Having driven past on a number of occasions we thought we would call in and see what it was like. The restaurant was empty when we arrived and we were told that they don't start serving meals until 6.00 so we would have a 30-minute wait as we arrived a little before 5.30. The restaurant looked very nice however we were put off by the strong smells emanating from the toilets which also wafted into the bar area. We ordered two drinks, pricy for a glass of wine and a shandy at a fraction under £10, and sat in their other room (probably the old public bar). This consisted of tired worn out furniture that looked dirty and uncared for and needed replacing, not one of the wall lampshades matched and the whole room was very tatty, it was not very comfortable.
We left without eating so I cannot say what the food was like but the menu looked comprehensive with some nice dishes but we were put off by the shabby appearance and the smell from toilets.
On checking the Bedfordshire Scores on the door I was glad we had not stayed as it only scored a 2 star rating and was rated poor on cleanliness and hygiene.
Disappointing as it has some good reviews on Trip Advisor and looks nice from the outside

Dear Wilnik

We believe it is important that any potential customers that offer their opinions on this website are reviewed in order to take into consideration any comments that are pertinent to our progression. However, it is important that all comments are holistic and factual.

The pub is furnished in keeping with what we feel would make our pub welcoming and create a friendly ambience; the eclectic mix of furniture, and in particular, our lampshades are intentionally set up this way. We are sorry that you feel differently.

Our pub is cleaned daily by a professional company. The toilets and general upkeep of these is maintained by a reputable cleaning company. If you felt the 'smell' of these toilets was not satisfactory, we would gladly welcome a suggestion for a more suitable fragrance - we are happy to forward this recommendation to the cleaning company.

We believe our prices are competitive. However the quality of our products dictate these prices to a large extent. We are exceptionally proud of our wine list which has been compiled by a prominent Master of Wine.

Thank you for pointing out our score on the door. As we are sure you would have noted, this is dated March of 2013. We will contact the local council to arrange an updated score(visit) as this does not reflect our current standards. However, given your knowledge, please feel free to do this on our behalf. You are welcome to view our kitchen to see our high cleanliness standards.

Please feel free to contact us via this website. Alternatively you can use the information from our own website, which also details our kitchen opening times.

Attractive country setting. Initial impression upon entry is that of a comfy country pub. The dining room is of a different character, ornate with a French feel. Well presented food, beautifully cooked. Service efficient, friendly but not obtrusive. Would visit again.

Great pub, this. Very friendly staff, comfortable seating, and a nice ambience. It was packed on Saturday evening in the restaurant, so booking is clearly necessary, and the meals did look great, although we didn't eat. I recommend this pub.

“Great food and Atmosphere”
Reviewed July 8, 2014 via mobile

Visited on Monday evening and the restaurant was busy but not packed. Great food all freshly cooked. Service was good and we did not have to wait long either to be served or for the food. Steaks highly recommended. Well worth a visit and we will definitely be back, and soon.

“Travel Zoo”
Reviewed July 8, 2014 via mobile

Using my Travel Zoo voucher my friends and I visited the restaurant on a Monday evening. The atmosphere was very homely and friendly. The service was good and the food to the expected standard, well prepared, cooked and served. As each meal is prepared from scratch the time taken was well worth the wait, which was quite acceptable. A most enjoyable evening. We shall return.
