On a walking holiday in the mountains of Switzerland, you might reasonably expect to meet like-minded people. Sadly, our stay was marred by not one conference but two conferences of students. Breakfast in particular was a bit of a free-for-all and dinner although not as bad was a very noisy experience. As for the lounges, they were almost exclusively used by the students during the day and evening for their studies and activities.
We had upgraded to a junior suite and it was a lovely room with balcony overlooking the front and good facilities. However be warned if you are from the UK. The electric points are not the same as the standard two point European plugs or even other hotels we have stayed at in Switzerland. No problem, you can borrow from reception for 20 Swiss francs per converter. We are always pleased if our hotel room has its own safe however here it was a key safe so we had to go back to reception and part with another deposit in order to get the key. As part of our stay we were given the use of a pass allowing us use of the local transport, which is a common practice in Switzerland. Again a deposit was required at reception so we were 70 Swiss francs down within a very short space of time.
There were very few non-student guests so we had been approached by the owner asking if we would be prepared to share a table with another couple as the hotel was so full. Both couples agreed as we were on the same holiday but independently so. However we felt rather aggrieved to discover the table we had given up was used almost exclusively by the owners and a family member. There were issues with how the tables were set up for self-service picnic lunch preparation, a fabulous facility, except for the onslaught of students who scavenged ruthlessly everything on it.

I did mention our unhappiness at the whole situation and whilst Kathy, one of the waitresses, was sympathetic and helpful, I found the attitude of the owner rather acerbic, especially in light of the fact that we'd helped him out by giving up our dinner table.

Reading other reviews, we were clearly unlucky with the timing of our visit and I could envisage a much more enjoyable stay minus large groups of students so research beforehand would be advised.
Please also take into account, that in a very short review, it is always the extreme or annoying things that prevail and are memorable. On a positive note, the hotel is in a lovely location, one of the cleanest and the majority of staff are charming and helpful.

From being picked up at the railway station to being taken back at the end, our stay at the Alfa Soleil was a true delight and the mountain views from our room at the front were amazing. Equally amazing was the food, all the meals were special, particularly Nico's soups. Peter the hotel owner's help and advice at Headwater's representative could not have been more helpful and was very attentive. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Alfa Soleil through Headwater walking holidays.

You can get no better service and hospitality than at this lovely hotel. The front office staff is always helpful and the bar area snugly. It is located conveniently on the main road to the village of Kanderstag for easy access to lifts and day hikes. And the restaurant is unmatched anywhere!

Spent 12 lovely days and nights at this hotel. Best view in the village - looking at mountains for breakfast and dinner each day. Staff went out of their way to ensure we had a great holiday. Interested in what we did each day - offered advice about walking routes etc, Food and wine excellent especially as we are vegetarians. Room good and kept very clean. Would recommend it to anyone staying in Kandersteg and look forward to returning here maybe one winter. Special thanks to Kathy for looking after us so well - and to Peter, Agnes, Alexia, Nicole and Nico for becoming our adopted Swiss family!! Thank-you again - see you soon

We asked for a room with a great view, and we got it! We were under the eaves on the fourth floor with a little balcony which looked onto a grassy field across the street and, much farther away, waterfalls, cliffs and glaciers. Gorgeous. We stayed 5 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay,

The staff here is sweet and the restaurant had the best food I've had in Switzerland. The salad is from their own garden next to the hotel.

The hiking out of Kandersteg is terrific.
