One of the main reasons for coming to Sabah was to see orang-utans. Rasa Ria did not disappoint. It is a small but very effectively run facility, with four baby orang-utan orphans currently in the Rasa Ria program - which leads into the better known program for more adult Orang-utans in Sepilok. We visited from KK for the afternoon feeding session at 2 pm. We enjoyed the informative introductory video which sets the scene effectively, and found the visit to the feeding area and the experience of seeing two of these beautiful creatures very special indeed. We watched them for over an hour - eating, playing and interacting with e ach other. Wonderful. Thanks also to the ranger who was very helpful, answered all our questions and clearly passionate about his important young charges. Well done Shangri-La for supportingsuch an important program.

As we arrived at the lobby area, we were welcomed by the sound of gong, traditional music and off course a lovely staff who attended us the check-in process in a short time. As she knows that we were from peninsular Malaysia, we communicate in Bahasa Malaysia. I know the sabahan people use "aku " "engkau" in the language. But I feel uneasy and uncomfortable with those words. I hope in future the staff will use Tuan/ Puan as a formality language communicates between a staff and the guests. We stayed in room number 125 only for one night. Our kids really enjoyed the pool with the new slide, got a chance to join the kids club and played few games at the games center. Unfortunately, we were running out of time to try the complimentary free rental bicycle activity. We were very pleased with all staffs kindness and courtesy. Absolutely we will come back and hope to spend more nights to enjoy activities here.

This tour was the main reason for our visit to KK and it did not disappoint.

We had booked early with a tour operator, but three days before our planned visit we were informed that bookings were full. We decided to try and organise our own visit once we got to KK and, with the assistance of the very helpful reception staff at the Novotel, we contacted the Shangri La directly and were lucky to be able to book ourselves into the afternoon tour the following day.

To get there from 1Borneo we took a 30 minute (approx.) taxi ride for a set price of 70 MYR (it would be more if travelling from the city of KK). The tour was 65 MYR per person as we were not staying at the Shangri La resort. The staff at the resort happily called us a taxi for the return trip. So, in the end we found it very easy and cheaper (even with tips) to organise the visit ourselves, especially given the help of our hotel staff.

Our group was quite large but once we arrived at the viewing area and the two orang utans appeared, everyone was quiet and just in awe of the situation we were so lucky to find ourselves in. We stayed and watched the orang utans eat and then basically play around the tree tops for about 50 mins. The rangers were friendly, informative and clearly dedicated to their work. It was an amazing experience we’ll not forget. Highly recommended!

We were staying around an hour away & took an afternoon trip to the nature reserve. We had an amazing time watching the two male 3 year olds from the feeding platform. The rangers show real care & affection for the animals. I would visit everyday if I could!
