We, like other reviewers stayed at Haast on our way to Queenstown...a long, tiring but beautiful drive. We found The Hard Antler a welcome place for a drink and a meal. My partner ordered fish which he thoroughly enjoyed (and he really is hard to please) Me? I had the vegetable soup, which I must point out, was absolutely delicious. It was hot and obviously homemade, with chunky, rich veggies and served with fresh garlic bread. Couldn't fault it. This experience was totally different to a meal in Franz Joseph the previous night...twice as expensive, lukewarm soup, and the rudest waitress ever!!

We ate here today en route from Queenstown to Franz-Josef. The other place we tried in town was shutting its doors at 4:00 so we headed to the Hard Antler to seek out some sandwiches (4 adults/4 kids). Place was pretty dead, but not surprising for that time of day I guess. They still were offering the lunch menu, which included the fried fish, crab, calamari, scallops and clams and chips (2 people/$24). Our kids ordered sandwiches - basic cheese, ham and white bread ($6). We also ordered 2 kids' chicken nuggets and chips (4 small frozen nuggets + chips for $7). Both of the adult pairs ordered the fried fish/chips as mentioned above. The fried fish (white fish) was in a beer batter - very good, once we salted it. But the rest of the fish (scallops, prawns, clams and artificial crab) were really bad. Just "off" and obviously straight out of the freezer. We were expecting much better considering the location of Haast, right on the ocean. Super disappointing, could barely choke down half of it. Waitress was nice enough but just not committed to making the experience remarkable in any way. Decor was pretty good considering the stark and cavernous building it is in. Overall, just really feeling like it was a poor value and super mediocre food. Dinner reviews from others look better, maybe that's when the real cooking and wait staff come on shift?

There aren't a lot of stops between Queenstown and Fox Glacier and it's a days drive. We stopped at the Hard Antler for refreshment and we were happy we did. The beer was ice cold and the fish and chips were well prepared and plentiful. It's sort of a local hang out with pool tables. The service was fast and friendly and they have outdoor seating.

We arrived after 8.30 pm but were welcomed and enjoyed delicious nachos. Great staff and service. Mixture of characters to "people watch"!

Great atmosphere, food and service. Friendly staff. The ambience sets the scene for a warm meal and cold beer next to a warm log fire in amongst a wonderful wilderness surrounded by trees, rivers and the ocean. You can't get bored here. You can relax and watch the world go by or go hunting or fishing or both. What a wonderful location.
