“Friendly, spacious, gourmet hotel in Kandersteg”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

The Alfa Soleil was a beautiful older hotel in Kandersteg: public spaces were extravagant, including a huge "living room" as well as a nice restaurant which served gourmet cuisine -- the filet of rabbit saltimbocca with risotto was my favorite meal in Switzerland. Hosts are terrific, warm and welcoming. Great location, about halfway between train station and cable car to Oeschinensee, both walkable. Highly recommended

The hotel is in a great location, food is very very good and service is excellent, rooms are a bit basic but fine. We did a walking tour from the hotel and it was only a few minutes to the centre and close to all the major walks. Hard to fault really overall.

It will certainly take some beating. Peter the owner collected us from the station on arrival, sat us down with a drink, got the map out and proceeded to show us all the best areas for walking, where all the cable cars were, bus times etc. The room was a good standard with a balcony looking out to the mountains. The food was very good every night, with a special mention for the soups ( wife loves her soup ) and the breakfasts were also of a high standard. We noticed while walking around the village during the evening that Nico's ( hotel restaurant) was always the busiest. The Olympics started while we were there and Nico ensured the bar television was set to BBC1 for the opening ceremony. We had a very amusing time with some other guests and the owners Peter,Agnes and Nico joined us. They couldn't believe it when the Queen jumped out of the helicopter with James Bond :) Nothing was too much trouble for them. If you want a taste of the real Switzerland away from some of the more famous tourist hotspots like Wengen or Zermatt, Kandersteg would be a very good choice with plenty of unspoilt scenery and hidden valleys. We are very likely to visit again and will not hesitate to stay at this hotel.

Just returned from 11nights at the Alfa Soleil in Kandersteg and I've got to say it has been a fantastic holiday.
As soon as we arrived we were made to feel so welcome. All the staff were so friendly and very helpful.
We stayed in room 438 - type flair - It was basic and the bathroom is ready for an update. We did not have a balcony but then we did not request one.Even though it was a basic room it was very clean, spacious and comfortable and the views were fantastic.
I would however reccomend paying extra for a balcony so you can appreciate the views even more.
The hotel is a 3 star and I would say that is a fair rating but the food, hospitality, location, Peter,Anges,Nico,Thomas and all the staff are definately 5 star.
I have never stayed in a hotel where the food has been consistently excellent. We had something different every night and it was amazing.
Kandersteg is a quiet and peaceful village with plenty of walking opportunities. So definately take advantage of Peter's knowledge, he is more than happy to help.
I would definately stay here again and highly recommend to my friends.
Thank you to Peter and Anges for such a lovely holiday

Simply excellent from start to finish - from the warm welcome at reception by Nico, the Chef as it turned out, to our friendly check out a few days later, by Peter the owner.
We've been to Kandersteg lots of times before, but wanted to try a different hotel this time, and were not disappointed.
Kandersteg is not a big place, so all the hotels in town have excellent locations with great views of the surrounding mountains, and Alfs Soleil rooms all look out onto the mountains, and I think most have balconies. We had a 'superior double' and it certainly was that, with plenty of space and windows and french doors onto the balcony, where a couple of seats allow you to study the views in comfort.
Nico endeavours to use local produce in his cooking as much as possible, and the food couldn't be faulted. Service the first night we dined in was excellent, the second night was a little less attentive, but still fine.
Although we'd been before, Nico ensured we were updated on all the options to explore the area, and the 2 walks we did were well worth doing - if a little exhausting. The cable-car trips up the mountainside are a great way to start your day, and then the walks over well maintained, but sometimes a little strenuous paths, were excellent. The moutanside cafes/restaurants were most welcome as half-way pit stops for lunch and refreshments.
All in all, a great part of Switzerland to visit, and a great place to base yourself whilst exploring the mountains.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to have a balcony and look out onto the mountains either from the front or back of...

We stayed two nights in a Junior Suite with an incredible view into the mountains, complete with waterfall. All the staff are excellent and clearly strive to make you feel special and comfortable. We traveled with our two dogs and they accommodated us to the point of setting up special tables so we could dine with them under the table and out of the way of other guests. The food at Nico's is fantastic -- fresh from their robust garden, prepared with care and presented in a gorgeous manner. Excellent wine list but get a Swiss recommendation from the owner -- delightful! Good, hearty breakfast options. Owners very helpful with information on hiking and getting around the area. They have a piggy bank at the front desk for the staff tips which, if you don't read through the guest brochure entirely, you may miss . . . but believe me, you will want to tip them when you leave!

Room Tip: The Junior Suite was recently remodeled and is large and delightful with an excellent view and a sma...

Once you get past the issue of adequacy of the bedrooms (are they clean, not cramped), the most important thing to me is the staff. Do they make you fell welcome, are they helpful and pleasant? By this measure the Alfa Soleil excels. Peter, the owner, came and got our luggage from the train station when we arrived unexpectedly early. He was helpful in pointing out hiking, making sure everyone got where they needed to be, and just generally made sure we had a pleasant stay. The dinner and breakfast were both excellent, the location quiet and convenient. Kandersteg is a bit pricey so compared to other hotels, prices were reasonable.
