La Quinta Sarapiqui Lodge
Ranked #2 of 3 La Virgen B&B and Inns
Reviewed March 8, 2013

This hotel would get 4 stars if it had some updating done to it. It's a bit run down, but clean and has alot to offer. Trails, a river, pool, butterfly garden, ponds, etc. The food was very good at the restaurant.

Don't let my three stars put you off this hotel. Maybe the bathroom doors don't close completely, or the door to the neat little patio doesn't latch 100%, or the finishing and fitting of components left a bit to be desired...the bottom line is that we really enjoyed this place. The open air concourse just off the lobby is basically a jungle, with all the flora and critters that go with it. All the rooms have a small patio and ours, facing the back of the property (jungle) was no exception. Greatly appreciated was the hammock, the two easy chairs and at night, a selection of animals. Our favorite was the armadillo that just wandered by while we were enjoying the quietude one late evening with the lights off. If you are an early riser, the trucks that go by starting at five in the morning won't bother you ( I suppose they are part of the pineapple plantation not far from the hotel)...then at six in the morn, the next batch of commuters go by, usually on small motorcycles...after that, things settle down. You should keep in mind this is the real Costa Rica, not the gated communities and all inclusive resorts of the west coast. As for the buffets, as another reviewer put it "was good (but not excellent)"..more than adequate. The surrounding area has a number of things to do, bird watching, bat tour, chocolate tours, and events on the Sarapiqui River. We ended up doing the white-water rafting with our guide JJ (Juan-Jose) and it was excellent. Highly recommended! So, in short, feel free to enjoy the laid back atmosphere of La Quinta.

Room Tip: Try to snare a room facing the back of the property...a bit more private.

Reception was friendly and efficient. Having visited this establishment some years ago, I was looking forward to seeing what changes had been made: fortunately very few. This is not a B&B hotel, rather a lodge for naturalists who can enjoy the bird-life and vegetation. The rooms are adequate although some rooms (and bathrooms) could usefully benefit from a lick of paint. Rooms are small, but have a good-sized terrace with rocking chairs and a hammock. Toiletries are minimal, beds are good but quality of sleep can be poor owing to heavy late night/early morning traffic at the adjacent pineapple plantation. Food is best described as basic and wholesome with some choice at all meals. Although there is a theoretical menu, dinner is usually served on a buffet basis to accommodate group tours. It is reasonably priced which is welcome as there is nowhere else to eat. Wines at about 20 USD are reasonable quality Chileans. WiFi is good in the lobby area (and free) and there is a small pool, a further one is under construction. Overall, I would return.

Room Tip: As far from the road as possible

This hotel is described as "a mid-range lodge" and coming as it did sandwiched between two exceptional hotels did these premises no favours.
The reception was small and poorly lit,two travellers sat, feet on table, had "Basil Faulty" appeared I would not have been surprised. We were taken along an open air passageway which served the single storey accommodation .
The rooms were quite small, however the shower was hot and the bathroom generally of good standard. The bed was comfortable and the storage available was much appreciated. The room was kept very clean.
The dining area is an extension of the reception however the indifferent welcome we received was vanquished by those working in the restaurant who were friendly and attentive. The food was very good particularly the breakfast which was of a high standard and huge portions if needed.
Visitors would do well to tour the gardens, they hide a variety of wildlife and some very beautiful plants, but do leave time to explore properly, there is much to catch the eye.
There is also a patio area(near the reception, you never seem to be far from the reception)which again is worth a visit.Fresh fruit is left for the wildlife and an abundance of colourful birds and small mammals make a bee line for these feeders.Once again time is the enemy so get there early as there is always much to see and hold your interest.
Reference books and the internet are readily available to ensure that visitors get the most from his/her stay and add to the experience.
Without doubt the poorest lodge on the tour, but in fairness probably the best in the area and it did give us all an added dimension to our tour.

Room Tip: There is a busy and dusty road running along one side of the lodge. It is in poor repair and lorries...

We really liked this hotel. The reception area and the restaurant is an open area without walls in the middle of a nice garden. The breakfast and dinner buffets are good (but not excellent) for Costa Rican standards. You can see a lot of birds in the garden and there are some short footpaths in the surrounding "jungle". The location of La Quinta is good for visiting La Selva Biological Station (recommended) or for rafting on the Sarapiqui river.

What we didn't like was the family room that were very basic with just four beds, no other furniture, white plain walls, and cold fluorescent light.

Except for the family room, we had a great time in Sarapiqui and we would be happy to return (then choosing some other rooms).

Room Tip: Avoid family rooms.

We saved the last few days of our trip in Costa Rica to spend time at one of our favourite lodges. Upon arrival we were given the friendliest of welcomes by the owner and shown to a delightful room. I believe all rooms have been upgraded since our previous visit and the one allocated was most comfortable and in an enchanting setting overlooking a garden and the river. The grounds are quite extensive and great for those who like to enjoy birds and indeed the many other small wildlife to be explored there. Great care is taken by the staff to keep the bird feeding station replenished and it is always rewarded with an exotic array of birds.

The swimming pool is of a good size and maintained in top condition. The restaurant served us a good selection of food and drinks with coffee available throughout the day. We found everything about the place to be both relaxing and charming and in particular the friendliness of the staff made for a memorable stay. Special thanks to Beatrix for the kindness displayed on all our visits to La Quinta.

Generally a nice place, if a little tired, with nice gardens and a splendid bird feeding station that attracted an excellent array of birds in the morning. Clean and tidy but the food was unexceptional and the noise of heavy lorries, presumably from the nearby pineapple fields, using their engine breaking early in the morning was sometimes very noticeable.
