“Book your activities outside the hotel and avoid the short guy at the reception desk.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2010

The short guy at the reception desk was not helpful and the only thing he would say to us when we asked him about something is that it is full; this included all activities we inquired about and the hotel in general, which the only other guests we saw while there were some construction workers. The manager was much more helpful and is the only reason were able to book any activities while visiting. We were told the Night Walk was full, but when we were supposed to meet before departing, there was nobody there. This experience will ensure we will never visit Sarapiqui if we return to Costa Rica, we feel it was a waste of time.

The hotel does have a Jungle feel as you walk to the room with the exotic hard wood floors, but never leave the light in the room on, otherwise it will be an invasion of bugs. The pool needs to be continuously cleaned for bugs.

I stayed at Hotel el Bambu for a night and thought it was rather quaint. I would stay there again.

The room was basic, but had a phone, television, and hot water. The street was a little bit noisy, but nothing ear plugs couldn't fix.

The hotel is centrally located in town. It was across from a park right in the town square; however, it was also right next to the local bus station.

The food in the restaurant was not great and the breakfast was rather meager, especially for vegetarians. However, I was told that Hotel el Bambu was the best restaurant in town.

The staff was very nice and helpful. They were very patient with my broken Spanish. If you don't know Spanish, I recommend bringing a phrase book, which I found essential.

My friends and I stayed here in 2 rooms and enjoyed the rooms. The AC was a split type, so it was very quiet and at full blast, it was extremely cool, perfect for the hot and humid weather in the area. The owner of the place speaks English very well, even though he was about the only one who spoke English well enough to converse. He made us feel at home. The lobby was huge and the decor was very tropical. It was comfortable just sitting in a rattan chair in the lobby.

Also, I really liked how the room had a private terrace area - the view's not great, but it POURED the 2nd day we were there and watching the storm from the covered terrace was lovely.

The not-so-great parts:
- The only computer is somewhat slow (spotty wireless internet connection), not available 24 hours a day, and it's enclosed in a clear plastic area which makes it slightly uncomfortable and hot, as well as perfect feeding ground for mosquitos - and you're the feed.
- The bathroom's only window is connected to the hallway (high enough so no one would be able to see you). Because of the way the hotel is open to the outdoors, the bathroom becomes susceptible to flying buggies. It freaked me out a bit, but it might not bother some people. The AC hardly reaches there, and I personally closed the bathroom door whenever possible because I didn't want the flyers to get into the bedroom area

  • Liked — The chilly yet quiet AC complete with convenient remote control and digital temperature indicator
  • Disliked — The bathroom window and how you're pretty much forced to keep it open for air, and lets bugs in.

We stayed at Hotel El Bamboo in January 07. The rooms are well equipped but are kind of dull. If you are looking for a hotel with charm it is definitely not the place to stay. If you are in the Sarapiqui area don’t miss Heliconia Island, the small botanical garden with lots of Heliconias.

The hotel is really cute on the outside. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They didn't speak much English, but between their limited English and our limited Spanish, we managed. That part of the stay was fun actually. The problems began with the rooms. There is no carpet and the wooden floors creak very loudly. The beds are bad. You can actually feel the springs individually. The lamp that is mentioned on their website that is in the rooms is a very small desk lamp that 2 queen sized beds are supposed to share; however, the air conditioner worked well when there was electricity to run it! There is an open window in the bathroom that you have to find something to stand on to close it and even then you have to be tall enough to reach it. If you don't close it, bugs come in. We closed the bathroom door at night and the bathroom was full of bugs in the morning. The lights went out for hours both nights we were there. We were first told that it only happens occasionally, but the next night a different manager that did speak English a little more told us it happens every night. If they know this, they should have supplied flashlights. One night we had to walk back to our room in complete darkness (with 3 kids) and decided to leave because we couldn't see a thing. The next night, we were escorted to our rooms with a flashlight, but we still had no way of seeing. We used our cell phones and computers to have light. Also, when there is no electricity, there is no hot water (read Cold shower!) and restaurant selections are limited. The food wasn't that good there and like the other person said, there is NOTHING to do in the neighborhood. We would not go there again.

  • Liked — Friendly staff, cute on the outside
  • Disliked — No electricity and no flashlights or generator

Stayed there in October 2001 (NOT 2002). Can't imagine that it has changed too much. Not really a fancy place. Not a dump, either. They have a pool and a gated lot for cars. Outdoor restaurant with a towering bamboo garden. No carpeting in rooms, though. Pretty simple rooms. Website is/was [--]. Friendly and helpful staff. Neighborhood is very dark at night. Very convenient to La Selva Biological Station and Sarapiqui river tours.

  • Liked — Location -- proximity to rain forest
  • Disliked — Location -- not much going on in the neighborhood
