We recently returned to this property March 8-11, 2013. We went with a group of friends and spouses. I have previously reviewed this property at length and wanted to update a couple of things that have changed. We usually pick this property because it is so convenient for the husbands to kite. However this particular weekend the wind was marginal at best and they boys did not get to do much kiting. But that is certainly not the hotels fault... march is not great for wind. Anyway, we booked a partial ocean view room which is the room as I mentioned in my last review that overlooks the parking lot with a real stretch to see the partial ocean view. However, I will note that the hotel decided to "upgrade" us and put us across the street. I expressed my desire to stay on this ocean side of the property but was told that no rooms were clean and the staff left for the day (It was 4pm). I was told that I could change rooms the following day but out stay was to short to make a move. I did even mentioned that we had stayed at this property four times before (my husband more with his extra kite trips) and that didnt seem to sway her to do anything differently. (It was a little bit bizzarre that the room was available but not able to be cleaned until the next day) Anyway, I reluctantly moved into the rooms across the street.
I should say that these rooms do have ample space including a microwave, fridge, sink, countertop, full living room and small balcony and almost double the space of what we had booked but I simply do not like going across the street to get to my hotel room. It ended up being really nice for the stay and I am glad that we got the extra space. The bedroom is in the back of the unit and is the only part that is air conditioned but it was pleasant even in the living room. The furniture again shows some wear and the ceiling fan and some electrical components were rusting but the living room is pretty much open to the outside and is to be expected. They looked like they were slipcovering some of the furniture to try to make it look new again.
The part of the property that was under construction (rooms that would face south down the beach) were still not completed. The island seems to have really suffered in the economic down turn and they may just be trying to stay afloat with what they have and not add more rooms. Who knows but is was disappointing that this had not been completed yet.
I should mention that the bar and wait staff was extremely friendly and helpful and a pleasure. The lounge chairs really do SUCK. They are very worn and uncomfortable and in desperate need of new ones. But we keep coming back because of the location to kite and small boutique feel. We went for long walks to the left all the way past surfers point to a nice long beach, ironically call LONG BEACH. Walked in bathing suits but absolutely need shoes since it was really rocky in spots. We did rent paddle boards right next door at the shop for $50.00 a day, $30.00 a half day or $150.00 US for the week but please now that you can barter with them. If you are looking for top notch large hotels by all means go to the west coast.
Taxis are available right out side the hotel on most nights and we never waited more than 5 minutes. While the area of the hotel may seem like its not safe, I assure you the locals are great and very helpful.
One last note: They now have a room in which kiteboarders can keep their equipment and not carry all of it up and down steps. This was a nice addition!
