“Excellent Value & Experience”
Review of Alex Surf School

Alex Surf School
Reviewed July 14, 2013

Twinkiepatissier's review pretty much summed up everything I'd planned to say about Alex Surf School. It really is a customised and very personal experience. This is a surf school with optional accommodation, rather than a surf camp where you could just be one of many pupils.

Alex has a very unique approach, offering dedicated surf tuition to small groups. Consequently, you get a better quality of instruction and overall experience. He will also take you to the best spot for the day’s conditions. With Alex, you also have the added assurance of being coached by an excellent surfer, who makes it look very easy. He helped me iron out 17 years worth of bad habits and improved my surfing considerably. The video session was an added bonus and gave me plenty to go away and think about, not to mention work upon!

On the social side, Alex is extremely caring and keen to ensure that everyone is included and has a good time. He took a group of us to experience some excellent local cuisine in Peniche, which was one of the best nights of the week. We also had a few hours windsurfing at Obidos, followed by my final and by a long way, my best surf session of the week.

I can heartily recommend Alex Surf School and wish you every success with your surfing.

If you are reading this, you are lucky to find out what Alex and his staffs have been doing in Peniche-Baleal area. During my two week stay, I asked various clients how they ended up at Alex Surf School. Just as I came to learn of its existence through my surfer friend who visited Baleal years ago, people seemed to end up at Alex's gig mostly through word-of-mouth. Alex offers a personalized approach with each of his clients -- paying attention to every little bad habit in my surfing skill (or lack thereof) and giving me feedback constantly -- even when a group consisting of wide range of experience. He often drove us around to check the conditions together, and when it was not ideal at any spot, then we were asked to opt for canceling our surf lesson (no charge) and he called it a rest day. He understood my comfort level (heavy and fast OH surf, não obrigado) and never compromised our safety. I was able to paddle for some waves that I normally wouldn't go for, but that's only because I was in the water with Alex and was able to trust his commands. If you are a newbie who wants to try surfing, Alex and all staffs are personable to hang out with in and out of water and will be truly happy to see you feel the stoke. If you are an experienced surfer who wants to get an in-depth knowledge of local breaks, paddle out with Alex and watch how gracefully, playfully, and powerfully he dances on the water.

Out of the water, I was well taken care of as well. I stayed at "Alex Surf Hostel" which is a new accommodation that Alex and Vanessa (a cute pharmacist) put together recently. In my opinion, this "hostel" is more like a 2-bedroom & 1.5-bathroom "vacation house" that is vibrantly decorated and furnished for comfort. The kitchen is big and fully equipped (there is even a BBQ brick grill outside!) so that my vacation housemates and I were able to throw a nice BBQ gathering at the house and host 10 people + 1 black labrador (Becky). Cooking at the house was economical, but I wanted to try Portuguese cuisine. As a solo traveler, it's somewhat awkward to dine alone at a restaurant in Europe, so I appreciated dinner outings that Alex organized for fellow surfers.

Aside from surfing, what made Alex's gig a gem and an unexpected delightful surprise was that, for me, it was a culturally stimulating experience. Alex is a magnet of attracting nice, honest, adventurous, and open-minded people; a true international crowd of staffs, friends, and clients. My housemates were well-travelled surfers in their 30s and 40s from other European countries. Also, people that I met through Alex's surf lesson were working professionals in their 30s and were very pleasant and respectful to paddle out with. I wish that I could have extended my vacation for another week. Next time, I will make sure to take a 3-week vacation…or more.

We chanced across Alex the first time we came to Peniche and have looked him up ever since. Well-respected, as local as they come and more intent on making sure you have a good time than boring commercial realities, his expertise, local knowledge and range of kit mean that whether you're an absolute beginner or just can't be faffed to bring your favourite board out on the plane he's the man to go to. Cheers for all the good times Alex.

Are you surfing beginner that don't like big school regime?
Do you need knowledgable but flexible instructor that will show you a little bit more than stand up technique?
Are you advanced but need advise or someone local to show you the spots and disclose some tips?
Alex may be the one you're looking for.
I was in Baleal there times and always contact Alex first. His customised approach and easygoing approach works for me.
Above the regular stuff one could expect from surfing lessons he showed us some local places (bars, restaurants, Surf shops), all spots in the area and Surf board factory backstage to understand how boards are produced and works! I haven't expected all those things and highly appreciate that extra effort. I guess, he contributed significantly to the fact that we come back to Baleal so often.

Good waves
