“One night €99 voucher”
Reviewed February 10, 2014

Driving from Dublin was a breeze, easy access to motorway! Upon arrival into the car park, we were unsure of which door was the entrance to reception, we chose the wrong one! So maybe a little sign would of helped. We checked in with a warm welcoming and news that we were bumped up to a suite because it was my girlfriends birthday and they had the Blarney suite free. We got up there in less than a minute, well posted to see where we were going. The suite was amazing and a box of Butlers chocolates greeted us (the little things) Big Flat screen TV, very clean carpet (cream, which is a night mare to keep spotless) plenty of towels, beautiful bed. The décor was nice, very romantic! Then to top it off there was a Jacuzzi bathtub :) I have to say you guys ticked all the boxes and made it a roaring success. Breakfast the next morning was delicious and the evening meal was perfect, a steak!! Great service!

Room Tip: Ask if the suites are free that night you pick!

My sister and I, Golden Oldies, spent Saturday night in the Dolmen. We were there for the January Blues Buster which included a 4-Course Dinner and music by the iTuned Band and Niamh Strong and, of course, B & B. It was certainly a night to remember. Check-in time is 4 p.m. and we arrived from Dublin at around 2.30, as we planned to have a light lunch there first. There were plenty of parking spaces, the grounds are nicely wooded and the Barrow river runs along behind the hotel. The girls at Reception were extremely welcoming and cheerful; the room was already prepared and we were given the key straight away. As requested, we were in a twin toom (306) which was warm and pleasant and the ensuite was spotless and well equipped for our needs. Leaving our luggage there, we went back in the lift to the Bistro where we got some lovely hot soup and brown/white bread, served by a very pleasant girl.

The function was being held in the Barrow Suite and this was absolutely spectacular in that it was prepared as though for a society wedding. The numbered circular tables were resplendent in their white linen cloths, covered chairs, and each table with a 5-wing Candelabra whose lighted candles reflected on the shining cutlery. Well done! The setting was perfect. The waiter brought our wine to the table in a Cooler, as there was a facility whereby one may order requirements in advance. Dinner commenced at 8 p.m. - the food was hot, service was brisk and efficient. (Veg. Soup/Turkey & Ham or Salmon en Croute/4 or 5 Desserts/Tea or Coffee). The food was delicious, well presented, and accompanied by roast and creamed potato and mixed vegetables. The sauce was served separately by the waitress.
Second helpings were even offered at some stage, and were accepted by some "hungry hounds"!!

The Manager was in attendance, unobtrusively moving around and making sure that everything was done properly and that the guests were happy.

The Band arrived towards the end of Dinner and many people danced the night away. It was all very enjoyable and was excellent value. It was their second year attending this "Blues Chaser" for four people at our table, and others told us it was their THIRD year. That speaks for itself, I guess. Another couple at our table have booked their Wedding Reception in the Dolmen for next April, so it seems, with justification, that it is a very popular hotel. It was our first visit and it certainly will not be our last.

Our beds were comfortable and we had a good night's sleep and there was lashings of hot water on tap. Check-out was extended to 2 p.m. and breakfast was self-service. There was a good variety for selection from fruits, cereals, yogurts etc. It was interesting to see a separate container of low-fat milk beside the cereals, should that be favoured (good thinking) and, would you believe, a pot of honey! Wow! The cooked breakfast stuff was being kept hot by the Assistant who supplied any/or all of what was on offer, depending on taste or inclination....rashers/sausages/eggs/pudding/hash browns/beans etc. All the usual breads and rolls were available, with plenty of butter pats, marmalade and apricot jam. The tea/coffee pots were brought to the tables by the waitresses, cheerful staff who seemed delighted to be of assistance. The Manager was there too ... finding convenient tables, offering a cup of tea/coffee if one had to wait a few minutes to be seated. A perfect gentleman, he even carried our complimentary newspaper to our table and saw that we were seated comfortably. Getting old has some compensations after all! Thank you Manager and be proud of your Dolmen.

Have stayed in The Dolmen on many occasions & you are always met at reception with a friendly welcome. Staff are very helpful & friendly throughout the hotel. It's location is ideal only a short 5 minute drive in to the heart of Carlow for shopping etc.. Food in the hotel is gorgeous whether you are in the restaurant or at a function. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Four of us stayed for one night. It was a party night with four course meal, live band till12 then DJ till 2am and bed and breakfast. We got the deal for €99 per couple (unbelievable bargain). Decor is a little bit dated but rooms are very clean and spacious. The food was really good (Turkey and ham or salmon both lovely). Staff are really nice and we had a great night. Definitely coming back and we'll be bringing more friends the next time.

My Husband & I stayed at The Dolmen Hotel last night. We arrived yesterday & were greeted by the most nicest friendly staff that we have ever met. This hotel is gorgeous...This hotel has character. We were attending the party night & this was a night to remember-The food was just divine,so fresh & so tasty. Also, our breakfast was so tasty & once again-so fresh. The staff were beyond excellence.I cannot understand why this hotel is only rated at a 3*** Without doubt this hotel should be a good 4.5* As for the staff...10+*
(Since I'm being so honest I might as well say...I'd only one small fault-We stayed in room 201,A noisy spot-Got no sleep at all :( However, this would not defer me from returning to this Superb Hotel...This Hotel is so worth a visit) Also,I can't believe the wedding deal they are doing at the moment-100 guests, wedding car,dj & other perks...E4,000.This Beautiful setting would make your wedding day extra special...Pity I'm married!!!

Room Tip: You won't be disappointed with this hotel!

Dear Estelle,
Thank you for your glowing review of your stay with us for our January Blues Buster party night. I am delighted to read you enjoyed both the party night & your hotel stay in general. Your comment about rating our staff as 10star is very much appreciated as we know our friendly & helpful staff are one of our biggest assets.
Your right that we are a 3star rating at the moment but this is mainly due to the fact that the decor in some of our bedrooms needs updating & I'm very happy to say that we are currently undergoing a refurbishment programme within the hotel which will see us upgraded to a 4 star rating over the coming year or so.
Our wedding packages are unbeatable value alright & these along with our scenic setting & beautiful views of the surrounding natural countryside have made us one of the top wedding venues in the South East. We also go great special wedding anniversary celebration deals so maybe you could take advantage of this instead :)
Thanks again for your excellent review & high recommendation. We look forward to welcoming you back to stay with us again.

Booked a one night package which included tickets to see Brendan Grace.Check in was very quick and staff very friendly and efficent. Our room was good size clean and met our needs. The show was excellent. We enjoyed a very good breakfast. The only complaint i had was with the evening meal while there was a good choice on offer i chose the roast beef which was disappointing i mentioned this to our waitress she immediatley offered to get me something else i declined the offer, my husband had the salmon which he really enjoyed. On checkout we were given a discount on our stay to acknowledge the problem with my meal the staff member thanked me for bringing my complaint to their attention. I have to say all the staff we met were very friendly and helpfull. I hope to return to The Dolmen Hotel very soon. Tip if travelling on M9 take exit 6 (as this will leave you just a few minuets drive from the hotel) and not exit 5 as advised on the AA route planner. I will definitly be recommending The Dolmen to family & friends.

Room Tip: Ask for room at back of hotel

I found the Dolmen to be only ok to poor. However some points i have to elaborate on
We were at a wedding. Upon arrival the front bar was charging almost 5 euro for a pint of lager. It wasnt cheap, but thats ok. When we moved into the functino room, the cost was still almost 5 euro. However at some stage during the night, it changed to 5.10. I flat out refused to pay this, and instead went out to the front bar that continued to keep the same price. First i believe that this is not allowed, you must display your prices and keep to them. Second, its just greedy and underhanded. Its not like people werent going to spend money.

The food was ok, no better than a bar carvery. The rolls for the soup were rock hard, but not over cooked as all were pale white!

Breakfast the next morning was good

Overall, it wouldnt be my choice for a venue

Hi J_Carlow.
Thanks for taking the time to feed back to us on the wedding you attended here with us.
I'd just like to respond to your points on our bar pricing. Price differential between hotel bar & function room bar is normal & standard practice in the industry. Cost's are more expensive for function bars due to higher staffing & service levels & in particular bar extension fees & we include the bar extension complimentary within all of our wedding packages.
I'm surprised to read your comment about the bread rolls as we are one of the leading wedding venues in the South East & as you'll see from many other guest comments on this site, our wedding food regularly receives glowing reviews from past guests, however I will pass your comments back to our chef.
Thanks again for your feedback,
Regards
