“Hotel is way too big and noisy for a sleepy small town (police were called twice)”
Reviewed January 12, 2010

We had a good trip inspite of this hotel, not because of it. The hotel is absolutely massive and completely out of scale for Ettalong - it ruins the landscape from the beach. Not that the beach is much to look at.

While the view from the balcony looking from inside the room was nice there are just too many balconies overlooking each other so there is no privacy. We watched over our balcony twice while the police were called to unruly guests in our 4 night stay.

The pool was so packed most of the time there weren't any spare seats/lounges.

We stayed in the mantra ettalong beach in the first week of January in a 2 bedroom deluxe. We do alot of travelling and this would of had to be the worst place we have stayed at. To begin with when we booked we were told a 2 bedroom deluxe is big enough of 5 people- when we walked into our room, we thought we had been given the wrong room as it was extremely tiny. There was a very small kitchenette, with a very old stove top making it difficult to cook anything. The lounge room was the biggest downfall. Only 3 people would fit comfortably on the lounge- as well as the very small round dining table, resulting in 2 of us having to either sit outside or eating on our laps on the lounge, there was only 1 tv and it was tiny and about 15yrs old. The 2 bedrooms and bathrooms were good and clean, and the view was nice, but after paying $450 a night it was completely not worth that at all- it is more an hotel room than a holiday apartment.

It was also VERY noisy, the first night the people above us were partying till 4am we called reception multiple times but it didn’t seem like they cared and did nothing about it. We also asked for a shower cap and they told us that we had to pay for it. Most of the staff members were rude and unhelpful including the staff members at the day spa- who did not even seem to know their own products.

Ettalong itself is like a ghost town, there are a few restaurants down the road, but after 7:30pm you won’t see 1 person along the main street. Mantra Ettalong is EXTREMELY overpriced for what you get in the room, location and service.

We stayed for 5 nights at Mantra Ettalong late December 09.

The 'one bedroom apartment' we stayed at was the size of a studio with partition around the bed and sliding doors on both side with minimum moving space. There was no space in the 'bedroom' for a cot. There were patches of stains on the sofa. Some of the pillows were very lumpy. The kitchen was well equiped for our requirements (we did not cook).

The staff were polite and with standard corporate manner, somehow seems odd at a coastal leisure hotel.

The hotel is across the road from a river beach with very shallow water, perfect for toodlers. The walk along the beach in the evening was lovely.

There is no restaurant within the hotel. The hotel is located above a RSL club which appeared to be the source of the night club music that kept us awake till past mid-night. They served fast and honest family food at the RSL. Staff were friendly and efficient.

During our stay the hotel guestes consisted of many families that appeared to know each other, consequently there were parties beyond mid-night. We were also kept awake by the room above us, which moved furniture and walked around from 11:30pm to 1am.

The 'apartment' was not serviced unless the service is being requested at additional cost. Fresh towels were supposed to be offerred daily but we only received fresh towels 2 days out of a 5 day stay.

Overall it is not a bad hotel. I suppose it is all about expectations. Unfortunetely, at $360 a night, It did not meet our expectations.

I stayed here for Christmas night, one night only with my daughter. We booked the hinterland spa studio room. The rates were quite high but I booked approx 6 weeks in advance and managed to escape the 3 night minimum they were asking for later in December. I am very relieved I was not here for 3 nights!

The pool area was lovely but we didnt get to experience it because it rained constantly. I really liked the room, decor and the spa bath in the bathroom but was quite disappointed in the room location setup. Our room was on the 2nd floor, despite me requesting a high floor. Our door from the hotel corridor opened up to have 2 doors, one for our room and one for the larger apartment next door. This is where the problems started. We had constant noise from our neighbours who had a large family.

This is not the place to come if you just book a studio room for 2 people as this is the set up for ALL studio rooms I was told, when contacting reception to see if they could move us to a quieter location. Because the room next door to us sleeps 4-6 people, we had that amount of people's noise, including screeching kids. They were up late into the evening and I was then woken again to hear them (and smell) cooking their breakfast the next day. Each time they went out of their door, it was banged loudly. No consideration whatsoever for who might be next door to them.

I booked this room as a quiet ,relaxing escape, it was far from it. When I asked both on check in and during the morning of the day we were leaving if we could have later check out, the best they would offer was 11am. I then got a call at 10.20am asking when I was leaving, after I had just had a conversation with reception 30 mins earlier again asking if they could move check out until 11.30 or 12noon (NO, was the answer)! Very inflexible, as there is NO way the cleaning staff can clean all rooms as soon as they are vacated. As we left, we noticed 2 cleaning carts way down the other end of our hallway, no where near our room. Inflexibility doesnt do much for customer loyalty but it seems Mantra really dont care if you come back again or not. There is no Mantra customer loyatly program so that says alot. I am a platinum member of a large hotel chain and they actually care what their customers think and try to improve your stay. No so here!

My wife and I stayed here with our 1 year old son and 2 year old daughter. We were on the second floor with views over the pool to the beach. The room was clean and had all apartment like amenities (kitchen and laundry with pots pans utensils, washing machine dryer etc).
The pool is fantastic especially the shallow end for very young toddlers. There is a spa at one end of the pool as well.
Staff were very curtious and went out of there way to help with luggage. No problem with getting extra towels!
It is an apartment type complex so you can cook meals if you like. There is a club located on the ground floor. The club has a bistro, an a la carte restaurant and an outdoor BBQ/cafe type of setup. Just a five minute walk we found a great Tapas restaurant. There are also many cafes and other restaurants near by as well as supermarket, bottle shop and all the usual shops you find in a town.
The Resort is right across the road from a beautiful little beach which was just great for the kids and not a bad spot to drop a line if your into fishing. You can also hire a boat or kayak.
I would definately recommend this resort for a great family getaway.

We stayed at the Mantra Ettalong beach in Jul 2009. We have 4 adults sharing one 2 bedroom apt and 2 adults and a 2 years old staying in a 1 bedroom apt. The 1 bed apt is very spacious and has all the items you required ie kitchen utensils, washing machine, dryer, spa bath, king bed etc. There is lovely view from balcony. The 2 bedroom apt living area is a bit small. Bascially the space in the 1 bedroom and the 2 bedroom are very similar. The 2 bedroom apt also have everthing we needed.

I contacted the resort before we got there to see if they can put us in the higher floors and away from the pool to minimise noise. They were very nice to put us on level 6 which is the highest floor before you get to the more expensive suites and they also give make sure the 2 bedroom an 1 bedroom apts are next to each other. This make is easier for my 2 years old to visit grandparents in the next room.

The resort has a beautiful pool (although we didn't use it as it was too cold). The resort is within walking distance to the beach and shopping area/ restaurants.

Overall we had a lovely stay

The hotel is quite spacious and modern and the room we stayed in was a decent size with a kitchen and laundry. The shower / spa bath was great and the room quite neat, however it is hard to get to sleep on a friday or saturday night as we were on floor one and got all the noise from the Restaurant / RSL underneath us.
