Description: Now that Indian cuisine in this country has grown up, high quality Indian restaurants have spread to the provinces. One such is Spice Cottage in East Peckham - a far cry from post-pub lager and chicken tikka marsala. The restrained interior dcor and airy conservatory or delightful garden if the weather permits, provide a relaxed setting in which to sample some of Chef Junu's specialties. Of course, all the old favourites such as Tandoori chicken are here, but you could also be a bit more adventurous with dishes like Manchurian Chicken, Korai Prawns or Lamb Tikka Rezala. The friendly staff are happy to offer advice for those who don't like their food too highly spiced and there is plenty of choice for vegetarians. The 'eat as much as you like' Sunday Buffet is particularly good value at 7.50 for adults or 4.95 for children.

Booked the spice cottage for myself, partner and his parents on a Saturday evening. After the spice lounge in Hadlow had sadly closed down, we are on the search for a good Indian restaurant so thought we would give it a try. When we arrived there was confusion over our booking, as they looked us in a somewhat confused manner, the man then disappeared and we spoke to another man that I presumed was the manager, he told us to sit down and wait amongst the people that were waiting for takeaways! So not a good start. We were then seated at the back of the restaurant which was full so thought it must be popular if its busy. We ordered drinks and they arrived, were plonked on the table very rudely by a very miserable looking waiter- it was fairly comical but on the other side not how you would like to be treated at the beginning of the meal- as we felt like we were an 'inconvenience' to them. We decided to order poppadums whilst we looked over the menu. Well we we waited and waited and read the menu over and over again- we also discovered that they do a section of Jamie Oliver Speciiality Wines which we thought was slightly odd but anyhow. Still no poppadums after 40 minutes we asked waiters several times and they just looked confused. The pickles eventually arrived but still no sit of those poppadums! We then asked a third time and they arrived- well they say good things come to those that wait, definitely not in this case- they were undercooked oily, the didn't snap you had to sort of peel them back- not very appealing or appetising! We sent them back and waited for another lot after telling the waiter that they were not cooked, the second plate arrived, well no improvement still undercooked, oily and honestly rather limp looking. The waiter then asked us if they were ok and to check them! We were mortified that he asked us to check them if they were cooked! So we decided to call it a night and leave, as we were not having a very good experience, so we briefly spoke to the manager on the way out speaking of what had happened, he didn't say much, not apologetic just looked rather embarrassed, well so he should. We will not be visiting this restaurant again ( if you can call it that) but if your looking for a Restaurant where drinks are plonked on the table, rude miserable looking waiters, and undercooked oily poppadums then this is the place for you! The search for a new Indian Restaurant continues........

With the Spice Lounge in Hadlow closing down a few months ago we have been looking for another good Indian restaurant. Knowing that the Spice Cottage has a similar pedigree to the Spice Lounge and having tried it once a year or so ago we thought that we would give it a try. We had booked but when we arrived there was some confusion over that so things did not start well. We were seated reasonably quickly and drinks and poppadoms were ordered. Drinks arrived, plonked rather unceremoniously on the table by a rather surly waiter and we waited for our poppadoms, and waited and waited. After 30 minutes and a couple of reminders the assorted pickles arrived but no poppadoms, five minutes later the first set arrived dripping in oil and rubbery, obviously undercooked and were sent back. Five minutes later the next batch arrived, just the same as the first, we were even asked by the waiter to check to see if they were OK, what is that all about where is the quality control in the kitchen? It was at this point that we left, 40 minutes and no edible food. What is disappointment, the search goes on for a good Indian restaurant, we certainly will not be visiting the Spice Cottage again!!

If ever a restaurant went downhill quickly it is this one.
We used to use it a couple of times a week and did not want to give up on it but having now had about 5 awful meals in a row, no more !
They continuously get orders wrong, pass off breast of lamb instead of leg and the food is tasteless.
Really very bad.

I had a fantastic meal at Spice Cottage. The new management has made a huge difference both to the quality of the food and the service. The staff were friendly and prompt in looking after our needs. I had lamb Jalfrezi and it was the best I have had. My two friends who were with me were just as impressed with their dishes.
The atmosphere was relaxed and the decor tasteful. I have read the last two reviews and it sounds as if I went to a different restaurant! The manager came and talked to us and was very interested in our feedback as he said he is keen to continue with the excellent standard. We felt heard and cared for and I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Apart from good food and service, the location is lovely and quiet and there is plenty of space in the carpark.

fab location, fab looking, great parking, could be a diamond in the rough if only the food was any good. Such a shame, bright red food doesnt appeal to me, the meals often look and taste the same, service is appalling, they keep your change as a tip unless you ask for it back!!!!!!!!!! Really gone downhill, when you have other gems like tumeric gold just down the road why would you eat here. Such a shame.
