The Portobello Motel is "out in the sticks" in the tiny village of Portobello on the Otago Peninsula - which is part of its charm. Apart from a shop and a few restaurants there is not much there, which means that it's nice an quiet. The motel units are extremely well appointed, very pretty and well looked after by the owners. We had a very spacious 2-bedroom-unit at a good price and were so enthusiastic about the place that we stayed three nights instead of the one we had originally planned. The units were well serviced as well and the hosts friendly and helpful. What more do you want?

We stayed here for 3 nights during our stay on The Otago Peninsular. The motel was well positioned for all local attractions and as we stayed in a Studio Unit we had a lovely view of the harbour and the small garden below our patio was alive with birdsong. The town itself had a number of useful facilities like the Penguin Cafe and Cafe 1908 which were fine for a quick lunch without being particularly noteworthy. The Peninsular itself was unbelievably quiet given its proximity to Dunedin. The accommodation itself could not be faulted and the staff were extremely helpful in every regard. Laundry facilities were very good. It was our first introduction to cooking in an electric frying pan, something that we found in many such units in New Zealand. I must say we found it a very convenient way to cook a variety of different meals but won't be buying one now we've arrived back home :-)

We even stayed one day longer then planned! Very nice location, breathtaking view on the water, very quiet. Did a Off Road tour with the host Sam.

We stayed here again twice this year. This time we stayed in a different room and had our son stay in another room. The motel rooms are always spotless and cellphone service is excellent. The motel wireless (Zenbu) works well for internet connections. Both stays this year were as enjoyable as the previous times. We spend more time at this motel than any other location on the South Island. It truly feels like home in NZ to us. We love the people of Portobello at the various nearby cafe's and shops. The motel setting is perfect for it's privacy and beautiful views of the harbor. We cannot say enough about the helpful staff who we have gotten to know over the years. There is so much to see on the Otago Peninsula and nearby Dunedin that in three years of extended visits, we keep on finding new things to see. We hope to go back many more times.

This place was nice and clean, the decor was new and the cabin well equipped. Staff were a little cold and I didn't think it fair to charge for a 6 month old baby, especially as we didn't require a cot or anything as we had our own? Further more there was a bit of a fuss made that we wanted a 2 sleeper (as it had a nice view) and including the baby there were now 3 of us which meant that there would be a fire risk and we would have to sleep there at our own risk!? What??? Anyway it is a nice location although not on the waterfront but close enough and from our cabin you could see the beach and sunset. I would reccomend it.

Thank you for your comments. The staff member was only carrying out our policy of not over loading our units. We do have family units to cater for children but the Studio Units with the lovely Otago Harbour views are for adults only. They are listed in our fire policy as accommodation for two people. We also have a policy of charging for all children from 0 to 17 years. I am glad that you enjoyed the location and facilities and thank you for staying with us.
