Hacienda Pozo Azul

We didn't stay at the hotel, as we didn't know they had lodging, but will have to give it a try next time because we had a blast!

Our activities were set up by our hotel in San Jose including transportation and the trip also included breakfast and lunch at the Pozo Azul facilities.

We had a great time. My wife and I chose rapelling in the morning then white water rafting in the afternoon. My wife is not quite as adventurous as I am although she grew up a tomboy and getting her to rappel down a 90 foot jungle wall was almost too much. But, the guides (Esteban and the others) were excellent! She gingerly got down the first time and I could tell she was nervous, but she did a bit better the next time and on the 3rd try, it hit her that this was fun! There's so much safety involved that there's nothing to worry about with all the redundant systems. You could let go and you're not going to fall! The guys both above and below the ropes have you at all times and you really don't need to do much more than let yourself down which requires a minimum of strength. Once she realized that, she ran right up and did it a 4th time and laughed all the way! I think the most arduous part was running and climbing back up the footpath from the river back to the top to do it again!

After a great lunch, we got to change clothes (they have lockers and showers for you) and went white water rafting. Class 2 and 3 rapids in a big inflatable with 4-6 others and the guides and it was one of the highlights of our 2 weeks in Costa Rica that already had a ton of adventures. James was our guide and he was super. Get ready to get soaked and laugh your head off. The water isn't cold and it's like a 13 mile roller coast ride as you go through the jungle...at times calm and serene then you hit the white water and real fun begins! Not much strength or coordination required. We're pretty outdoorsy types, but it wasn't strenuous nor did it feel dangerous at any times plus there's tons of safey features and a kayak support that follows along. We stopped mid-way on the trip for fresh pineapple and a jump off the little cliffs to go swimming too. At the end, we were all yelling "Let's go again! Take us back up to the start!"

We'll be back!

It was a real experience to sleep in the jungle in a tent.
They call it tentsuites. The tents are build on a big wooden surface.
You have a big terrace with seats. You have your own bathroom.
And in a tent you are one with the nature. You hear clearly the sound
of the jungle.

WE drove here from Peace Lodge to spend the day horseback riding and white water rafting. I would highly recommend these! Horses were well kept and listened nicely to commands, not the typical trail horses I have found in the states! The ride was diverse as to scenery and I enjoyed it very much. Those that wished to were allowed to gallop across the field at the end which was nice. Be sure to wear clothes you don't mind getting muddy! Luis & Victor were great!
The whitewater rafting trip was fun and had decent rapids. A stop for fresh pineaplle snack and a jump off the cliff into the river was a nice break.
I would have given it 5 stars but didn't bcause the lunch was just OK although the view of the river on the deck was lovely.

We didn't actually stay in the accommodation, but used the centre for it's activities. We did the canopy tour zipping through the rain forest, the guides were great, very safe and also knowledgeable about the wildlife. We saw howler monkeys on the tour.

Next we did the white water rafting, there hadn't been a lot of rain and the river was quite low, the grading was supposed to be a III, but with this amount of water I would say it was closer to a II. The trip took around 1.5 hours, but can be quite a lot faster when the river is higher.

We also stayed for lunch, compared to meals we had included in our other activities the food was very good, but I wouldn't make it the main reason for coming here.

Would definitely recommend this centre for the activities.

The tented suites at Pozo Azul are SOOOO cozy and being inside the rainforest of Sarapiqui area is just splendid! Friends and I went there mostly for the adventure activities (canopy zip lining, rapelling, river rafting and horseback riding) but wish we would have scheduled an extra day just to soak up the surrounds. Falling asleep to the sounds of rainforest insects is very cool, and although they are abundant the tents close well and keep out mosquitoes while allowing you to keep your views open to the green forest canopy surrounding you. What a delight! I loved waking up in the morning on the terrace and doing yoga or watching the morpho blue butterflies float through. It's a magical environment and the tents are designed to blend in well with the surrounds while you feel absolutely comfortable- the design is very similar to East African safari tents and we loved them!
As for the activities, they are very well organized, professional and safety-oriented. Our guides were all fun, friendly and in tune with keeping us safe. The canopy zip lining can be kind of cheesy in other places, but they've got it right here: the 1000 ft (324m) long final speedy zip is a true rush as you cross the Sarapiqui River Canyon- hard to top that. Also, I'm an experienced horse rider and this is probably the best quality horse tour I've ever done abroad. The horses are impressively well trained and the terrain is beautiful- up steep segments, through rivers and able to gallop through fields! Wow, I wish I would have spent more time on their horses. Overall it's a wonderful place and not too touristy of a region in Costa Rica and I would go back with my husband and daughter for sure!

Room Tip: The higher the number of cabin, the further you are from camp which we liked for ambiance (but if yo...

We came here with no knowledge of what we were getting into; we got into Costa Rica off a ship in Puntarenas and just asked around for something to do for a few days. Got the recommendation to come here. Rented a car and drove out; got there in the pitch dark of night and were the only guests there that first night. It was actually a bit scary that first night because we could hear the forest creatures but couldn't see a thing and were extremely surprised that we had made reservations in a tent cabin! But it turned out really great. The tent itself is on a raised floor and zips up all around so that we had no problems with insects but could feel part of the nature of the rain forest. The staff were superior! We woke to bright sun, chirping birds and slightly annoying cicadas but it was all worth given all we got to see; we had a custom breakfast in the morning, great coffee. Just an all around wonderful time. We paid something around $150 each for two nights' accomodations with 2 adventures, 2 dinners, 2 lunches and 2 breakfasts included for each of us; all the meals were filling and fabulous! The sauces on the meats at dinner were exquisite--had to go to the main lodge for lunch and dinner and the adventures but we walked the trails during the day where we had the opportunity to take lots of pictures of butterflies, birds, flowers and insects. The adventures were fine--the river rafting was dependent on the time of year and water levels and is not something the staff can control and we were there right at the end of the dry season and start of the rainy season so the water levels were relatively low. The zip-lining was great--would have been better had we not had the "luck" of being there along with a rather large group so the wait between lines was quite long. But the runs themselves were nice--fast but not too fast so that we could see all around. Nothing like zipping through rain forest :) Everything was safety conscious and they provided transportation for us back to the tent suites' area.

We had a great time at Pozo Azul.. We did the canopy/white water rafting combo. All the guides were very friendly and we felt safe the entire time. The lunch that came with the combo was very good.
