I've been to this place three of four times now and it's really outstanding.
It was the first surf camp to open in this area and therefore it has the best location. It has an amazing surf station right on the beach overlooking the main break, with showers, boards, beers etc. The houses you sleep in are just 2 or 3 mins walk away.
Because everyone talks about the area under the heading of "Peniche", they make the mistake of thinking that is where the surf is. In fact, all but one of the main surf breaks are in or arround Baleal where this surf camp is. It is a small town 10 mins by car from Peniche. It is where everyone ends up surfing because it has most of the breaks. The only break which is a bit further away - Supertubos - does not work very often. When it does, it's just 10 mins by car to get there anyway.
The Baleal camp is run by two local brothers and lots of helpers from round the world - it's a v friendly, family feel and everyone is welcomed no matter what standard of surfer they are. During the day everything is v cool and relaxed with the focus on surfing and beach games etc. At night the surf station on the beach transforms into a real night spot with live music, DJs etc - so you can party hard too if you like. They also shoot photos and video of everyone surfing and have a nice show at the end of the week.
They have a couple of nice clean surf houses where you can stay with others and be social but they can also fix for you to stay in a place of your own if you want a bit of quite. The first time I went I took my wife and four kids and they fixed us up with a great little villa just set back from the beach. Just tell them what you want in advance and they seem happy to fix it.
Normally I take my own board and wetsuit but they have 60 or 70 boards at the surf station that you can use - NSP, SurfTech, Bic, softtops etc. All are quite good but if you want something special they have a deal with the local shaper -Fatum - which does proper glass boards in all shapes. Again, just ask.
A nice friendly place offering great value. But, most importasnt of all, it is in the best possible location - you don't want to be travelling to the surf in a bus every morning!
