Caffe Formenti is already well known for its lunchtime service, which is the best in town; however, it also serves evening meals on weekends and in a word, they are spectacular.

Authentic Northern Italian cuisine at prices that won't break the bank, and excellent service from all the Staff. Richie and Christina are a husband and wife team that put real love into their food, and it shows.

Go there one evening, you'll be amazed, I promise.

Wander in off the cold windy street to this warm little hub of great food and guaranteed banter from friendly staff and customers alike. Owners of the bistro, Cristina and her partner Richie provide a warm welcome to locals and travellers alike. With a seating capacity of about 35, this place is generally packed out at lunch and for good reason. The daily specials are just that; special and a very reasonable price of €12.

I've eaten here many many times and can without reservation and with a certain amount of drooling at the memories recommend several of the dishes. My all time favourite daily special was the Duck a L'orange. Two pieces of sticky delicious duck arrived on my plate, cooked to perfection and served with roasted vegetables. Their home cooked chips with their special seasoning mix are the best in town and not at all good for the diet once sampled.... Try their award winning Scuffin(combo of scone and muffin) with their excellent range of coffee. Try their fish of the day and their home made soups with home made brown bread. Try their hearty breakfasts...my personal favourite is the French Toast served with mushrooms, maple syrup and bacon on top.Opening from Tuesday to Saturday during the day, they also open their doors on Friday and Saturday for their new Northern Italian menu. We sampled their new menu on the first night and the place was packed to capacity. We were not disappointed by the food or the live music that night.

The staff get on well with each other, there's a family feel to the place and that spills out into service which is friendly. Chef Richie wanders in and out of the kitchen checking everyone is happy, delivering good natured abuse with those he is familiar with and jovial greetings to those he isn't.

It's a warm friendly hub with excellent food. It has become a regular haunt of mine since moving to Carlow six months ago and I have no doubt I will be a regular for a long time to come.

Try to get here at least once a week. The décor is lovely, service friendly and efficient and the food speaks for itself! Fantastic! One word of advice, to avoid disappointment get in early before all the tables are full!!
