Stayed here for 9 days at the end of August and could not have asked for more friendly or considerate staff or a more personal service in a hotel that could easily have been impersonal. The rooms are spacious and most have fantastic views. There is a good variety of food and never seemed over crowded which was impressive as the hotel was full. Made the most of the watersports and the staff there were really helpful. Missing it already!

We had 6 nights at Rasa Ria in mid August 2008. This is a great place to just slow down and relax.

This resort is run really well. There is plenty of space - although the hotel was full at the time we always found a sunlounge in the shade, never waited for a meal. Free internet in room. Laundry costs were reasonable. Staff were plentiful responsive and helpful - you felt they wanted you to have good time. Room was clean and well maintained and loved the balcony.

Food was good quality loved Tepi Laut on the beach and surprisingly the char grill steaks were fantastic. We ate too much. Like the rest of Malaysia wine is expensive and drinks seem more expensive than the food.

Loved the orang utan - so easy to see them just 10 minutes walk from the hotel. Went horseriding on the beach. The hotel is 30-40 minutes from KK but hey you come here to relax. There were lots of families and kids. It seemed a great place as there is a kids clubs and saw lots of kids fed early and parents enjoying dinner alone later. I would have liked another pool with no kids.

The beach and jungle location was fantastic. I really enjoyed the stay and would go again.

Well what an amazing holiday. We have just come back from our honeymoon. We spent two nights in Kula Lumpur ( stopped at the Istana hotel which was nice but a little on the shabby side. As for KL istelf we were a bit disapointed as there weren't any obvious sights to see apart from the big towers, but we hadnt really read up on KL so its probably our fault!).
We then moved on the the Shang ri la for 12nights. Firstly the hotel itself is beautiful, really up to date and modern but with a touch of local culture. Our room was huge and we had a king size bed which was really comfortable. Even though our room was at the back of the hotel, it looked out onto the rainforest and it was a lovely view. As we first walked into the hotel we were greeted by the staff and given a refreshing drink whilst the band played some local music. Every member of staff at the hotel were so lovely and always ready to help, the service was outstanding.
The facilities were great, the pool was huge so even when it was busy it didnt feel overcrowded. But all the loungers were positioned 30seconds from the beach which was gorgeous. Clean pure white sand and the sea was crystal clear and so warm. Next to the pool there were also table tennis tables and a bowls area if you felt like getting abit sporty during the day!
The food was delicious and there was plenty of variety, we really liked the coffee terrace a la carte menu because there was so much choice. The buffets were about 120rinngit which is roughly 18pounds. The cocktails were amazing and cost about 38-40ringgit which is about £6. We went to coast twice, coast is the very posh resturant which is fabulous and looks out onto the beach. With the meal and drinks it came to about 600ringgit which is about 80pounds and that was for a three course meal, coffee and champagne! Alot of peploe have said its very expensive, which compared to resturants and bars outside the resort it was but so worth the extra saving up!
We went on several excursions some through the hotel and some through the travel agents located inside the hotel. Go on the afternoon cruise with the hotel, the snorkelling was amazing. If you can book the Menkabong water village tour with the travel agents it was an incredible experiance. We also went to see the orang u tans at the hotel. That was brilliant and we felt after seeing them there we didnt need to make the treck to sepilok.
Overall it was the most amazing experiance, borneo itself is an incredible place and the people were lovely. The hotel is pure luxury and we cant recommend it enough!

Wow! We booked 4 nights in a deluxe garden view room at the Rasa Ria at the end of a 4 month trip through Europe. What an absolute treat this resort is.
After arriving in our rather shabby looking clothes and our backpacks, we were officially greeted with the gong and cold welcome drink. We were then upgraded to a deluxe sea view room which was a lovely surprise. The room was beautifully furnished and we had a fabulous view of the ocean and gardens.
Staff were extremely helpful and friendly at all times. The food offered in the restaurants was of the highest quality. The buffet breakfasts were very filling.
The visit to the Nature Reserve to see the orangutans was well worth the trip - we had heard it was better than the reserve at Sandakan.
We would recommend this hotel for anyone after a relaxing and romantic time. We would certainly stay at this hotel in the future and recommend it to anyone traveling to Sabah.

Great hotel, fantastic setting, great food, overpiced drinks, we also stayed at the sister hotel which is 15 mins form KK and a 5 star, the beer in the hotel shop was 1/3 of the price compared to the Rasa Ria.
