Ian makes your time in the Puketi truely special .His enthusiasm and knowledge of his locality make it a fascinating evening .As darkness falls you will see bats , eels, cray fish and a lot of the insects that live in the forest so this is not a trip for the squeamish .

Awesome!!! We started our walk just before the sun went down, so as you walked into the forest it was still daylight....when we reached the point of turning around to walk back out it was dark....and wow...you saw things you didn't even notice in the daylight!! At night your senses are so tuned and the forest came alive with the sound a Morepork (I swear he was following us as we walked), tiny insects going about their nightly rituals, beautiful spider webs (not scary at all!!), the sound of waterfalls in the background, and bubbling streams where we saw the fish and crayfish hiding from the eels. The rest of what we experienced you will just have to go and do yourself...you will love it. Thanks Ian...was truly fantastic & unique :)

Ian and Barbara, you are wonderful hosts! We arrived at 5ish, and (after a wee delay so that I could tape the suddenly loose sole of my boot back on!) promptly left for the forest as dusk settled around us. The sights and sounds of Puketi are amazing; the Moreporks calling and answering, the Kiwis as the darkness falls, and the distant rush of the waterfalls.
Huge Kauri trees surrounded us, and the nocturnal forest dwellers made themselves known: huge Wetas, sheet-weaving spiders, freshwater crayfish in the streams. And the best part; we had the place to ourselves; Ian knows everything about this forest; he played here as a child, and has the most amazing enthusiasm and rapport with it.
Because we live a mere 15 minutes away, we'd always taken the forest for granted; we knew that the trust that cares for the forest, has been very effective, and has successfully re-introduced native species, but we'd never had a good walk there. Now we have, we'll be back through the seasons to see how it changes!
We'd recommend this tour, or the daytime one, to any and all visitors to magical Northland!

We live locally and I can't believe that we've never done this before. We went on the night walk and it was just brilliant. Ian is the best guide, he knows the forest inside out having lived here his whole life. He knows where all the wee insects live, and the fish hide! We heard moreporks and Kiwis calling. Saw cave and tree wetas, fresh water crayfish, the biggest kauri and it was just wonderful. We want to go back again at all different times of the year because I don't think you'll ever see everything there is to see. Thank you Ian, loved it!

We were on a cruise ship stopping at the Bay of Islands New Zealand.
And that day was going to be my 70th birthday.
Since we love hiking, nature and exploring new and different things
we researched what to do in this port stop.
Contacted Adventure Puketi and had an amazing guided forest walk
in a grove of giant NZ Kauri trees.
Barbara responded immediately to my email with detailed instructions
about the pickup at the wharf (does not matter which dock the cruise ship arrives at..they will find you). Ian was standing at the tender dock with a white board with Adventure Puketi on it.
The shuttle is a red Honda CRV with their logo on. The total cost for the half day guided hike and shuttle was NZ $120.p.p. It was certainly worth it. We got to walk without concern about getting lost and at our own pace. And I could stop at any time and take photos.(Some of which I attached to this review) We had a running commentary on the forest plants especially the giant Kauri trees from our excellent and knowledgeable guide Helen.
In summary we had a great hike in a beautiful place with a company that handled everything and made us feel like we were spending the day in the forest with old friends.
