A great trip after a 20 minute nature walk across a 264 metre canopy bridge to the tended area where chocolate making is explained and you taste every stage of the production.rather expensive at $27 per person and the promised unlimited chocolate was just a few spoons of the liquid - shame at that price. be warned they will not allow you in without covered up feet, even open topped shoes were banned unless you had socks on and you would have to wear their wellies (without socks, so not an option) or sign a waiver negating them of any blame if bitten. The nature trek was not arduous and the only think likely to attack your feet were the leaf ants which generally dont bother - a little over cautious I thought. The chocolate tour was great fun - watch out for the hot stone and some of us got blisters from the heat and were not warned. Also saw a great preying mantis which kindly remained for numerous photos - a bonus!

So sad, that you can not appreciate our tour. We had some snakes accidents in the past, so this is why we ask to wear shoes, if this make you umcomfortable our apologies, but we are trying to keep you safe. The reason why we are not giving that much chocolate, is because we do not have a real plantation, is just some cacao trees, and we depend on others to bring the chocolate. next time we will have more.

Tirimbina Lodge is the perfect combination of interesting tours and information about the jungle and a relaxing time. We stayed for just one night but had an amazing time. The chocolate tour with Michael and especially Dennis who was doing the demonstration was really cool.

The food could do with a little upgrade and the ladies with a smile, but otherwise a perfect stay! The hanging bridge over the river into the jungle is worth the trip itself!!

We stayed for 2 nights at the beginning of our trip and it was a very nice start. Walks are very easy. Wifi in the rooms. Although we stayed with 2 adolescents, we had bunk beds which were large. Very nice personal. Food not really great but that's not why you stay at Tirimbina ;-). We really liked it.

We stayed at la tirimbina for 2 nights and I have to say that this place is marvelous. I had visited before but never stayed. We hiked the trails several times and saw lots of cool birds, monkyes and a mama sloth with a baby.

The rooms are nice with AC and the food is excellent. I took a bat's tour and the guide Jun Carlos was so knowledgeable even though I'm also a tour guide I have so say that I learned a lot from him.
The staff is very friendly and the services are very good.

I will definitely go back soon.

I would recommend this place if you are in Sarapiqui

Wonderful facilities in a scientific biodiversity reserve with its own park and trails, competent and knowledgeable staff, easy to book tours and activities such as rafting, canopy etc. Various canopy bridges inside the park, one overlooking the Sarapiqui river, offer great possibilities to spot animals: sloths, porcupines, birds.... Trails well marked and good animal spotting as well.

Tirimbina is an ecolodge, meaning that it's primary purpose is to generate funds to operate the research center. It also provides a good ecological study tour experience. The rooms vary from dormitory style (two bunk beds to a room) to somewhat more deluxe accommodations.
Remember, you're in a jungle: the power can go out with some regularity. Be prepared with flashlights or headlamps.

The staff is great. The food is fine. Nothing here is fancy, so don't expect haute cuisine.

If you stay here, be sure to do the chocolate tour. I'm a critic of tours, so believe me, this is worth every penny. You will go from the whole cacao pod to chocolate syrup and hot chocolate in just 90 minutes, and you will learn a lot about the history of chocolate in the process.

Another must: a guided tour through the jungle. Yes, you can go safely on your own, but you will miss so much. Tirimbina is not a botanical garden, so there are few interpretive signs. So, unless you are highly familiar with the flora and fauna of the Costa Rican jungle, you had best have a guide with you.

I would pass on the bat tour. Although the idea of going out into the jungle in search of the murciélagos is appealing, that's not what we experienced on the bat tour. Instead, we walked for 5 minutes into the jungle, saw a bat net, and then returned to an upstairs meeting room, where the guide ran us through a powerpoint presentation on bats.

Interesting? Yes? An experience, well perhaps. At the end of the presentation, they brought in two bats that they had caught that evening, now wrapped in canvas bags. The guide rolled the bag back so that we could all see each bat, who were understandably quite ticked off. Then the guide took the bats outdoors on the veranda, and released them. One confused bat flew back into the meeting room and starting buzzing the room, unable to find its way back out. To the bat's credit, he never flew into anyone of the 20 people in the room, but that bat sure gave us a thrill.

After about 10 minutes of the guide trying to recapture the bat without success, we were escorted out of the room and the "tour" ended. We presumed the guide was going to take more extreme measures in getting that bat out of the conference room. We can only guess. Despite the excitement, I think you can get a better bat experience from watching some YouTube videos.

All is all, I would return to Tirimbina, where the sloths hang out in the trees right outside of your room, where you can see and learn about the biodiversity of the jungle, and where you can help support their research activities with your tourist dollars.

Absolutely beautiful and a great way to start or end a trip to Costa Rica. Gorgeous property, fantastic staff, and a wonderful gift shop, too. Like a lot of tourist locations in CR, whenever prices are quoted in US dollars, it's better to pay in US dollars.

Hiking alone is lovely and perfectly safe, but you see and learn a lot more on guided tours. Don't miss the chocolate tour. Would be a great place to bring (or send) kids. Don't miss the examples and excellent descriptions of various birds' nests.

Room Tip: Stayed in a Deluxe room with great beds, gorgeous furnishings, a beautiful patio, with A/C, private...
