If you want to go boating or swimming, Oeschinensee is not exactly your dream destination. To enjoy a pleasant walk from Kandersteg, up through the pastures and pine forests, surrounded by mountain peaks, you chose the right place. It's not a walk you'll do in a few minutes, especially if you intend to walk all the way back. But the serenity of this land-, or should I say mountain-scape, will surely reward you for your efforts. If you really feel your oats, there are numerous paths, leading further up or along the lake. Take your time, sit back and enjoy all the mountain sides, the waterfalls and the beautiful, blue lake. Lucky for all of us, there are still places like this; away from all the nervous running around and the noise of our cities.

This trip was a real winter wonderland. walking across the frozen lake to view the most amazing frozen waterfall pillar of ice was incredible. It was a special part of our trip and a memorable experience. The cafe overlooking the lake was great. To sit outside surrounded by ice and snow and look out over the lake was amazing. A truly special place.

The lake is beautiful in the winter and fun to hike around (the trail is groomed, so it's easy to walk on even without snow shoes), but it's even more fun to sled back down to Kandersteg. You can rent a sled from the InterSport shop at the bottom of the gondola lift (20 CHF for the day, 10 CHF deposit), take the lift up -- get a day pass (about 36 CHF) if you think you are going to go up 3 or more times -- and follow the signs to the start of the sledding trail. The path criss-crosses the ski slopes and lifts, but after you pass the Hotel-Restaurant Oeschinensee (a good place to stop for lunch) it's pretty much a straight shot down the mountain to the village. The trail is 3.5km, so it's a good long run and a great way to enjoy the mountains. It's steep enough to get going at a good clip, but not scary -- just an exhilarating cruise down. I encountered families, an ice fisherman, and a few senior citizens in my trips down the mountain. Highly recommended.

To reach up there, we had to take a gondola which was a great ride with beautiful view of Kandersteg below.
The view when you reach the top is an unforgettable sight with snow-capped mountains everywhere you look.
You have to walk for a while from there to reach the lake.
The lake is quite a sight with mountains in the backdrop, some with waterfalls. You can spend an hr or more easily here, just exploring and loosing yourself to beauty of Nature.
There's also a restaurant nearby if you're hungry or thirsty or just want to sit-down and enjoy great view of the lake down below.
The whole setting is quite surreal. Something to experience!
Since its a big tourist attraction, expect crowd - families lounging on the banks or kids throwing stones in the lake or dogs fetching sticks.
