We spent one night during a hiking trip through Switzerland. The village of Kandersteg is nice but the main road through town (on which a lot of the hotels face) is busy because this is the access road to the tunnel going towards Italy. The hotel is a bit out of the centre of the village on the main road. The room we had was quite big and interior was good. However we had a terrible sleeping experience there: we got a room on the first floor overlooking the road and didn't manage to sleep much all night due to the cars passing by and the noisy customers of the pub congregating in front of the room. Not what you expect in a sleepy little village when you plan to go hiking the next day! When we mentioned the noise from the pub to the management at 10pm they told us this would stop at midnight (at closing) and they couldn't do anything about it!...however to management's credit the noise from the outside pub patrons did stop so we assume they did do something about it. Breakfast only starts at 8am, which is quite late for hikers, so the owner arranged to leave us some food on a tray in the entrance. It wasn't a great selection and it seemed some people ate part of ours before we got there and when we told management we got a shrug... it was time to get the hiking boots on and get out of there!
