We stayed at the hotel for the first time last year and it was a not bad experience (even though the child care that was advertised was not available). This year, we reserved again but couldn't go and thus had some queries about re-booking. The owner/manager was aggressive and accusing in answering them so we ended up canceling the whole trip. We won't go back there.
This was our second visit. We had stayed over Christmas / New year and enjoyed the snow, and wanted to see it in warmer weather. The hotel and the location did not disappoint. The hotel had only just reopened for the season and felt a bit empty, and there was still some work in progress - new fire doors being installed - but it did not intrude. The family and the staff were mostly accommodating and efficient, the food was fine and the service mostly so, although we soon learned our lesson to not let our waitress - the lady of the house, I believe - go by, and be ready to order when she deigned to visit our table in the small downstairs restaurant. We also found it odd that having practised our German the other waiters preferred to use English - they were not Swiss and German was not their first language also.
The hotel's location is great, right on the main street in the village, and everywhere was easily accessible. The pool and other facilities were very good as well, and we got our money's worth.
We have been to the Hotel Ritter four times in the past year or so. It is the place we seek when we need to recharge. We've stayed in the heat of the summer, the crisp chill of autumn and in the white magic of winter and have never been disappointed. The owners, Casi and Mimi, know and greet us by name - including our three children. They and their staff take such pains to make sure we are comfortable and cared for. Although Kandersteg is a sleepy little town, our three very active boys (12, 10 and 6) LOVE to visit. We hike up to the lake, play tennis at the hotel; play Frisbee on the hotel lawn; swim in the hotel pool. In between, we eat, drink and relax. This is not the place to go if you are for looking glitz and glamour. It is the place if you are looking for genuine warmth and hospitality.
i have been going to this hotel for 20 years always with my mum and sister. My three children now go with us but we keep it as a girls only break. Kandersteg is a sleepy mountain village with stunning view . It is a truly magical place and the air is unique. The hotel Victoria is run by the Platzer family. When we first went the older Mr Platzer ran it now Mr and mrs Platzer run it who are super fit nordic walking 4o somethings. Mrs Platzer loves her interior design and every year there are new things to buy. The staff are always the same and the dining room is beaufiful with chandaliers and high ceilings. The food is very good and we always love the silver service. The rooms are well maintained and very nice. Look out for the ghosts!!!
We stayed here for a week towads the end of the walking season and were not disappointed. Kandersteg is a lovely Swiss town and the Hotel Ritter/ Victoria is a great place to stay to make the most of what Switzerland has to offer.
The staff are absolutely fantastic: quite possibly the friendliest and most helpful that we have come across in our travels. Nothing was too much trouble. The owners Casi and Mimi are always around and Casi does a nightly round of all the tables in the restuarants, asking how things are, and what you had done that day/ plans for the following day, offering advice where necessary. It is a lovely touch and makes the stay so much more welcoming.
Taking note of previous reviews we asked for a Comfort Room and it was large, spacious and well appointed, with a sizeable ensuite and an excellent shower (vital after a day in the mountains!). However when we return we will ask for one that faces away from the town, as the road is quite noisy (you can close the window and this will reduce the noise to nothing, but we like the fresh air).
Breakfast was a feast and there wasn't really any need to fill your pockets as has been suggested in a previous review. You can get a packed lunch but seemed a bit expensive at 17 francs so we didn't bother, instead going next door to the supermarket and making our own.
The half-board evening meal is mostly 2 choices for each course. The choices didn't really suit us so we ate in the Ritter restuarant which is attached to the hotel, and we would very highly recommend this option, not just because you get the 25 franc half board fee reduced from your restuarant bill (I'm not sure if that is common or not, but it is an excellent gesture), but because the food in there is superb. Try the cheese fondue, the raclette and the special Tartarenhut, which is your very own BBQ on the table. However all the food was top quality, as was the service.
Overall a wonderful hotel with superb staff, for whom nothing is too much trouble, in a lovely lovely setting. We would very highly recommend it to anyone thinking of going to Switzerland and are hoping to return ourselves, but this time during the skiing season...
