We have just spent a night here breaking the journey between Arrowtown and Franz Josef. It has been a good choice as Haast is quite remote. Neroli was a great host, recommended places for dinner and made us a grateful pot of tea on our arrival.

Our room was lovely with a king size bed, plenty of suitcase storage space and the most fantastic view from the window.

Breakfast was beautifully cooked with cereal and stone fruit to start and a full English to follow.

Thank you Neroli for your hospitality and the great suggestions of good walks for the day we left you.

Outstanding hospitality from Neroli and Brian who welcomed us into their home like old friends.
The house is large and comfortable, although some might not find the contemporary furnishings to their liking. Rooms exceptionally clean and comfortable. Free Wifi in room but no tea/coffee making facilities nor TV, though Neroil quite happy to make drinks.
The house is isolated and the nearest food is 10 mins away in Haast (which is a pretty uninspiring place); we went to The Craypot in Jackson's Bay which is about 30 mins drive south.
Views over the beach really refreshing.
Good breakfast choices including freshly cooked.

Our GPS couldn't find Cuttance Road Haast but the friendly locals were quick to point us in the right direction. Neroli greeted us on arrival and as there was only one other couple staying, we had a choice of rooms. We chose one looking out over the sand and sea. The rooms are small but comfortable and well fitted out. Our host was very friendly, pointing us in the direction of Jackson Bay and 'the best fish and chips on the South Island' as well as sending us out to photograph the fantastic sunset, definitely not to be missed. Neroli cooked a full breakfast and, having grown up in the area, regaled us with lots of funny and interesting tales of the area. A lovely place to stay off the beaten track. Maybe a more comfortable couch to sit on while having a cup of tea and admiring the view would be an idea!

The wild west coast of NZ is stunning whatever the weather.
After arriving in Wanaka from Mt Cook late one afternoon and being told that we had about 75 minutes to drive from Wanaka over the Haast Pass to Haast before the road was shut due to rock avalanches, I had no time to spare. In teeming rain, I put the foot to the floor, as best I could and with luck and little traffic along the Mackenzie Plains and Lake Wanaka, made it past the road barrier with 10 minutes to spare.
As we descended the Haast Pass, the cloud lifted, the rain stopped and the brillant blue sky and sun heralded our arrival at Collyer House.
Our hosts, Sandra and Dennis met us at the door with welcomes and a cup of fresh coffee. Our room, the O'Leary Room, had the late afternoon sun streaming in and the screens keeping the sandflies at bay.
The House is a heritage reminder of the cattle droving family with a long history lovingly recorded in books in the House. Its spectacular vista overlooks a tidal lagoon at the top end of Haast Beach and you can just pause and listen to the wind and surf punding the ancient coast.
Sandra's recommendations of activities for our 2 days covered jet boat tours, helicopter pickups on the back lawn, lobster-munching in Jacksons Bay and dinners at 2 local hotels which provided solid if not rather good fresh dinners with a choice of very good local NZ wines by the glass.
Our two days were spent out and about, up rivers on cruises, eating fresh fish, walking on beaches and along glaciers.
Each evening there was wonderful hospitality in the House of gossip with friends, coverning cooking, travel, politics and life.
The facilities were excellent - we slept like logs after all the west coast fresh air, the ensuite waters were hot on demand and the breakfasts were filling and freshly cooked.
A seriously fabulous place and our hosts were impeccable - highly recommended!

Room Tip: Ask for the O'Leary Room or a room facing west that overlook the gardens for the full sounds of...

We only had time for a single night stay. Everything was delightful. Sandra, our host, was filling in for the owner, who was traveling for about three months. We really enjoyed our conversations with Sandra, but unfortunately we did have time to explore the area. This was our mistake. The rooms are large, the views are fabulous, and the food was very much to our liking! Spend more than one night!

We enjoyed Haast and the Collyer House. We didn't meet the owner, but that was OK. Sandra was informative and even though she was a novice, she made a good breakfast. The house is very nice, especially with the fireplace and big windows. The other rooms were better than ours, but all of them were overpriced, comparing with other places we stayed. I was a little disappointed...had been looking forward to it. Thought it was right on the beach, but we could not even find a way to get to the beach until we were leaving the next day. Interesting place.
