“Close but no cigar...”
Reviewed January 2, 2012

We staed at The Cambrian for one night in early August 2011, so this review is based on a very short stay on only one occasion.

On arrival there were no parking spaces available, despite us having booked one in advance through Mr & Mrs Smith. We were on a road trip in our own car which I wasn't happy to park down the street - after being insistent, they agreed to move their minibus so that we could park at the front of the hotel.

The design of the public areas and rooms is very good. Modern but in keeping with the Swiss chalet look and quite relaxing. Bathroom and room were a decent size, plus very clean and everything worked well. Balcony view across the valley is stunning.

Spa areas are nice but very busy (we stayed on a Saturday), plus two teenagers were pretty much going to 3rd base in the outdoor pool. Staff in the spa are thin on the ground.

The restaurant is cripplingly expensive - the a la carte menu is more expensive than The Ledbury in London and the food is more Swiss Beefeater than Le Gavroche. Guigal Cote du Rhone was about 75 euros a bottle!!

I wouldn't say avoid this hotel, but I would avoid the restaurant and keep the stay to 2/3 nights.

To be honest, I don't think I'd go to the Cambrian again on a Saturday - it is fully booked to the last room and overcrowded, especially the spa area in the afternoon. This makes absolutely no enjoyable spa experience, except you enjoy being close like Sardines with stranger couples and the occasional group of idiots who do the cannonball into the already overcrowded pool (which is definitely to small for the number of people on a Saturday afternoon). The dinner is also medium great, as you have almost only silent couples in the restaurant.

But: A completely different ballgame on Sunday! After the pack had left, we stayed for the whole day. I think this is superb service that you can use all facilities on the day of your departure! An empty pool with just a few other folks, drinks service in the pool in plastic glasses, a superb panorama from the pool and the sofa lounge above, free cake at 4pm, very friendly staff - the Sunday deserves nothing less than the full score!

Excellent design, cozy bed, DVD player, free Wifi, great bathroom, fantastic. If you arrive by bus, the hotel is literally across the street.

We stayed in a North Side room and while I guess that it is well worth spending the extra bucks on the South Side room with balcony, we spent the time on the terrace or the panorama sofa lounge, had the same panorama and when we returned to the room it was dark anyways.

Words cannot describe what a wonderful retreat this hotel is. From the moment we walked in, the staff was wonderful - pleasant and helpful. The spa is relaxing, clean, and well equipped. The massage was adequate - the oils smelled good, the room was nice, the masseuse was nice, but the massage was just ok. The restaurant was wonderful - food was inventive and they catered to our vegetarian requests. The hotel was decorated for xmas, and the non-xmas artwork was really cool - done by up and coming Welch artists. The town itself is quaint and the winter hikes are amazing. HIGHLY recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony, if possible.

The Cambrian Adelboden is a nice clean modern hotel with a wonderful ambiance & great contemporary interiors. It is well located & has a beautiful indoor as well as outdoor pool.
The breakfast service is neat & clean but quite disappointing. It just doesnt live up to the mark of a good swiss breakfast. I think they are not sourcing ingredients of the highest quality.
Bedlinen is not changed daily which is a pity.
Generally the staff are clinical & unhelpful. They only want to give standard service & no more. There is no effort whatsoever to go even an extra inch, forget the extra mile.
It is unfortunate that the Swiss in general & the staff of this hotel in particular, although polite & decent people do not understand the concept of 5 star hospitality. Especially in these difficult times when purse strings are tight & bonuses are not easily forthcoming, they should do there best to please their clients so that they keep coming back but alas they are incapable of doing so.
Even the General Manager Mr. Gerald Nowak was ineffective & unhelpful.
In the entire hotel there was only one waiter who was truly giving service with a smile. I regret that I did not get his name, which I would have been happy to mention as he was extremely courteous & service oriented & always smiling.
I would only stay at this hotel with very low expectations & only until a better choice comes along.....

I stayed here for 4 days in a snow storm. Loved the views from the winter garden and the spa pools were amazing. Great location and good food. Not traditional swiss. Modern alpine.

We stayed at The Cambrian for two nights. It's a very modern hotel with a nicely designed lobby. There's a bar and a sitting area with a great view of the mountains. The room we had was a Junior Suite and was very roomy with a large bed and a large lounge room and a balcony overlooking the valley. The bathroom was wonderfully tiled and we loved it! We were travelling with a baby and were well looked after, the hotel provided all the assistance we needed.

The wellness area is not large but big enough to relax and forget about everything. The sauna is very modern and nice. The indoor pool is very modern but the water rather cool, especially when you go for a swim in the indoor pool after you've been outside. The outside pool is the most amazing pool I've seen in Switzerland. It's heated to 32°C (90°F) and provides a wonderful view over the valley and the mountains around Adelboden while you're relaxing on the massage bed. It's best visited early in the morning or after sunset, when the sun only shine on the peaks and you can follow the airplanes high up in the sky.

We had dinner at the restaurant twice. The service is great and the prices reasonable. The food tasted good but a little bit too salty (but that is relative).

We can recommend The Cambrian to everyone. What a hotel.
