Sometimes the small things are the best things. We arrived on Super Bowl Sunday, which would normally mean nothing, but this year, wonder of wonders, the Packers were in the SB. Despite not understanding the concept of American Football, Henk found a nearby restaurant (the Tica Linda) where the chef set up for us and hosted an unforgetable super bowl party. We had a wonderful time! Heliconia Island is a little isolated, but very private. Felt like we were sleeping in a tree house. Next day we went white water rafting and had a great time.

Lonely planet writes this is the best garden in Costa Rica. So with expectations we travelled from San Jose in just 3 hours only to Sarapiqui. (From here it is easy to travel (2,5 hours) to Arenal or to Tortuguero.)
Anyway, at what we first called “off the road” arrival we parked our car just where our GPS told us to stop. Somewhere in a forest. Ehm, Ok? We saw a small walking bridge and started crossing a small river. And here we spotted our first monkeys in Costa Rica! Or, better, they spotted us. It must have been 20 meters, max. We continued walking and there it was. Great! What - a - garden. The friendly Dutch staff welcomed us. And they turned out to be not only nice, but hard working, honest and super enthusiastic about their own heaven on this little island. Do you like the birds? Over here you’ll find them plenty, in any kind of colours, size and shape.

Let’s be honest, Sarapiqui is not much of a town. But you don’t need it when staying this island. Our advise to all; do not miss these Heliconia pearls.

Nice cabinas with seats outside on poarch to view beautiful garden and birds. Quiet place. Rooms are neat but not very large, so with baby-bed not too much space is left. Ok breakfast, dinner is ordered in from nearby village and not advised. Tour through garden is highly informative and recommended.

I have to say that after reading the review in the Lonely Planet and the other review on this website, I was expecting something spectacular. What I found was a decent place with nice people in an okay location. We stayed here largely because of its proximity to San Jose, and therefore, the airport. The good thing is that we did have access to some nice areas of the rainforest. Closeby Tirimbina (about a half hour car drive) allows you to do a nice self guided hike.
If you are looking for a clean/safe place to stay that is quiet and slightly remote, this is your place. Our hosts were kind. My husband really enjoyed that Carolein took all of the guests out at night to search for frogs. The island definitely attracts a lot of gorgeous species of birds. We saw toucans feeding quite close to us. There are monkeys that live in the trees on the island.
One tip: don't stay there the night before a flight out from San Jose. There are two routes you can take from the island to the airport. The first one (the one just to the west of the island) is currently closed at the time of this writing because of an earthquake that happened in January. The route slightly to the east (both head south, obviously) is fine as well. However, after I had already paid for the room at Heliconia, I found out that sometimes that road is impassable due to floods or accidents. While the floods only happen a few times a year, if you are diverted for either reason, you can be re-routed a way that takes you 5 hours to get to the airport (it normally takes just under 2).
Truly, overall it could be a great option for some travellers. I think I was just expecting more because of its rave reviews.
