have varying levels, so there are small steps here and there, very difficult if you have a baby stroller or are handicapped. If this is your case, I suggest getting a room by an elevator as ours was on the 2nd floor with no elevator. The breakfast, which was included in our rate, was really good and had both the cold Scandinavian dishes and hot British dishes like eggs and sausage along with freshly baked bread, which is a real treat. Also, if you're a healthy eater, they also had the standard yogurts, fruits and muesli too. Internet was free, but slow. We didn't get to use the amenities, like pool or sauna. There didn't seem to be a restaurant at the hotel, but in which case, we ate in town. It takes about 5-7 minutes to walk to the town center, where there are many more restaurants to choose from. The hotel is on the bottom of the hill close to the entrance of the wall, so to get to the main square, you have to prepare to walk uphill and on cobblestone streets. Bring good shoes! If you are physically challenged, I would seriously find a location up the hill closer to the central square as you have to see Visby by foot. It is also about a 15 minute walk to the ferries, give or take 5 minutes depending on how fast you walk. It's a great location and quiet area, and everything is close by in this enchanting medieval town..

This is a small and simple hotel in Visby, Gotland in the middle of town.
The room was nice but small and the price was high.
Ok breakfast but I have had better. Not too much choice. Nice staff! Very helpful!
It is close to the sea but you cant swim there.
