“Reasonable Accommodation for the price in Canberra”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 24, 2013

We were visiting family for a few days and the location suited us but remember it is on the far south side of the city. The hotel presents quite well at entry but corridors have no air-con which was not fun in the summer heat. First night was a problem as our air-con unit was dripping water all night. My wife got very little sleep. At about 1am we opened the slide windows - boy the runners need some work - noisy- felt sorry for the neighbouring rooms. We put towels on the floor to absorb water then we were woken in the early hours by the rubbish truck calling to the club next door ( our room was on the side that backed on to the back area of the adjacent Sports Club), then at about 7.30am we had club staff talking in their back car park.

We advised management of our problem the next day and we were moved to another room - it had a spa but the bed was smaller and seemed well used and there was a spa bath with an overhead shower- would be difficult for older people to step up and in the bath. We were also on the other side of the building away from the club.
The problem with the rooms is that the wall air-con units are on the same wall as the bedheads so the first night, the air was blowing right on my wife and then the other nights it was adjacent to and above my head which meant cold air falling on me. This air- con issue was a nuisance.

I used the 'gym' one day but the equipment is old and pretty ordinary- cross trainer did not work and seemed well -worn. The gym is a pokey little room next to the pool and I question why bother having it. Pool is indoor so the chlorine smell is strong. There is a sauna and spa but sauna could not be used on the Saturday when I went to use it because the tap for water in there had a hose connected for water to go into the pool.

Also on the Saturday, there was an afternoon wedding and the pre-meal drinks involved everyone sitting in the foyer drinking and talking - too bad there was no separate area for things such as that.

Tuggeranong Hyperdome is 5 mins walk away so handy for shopping, cheap meals and breakfast also. We had dinner at the adjacent sports club most nights. Meals were quite ok and not as abd as some other reviews seem to make out - it's club food but acceptable.

Overall ,the Country Comfort looks a bit tired in areas. Rooms could do with a spruce up, air-con needs to looked at ( incl corridors), get rid of the gym. Parking is ok, all open air, but was pretty full when we were there on some nights.

The price is good for Canberra- would I stay there again- maybe, but there are some new alternatives in the area albeit, apartment style hotels and they don't have a pool but there is a large indoor aquatic centre nearby. I'd consider my options and costs in any decision.

I did appreciate management taking action on our room problem after the first night.

Room Tip: It costs a little more to stay in rooms away from the club side ( south side)so bear that in mind

We had a little difficulty finding the motel as there are two roads with the same name but not connected in the middle. (I think it has been a crescent in the past.) Otherwise, we experienced no other problems. It was very comfortable, clean, and well-presented. It was very close to a large shopping centre. It would have been nice if the internet was free.

Have stayed here for the second time in the last year and seen some big improvements! Our first stay wasnt the best experience, but was apparently during a time of change in management and staffing. It is the perfect location for our visits to Canberra so went back again to be pleasantly surprised with the changes that have been made. The facilities are clean and well maintained, staff were really helpful and we had a comfortable stay. The dinner options are still limited, but the food has improved and there are a lot of options on the breakfast menu which made up for it. I understand they are still working on the whole restaurant menu. There is a club next door aswell for another dinner option. The wifi is a bit tricky, but at least the first 15mb are free.

Will be staying again.

Room Tip: We had a quite stay on the south side.

We recently stayed during December 2012 and had a pleasant family experience. The hotel itself is not the newest looking, but is clean, well maintained and has all the essentials for a comfortable stay - comfy, clean beds, clean bathrooms, modern tv's and free wifi. We understand that there are rennovations planned so the look of the place should improve soon. The staff were really friendly and helpful - especially with our toddler - they had even set up a portacot for us before we got there.

It is conveniently located within walking distance from a shopping centre, playgrounds, the lake and our favourite - a swimming spot in the river - this and the airconditioning saved us from the heat! It didnt take us long to get into Canberra itself.

The dinner options were a bit limited, but the food was good - there is a club next door as an alternative dinner which was a convenient outing for us. Apparently they have had some changes in management and the hotel menu is being updated.

The biggest hit for our toddler though was the kangaroos which were there every day right next to the car park.

Room Tip: We had a corner suite which had a separate bedroom from a lounge -this let us relax without waking o...

My wife and I stayed here while we were holidaying in Canberra and visiting friends. It has everything you need (comfortable bed, good breakfast, free wi-fi), is a short walk to a huge shopping centre, and is easy on the budget. Ask for a room overlooking the bush where kangaroos are just hanging around - you don't get usually get that in a city.

We booked a spa room here (so we didn't need to drive home from a nearby function). We were assured we had booked a non-smoking room.

On opening the door we were almost overpowered by the absolute stench of cigarette smoke throughout the room. Complained to the desk, who said they would get the manager to check and that he would probably bring us a can of air freshener ("in about 20 minutes").

Nearly two hours later, the manager finally arrived but was then clearly astonished by the overpowering smell of the room. He offered a room change, which we gladly did. Unfortunately, moving rooms then ate up any relaxed afternoon time that we might have spent in the spa.

Did I mention that the spa is literally right next to the bed? Weird arrangement.

This place is quite dated, needs some renovations and seems overpriced for what it now is. Would not stay here again.

My husband and I recently stayed at this hotel for the weekend and really enjoyed our experience. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and provided great service. Though the room decor was a bit outdated, it was very clean, and we were advised that they're in the process of renovating and updating the hotel. We stayed in the honeymoon suite, which had a wonderful large spa bath next to a picture window overlooking a field filled with kangaroos - it was a great way to start the day! We ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant, and enjoyed both meals. The menu had a large variety of items and the food was tasty and well presented, though the steak was a bit overdone. We used the hotel as a base while we explored the Canberra area - it was convenient for driving to the city to visit Parliament House, and also to visit a few of the local wineries. We will definitely stay there again when we're in the Canberra area.
