My husband & I spend a few days at the Talbot Hotel recently with our two toddlers (aged 15months & 2.5 years). From the moment we were greeted at reception to the time we checked out, we had a great experience at the hotel where the staff are definitely the key to the success of this hotel. Even though there was clearly alot of functions being held in the hotel between Communions and Confirmations; the staff still have time to chat, smile & interact with our toddlers. This hotel is one of the best child friendly hotels we have stayed in where the staff welcome young children and make it their business to make them feel welcome at all times.
The food in this hotel as well is excellent; from the large selection for the breakfast buffet; to the extensive lunch menu and a mouth-watering dining experience at night time; I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is interested in tasting good cuisine. If there is something not on the menu that you would like do mention it to the Staff who are very obliging and will try to faciliate.
The Dome is conveniently located next door where our toddlers spend many a happy giggling hour interacting with other toddlers in two designated sections designed with them in mind. Look up the details of the Dome online to available of their toddler mornings & 2for1 deals.
Unfortunately my youngest son is going through a phase of being afraid of water at the moment so I didn't take him into the swimming pool but our 2.5 year old loved the pool and was asking every morning after breakfast to go to the pool :-)
I would totally recommend this hotel to anyone but especially families with children of all ages; we are planning our next return trip. (Member of Staff I would recommend is the blonde waitress in the restaurant who remembered all our details/drink orders/room number after the first night as well as the manger called Richard who we met in the restaurant & lobby who went out of his way to interact with our toddlers & to be hospitable )

Room Tip: We didn't use the Spa so can't comment on that ...

We arrived on Thursday to a warm and friendly reception and from then on in we received nothing but helpfulness from all the staff whom we came into contact with during our 2 night stay. Our Dinner was included in our package and it was beautiful to say the least and again the staff were helpful and pleasant and nothing was to much trouble. Our room was spacious and clean, we had a great few days rest and relaxation. I would highly recommend the Talbot Hotel Carlow to couples and families alike and will most definitely be returning.

Stayed on the Special Offer midweek deal of One Night B&B, Dinner & Bottle of House Wine.
This was obviously EXCELLENT value.
Room was clean, average, not too hot or stuffy.
Dining Room Staff, very pleasant.
Meal, Nice... better than hoped for on limited menu.
House Wine was Spanish White & Red & we opted for white to be on safe side... nothing worse than a nasty bottle of red! The White wine was fine.
Breakfast on chilly side but o.kay & you couldn't fault staff at anytime... all very helpful & pleasant.
Overall we'd say excellent & after breakfast we headed to Altamount Gardens which completed a very nice 24 break away from reality.

Room Tip: We asked for a quiet room... don't know if it helped but it was quiet & we slept well.

Reviewed April 24, 2013 via mobile

I stayed one night last week in the Talbot Hotel Carlow and it was not a good experience from start to finish.

Upon arrival at the hotel at 14.30, the Receptionist who checked me in seemed more concerned with counting her float than checking me in. She then proceeded to berate me for wanting to check in before 16.00 which is "official check-in time". The worst thing about this was that my room was actually ready and she could see that on her computer screen.

The room was not good. The bedding was a sheet and a blanket. No duvet. That may have been acceptable in lower grade hotels in the 1990s, but not in 2013. The pillows were so rough that I had to lay my head on three of them to get the same quality of sleep I would get from one at home. They were also so yellow that you could see it through the white pillowcases. Not good.

I went into town to meet friends in the evening and when I returned at 1.30, the lobby was full of college students drunk and screaming after attending a ball hosted at the hotel. I was stopped by the lift by a Duty Manager and a Security Guard with a guest list who asked if I was a resident. I told them I was and gave my room details. I then asked if I could have resident's drink to which I was refused as they were trying to get the students away from the bars and seeing me with a drink would only incite an argument with them. After much deliberation with the Duty Manager, I was told that I could ring down for a drink and it would be brought to my room.

I went to my room and rang down and the phone was answered by the Night Manager. I told him that I had spoken with the Duty Manager and he said that he was the manager in charge and that I would not be receiving any drink and then hung up on me. I went down to reception and met him and the Duty Manager came over and explained the situation. The Night Manager apologised as he thought I was one of the students looking for a late drink. I returned to my room and promptly my drink followed.

The next morning when I went to check out, I asked the Receptionist for the General Manager's email address; to be told that he was out on sick leave for an indefinite period. Now it is obvious that the reason the place is a shambles, is because there is no leadership in place. She told me he was seriously ill and I am sorry to hear that, but somebody needs to take the reigns in his absence.

I hate to leave a negative review, so I'll end it on a positive; that the Bar Staff are really friendly and helpful, and the barfood is very good. But other than that, it is a terrible hotel.

We stayed at this hotel last November it was not my first time when I like somewhere I tend to go back again the journey is less than 2hours from Dublin and easy to get to the hotel is just outside Carlow town, but has a dunnes stores supermarket and family entertainment centre right next to it the hotel itself is lovely a very big hotel but also very homely and friendly the rooms are lovely very modern the restaurant is located just off a corner of the bar and they also served bar food which was really nice. There was entertainment in the bar at live music and the staff were all lovely especially the bar staff
