I visited Auberge St-Laurent as part of a large business group.

Pluses:

- Very good food with a delicate touch and some imaginative designs.
- Pleasant building and decor - more stylish than the norm.
- In a nice village, parking opposite and not far from Basel.

Negatives:

- Awful service - impossible to get anyone's attention. Lot's of staff...not sure what they were doing and when serving they still would not engage (think McDonald's staff in nice clothes moving around the table as if they have better things to do). My glass was empty almost the whole night.

This is our second time to this restaurant and we just loved it (again). The food is top notch, the service is very attentive and the setting is beautiful. We cant wait to go again...

We stayed in this hotel twice in April 2013. On both occasions, the food was excellent. The restaurant itself is a pleasant spot, more attractive inside than out. It has a courtyard where, I dare say, one can dine should we ever have a summer again.

A number of set menus are offered in addition to the alc. The obvious choice for us, and for most people dining at the same time, I think, was the €65 'A votre choix' menu; 4 courses (no cheese), 3 choices for each of the first three courses, alc for pudding.

Bouillabiae-based amuse bouches wee served on both visits,. Both times, we had foie gras de la maison to kick off, served with sauerkraut jam (strange but true), a rhubarb compote and a beef jelly. Excellent. A gewurztraminer vendage tardive accompanied it very well.

Second courses included very good, fresh scallops, delicious potato gnocchi with peas, white truffles and pea puree, and dover sole with clams and a citrus juice. All superb. We drank a delicious local riesling and a pinot blanc with these, both very good.

Main courses were rack of lamb, rack of veal and breast of pigeon. All very good indeed, especially the pigeon; I don't expect to eat a better one, ever, although two would have been even better. We drank a couple of local pinot noirs, one of which especially was outstanding, and a claret with these.

Puds were souffles every time, flavoured with Grand Marnier or whisky. These and the trimmings, in the form of ice creams, fruit and a chocolate cream that seemed to vanish when eaten, were top class.

Cheese was offered at €14; we could not have done it justice.

Generous friandises accompanied the coffee etc.

This is pretty classic French cooking, done very well, that deserves its Michelin star. The food is beautifully presented without being risible. The service is excellent and the staff charming. The list is extensive, with plenty of half botts (some of which we drank on our second visit) and a decent choice of wine by the glass (which we drank on our first visit), and the sommelier is helpful and pleasant. The restaurant was full on a Friday evening and if not full, almost full, on a Sun eve, so it seems that they are doing something right.

There are comfortable bedrooms available should you overdo it.

Criticisms? A supplement of €3 for the souffles seems a bit unnecessary. On both occasions, there was quite a gap between our first and second courses, but that sort of grub doesn't cook itself. Perhaps a slight overemphasis on the pea; it featured in almost all the dishes and although a splendid veg, one can have too much of a good thing. Our fault for going twice in three days, I suppose. Otherwise, I can't fault it.

Stopped here on route to a business meeting and our welcome was extremely warm and cordial we had a very nice round table for 7. We were presented with a very comprehensive menu,however, there was no English version so you must be able to understand a little of the language! Also the staff are not particularly good at English but between us we managed. The starters, main,cheese and deserts were magnifique ! I would certainly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is passing and are able to enjoy a relaxed and un-rushed dining experience.

I went to this restaurant in 3 different occasions, for business and friends and there is some consistency there: the service and friendliness are really, really lacking (but I guess Michelin-stars only focus on the food part). You have the choice in menus at reasonable prices, with some good research, be it in taste or visuals, but some sauces are really "buttery". In any case, this place is already famous and that may be the reason why staff there do not seem to really bother about whether you like it or not...
