“Nice getaway hotel, not too far from Sydney”
Reviewed February 25, 2012

I stayed here for two nights as part of a corporate function.

My room was on the second floor and had a view out over the pool. It had a small kitchenette facility and a washer dryer. The bedroom was set off from the living area by sliding double doors.

The hotel public spaces and my room all seemed very new and finished to a good standard, with modern fixtures, fittings and appliances.

My only criticism of the hotel—and it's a minor one—is that it lacks public space and doesn't have restaurant facilities. It is hooked onto The Ettalong Club, which is kind of an RSL but a very nice one, with decent quality food. They did a very nice breakfast for our corporate gathering, but I'm not sure if this would be available to people who aren't part of a group. Regardless, the hotel is right in the Ettalong CBD and there is at least one café directly across the street.

Also, it's worth noting that the beach directly outside the hotel isn't really much of a beach, but only 10 minutes' walk down the road and you're at a very nice beach with decent surf.

With a decent pool, bedrooms separated from living space, and kitchen/laundry facilities in the room, this is a great hotel for a family getaway... I am actually keen to take the family along in a few weeks' time (spouse plus two children under 5). It also worked well for our corporate meeting.

A final and very minor footnote... I left my razor at home, so I enquired about getting one at the reception. In my experience—which is mainly limited to Europe and Asia—any hotel that purports to have three stars or more keeps some disposable razors, toothbrushes, etc., at the front desk. However, the (very friendly) reception staff advised me that the local IGA Supermarket would open at 8 am and I could get one there. It was no big deal, but this—along with the lack of dedicated public spaces—illustrates that this is less of a hotel and more of a holiday apartment complex (though a nice one!).

Room Tip: I reckon the higher you go, the better. My room was on the 2nd floor and overlooked the pool... not...

We come up to the Mantra @ Ettalong often for a weekend getaway from Sydney- at least 3 times a year. Less than 90min drive from Sydney and this sleepy little town makes for the perfect escape from the rat race. Feel relaxed from the moment you arrive. We always book a 2 bedroom terrace suite (these have larger balconies that guarantee you're facing the ocean). The apartments are light and tidy. Basically furnished and have all the ammenties to cook (if you're so inclined) in a very small kitchenette area. Great place for kids with the terrific huge pool and spa. Across the road from a calm still beach where you can also do a spot of fishing.

Ashame they don't do room service but you can always order a delivery from one of the local restaurants or go visit them. Also the resort is built on top of the Memorial Club (like an RSL) which has a great bistro/restaurant and you can sit on the outside deck with views across to the beach.

This time we came up with another family and their kids. Bought prawns from the local co-op (2min walk) and sat up on the balcony with some bubbly and beers. Bliss!

There's alot to do around the area or as little as you like. It's being so close to Sydney yet feeling like you're a million miles away that really appeals to us making it a great place for a weekend getaway.

Room Tip: We book through the holidays lettings at Ettalong rather than the Mantra direct as the prices are ge...

Dear MatandMel

Thank you for reviewing your stay despite booking through holiday letting and not Mantra.

As you are a holiday letting booking Mantra is only required to issue you with keys and has no other responsibility in regard to services required i.e ice deliver to your room.

It is pleasing to read that you enjoyed your stay and hopefully you will take advantages of our special deals which are on the Mantra web site and WOTIF and stay with Mantra on your next visit.

We look forward to welcoming you back during 2012

A lovely, modern resort hotel built right on top of the Soldiers Memorial Club which has a great restaurant and millions of poker machines, if that's your thing. My wife put in a dollar, won ten and we left. We only had breakfast there but it was mouthwatering. Service was great. We arrived late in the evening and there is no room service. We ordered in Pizza which took an hour but was worth the wait. The spa in the bathroom is just what any Doctor with brains would order and the kitchenette was modern, functional with everything you need if you want to cook yourself. We got a cheap room at the back but could still view the ocean (photos attached) I was expecting the worst in a kind of back water place like Ettalong. This place blew me away. The poor kids on the front desk are rather understaffed late at night, and have to deal with a fair bit of traffic, but they do fine.

Room Tip: We chose a cheap room and it was great. If you are staying longer and want a better view, spend mor...

My husband and I travel from Victoria for a sporting event each year + usually stay in Sydney. So glad we decided to head up the Central Coast to stay at the Mantra for a change. We had a deluxe studio with sea views overlooking the fabulous pool. Even though the weather was on & off we could sit on the under covered big balcony and watch the boats etc. Room was clean and big. Really appreciated the washing machine and dryer. Free parking . Friendy staff. We will be back next year.

Room Tip: Would ask for a sea view room

My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our three night stay in a two bedroom ocean view room. It was lovely to sit on the balcony and watch the ferry and other boats go by.

We loved the old black and white photos of the area along the corridors. I spent some childhood holidays in this region way back in the 1950s.

My only complaints would be that the beds were rather hard, though this didn’t affect our sleeping. Still our much cheaper hotel in Sydney had mattresses with the soft topping on them. And I found the lights in the main room hard to read by as I like something brighter shining on what I’m reading. But very minor quibbles.

A few of the restaurants close on Monday and Tuesday. One of the reviewers in January said that the area has no good food or coffee. Were they in the same town? There is Thai, Chinese takeaway, Indian, Italian, a couple of restaurants near the cinema, the pub and the club downstairs.

We ate at the Thai restaurant (big servings so glad we shared a main), an Italian restaurant in the block before the cinema (fantastic prawns on the pizza and the pasta) and at the pub near the IGA for steak. Also breakfast one morning at the Scarlett Table cafe (excellent waffles and scrambled eggs).

Coming to Ettalong by ferry from Palm Beach really made us feel like we were going to an (almost) exotic holiday destination. And there is a bus stop out front going to Woy Woy for the trains to Central (or Newcastle). An easy place to reach by public transport.

Next time will have to be there on a Saturday to check out the markets.

Room Tip: Ocean view room up high.

From arrival to departure the Mantra at Ettalong was a joy to behold. Courteous, friendly front desk staff; clean, bright & well appointed apartment, FREE undercover parking, and proximity to facilities - the Ettalong Beach Club is right next door - makes this a standout in the area, if not the region. Rooms overlooking the water are in high demand, but even those facing the hinterland are perfectly fine. And, unlike others, they'll accept 1-night weekend stays. Priceless!
