“Fantastic Hotel”
Reviewed October 20, 2011

This was my second visit to the Cambrian Hotel in Adelboden when we (16 adults) returned to celebrate my 50th birthday for 3 nights.

The hotel itself is in a prime position with views to take your breath away. If you are visiting Adelboden and want to stay in a hotel that is really special this is the hotel for you.

The Cambrian Hotel offers a contemporary feel with a relaxed vibe and comfortable seating areas and that all important open fire. I stayed in the Presidential Suite which had 2 double bedrooms, 1 single room, 3 bath rooms and a guest cloakroom, with a large sitting room with 2 balcony's overlooking the Alps - beautiful.

As always the staff is what makes this hotel even more special, starting with a warm welcome from the reception professionals to the restaurant staff who were consistently polite and smiling giving a great service. This is what I remember from from my first visit and was one of the main reasons I decided to host my 50th birthday celebrations at the Cambrian .

I was personally welcomed back to the hotel by the management Team who made the effort to introduce themselves to me. I cannot praise the management team enough and a personal thank you to Helge, Susan (you are an asset to the Cambrian) and Catharina who helped me arrange this trip and for making it special.

I am already planning my next trip - Cambrian staff keep up the good work and Thank you from all 16 of us.

The Cambrian is in the middle of Adelboden with a spectacular view across the value. The room (a junior suite) was large with a balcony, great bathroom and stylish furniture. In general, the staff was friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay with a few caveats:

1. They don't have enough parking and hence you may have to use the town lot, which is a bit more expensive. Also, their drive way is a bit of a chaotic mess and some of their parking attendants don't seem to have a strong grasp of either German or English.

2. The Spa is very small and it was all booked up when we were there.

We spent 1 night at the Cambrian and it was really nice. The weather outside was cold but a nice little fire place warms you up (with tea time and cakes at 4.00PM). The deluxe panoramic room as very confortable (large bathroom with walkin-in shower).
The diner was average but the breakfast is really worth it! Very large choice and nice service.
The only negative thing was to be woken up early by the cleaning ladies talking loud in the hall in front of the rooms. We mentionned it at the reception so it shouldn't be a problem anymore.

Room Tip: Panoramic rooms are facing great mountains, pool side.

I stayed for two nights at the Cambrian in mid August with my girlfriend. We stayed in a Junior Suite with a balcony. On our arrival we were greeted with chocolates and a wonderful fruit selection in the room. The room itself was beautifully fitted out with plenty of space and was very clean.

The staff were very friendly, spoke good English and were helpful. Breakfast in the morning was a standard selection of juices, tea, cereals, pastries and hot food. In regard to breakfast the only criticism is that the 'fry-up' selection is a little limited (however I've never found a European hotel who does this as well as the Brits).

The Spa consists of some steam rooms, massage room, indoor pool, small outdoor pool and half a dozen sun beds. You have to book a massage, the rest is there for you to enjoy - and it's very hard not to enjoy. The outdoor pool is extremely warm - a great place to relax and catch some sun - if you want to swim then use the larger indoor pool.

The most important thing is the view - make sure you get a balcony over looking the valley as the views must be the very best in town. You get an amazingly unobstructed view across the valleys of the mountains from the Spa, breakfast room and many of the bedrooms.

Many people have commented on the cost of visiting - this is not an issue with the hotel so much as all of Switzerland - it just isn't a cheap place!

I would recommend visiting - especially in summer when it is extraordinarily warm!

We stayed in the summer and were quite happy with our experience. The area is very scenic, reminiscent of the South island of New Zealand.

Our first room was 'nice' but had a bit of an apartment type feel - it was long and narrow but with a large balcony. We got switched to a top floor room which a much smaller balcony but was much more interesting as it could see the beams supporting the roof. Depending on your taste, you might prefer one of the other. Fit and finish was good. This one had the same view but from so much higher up that you didn't have to overlook anything which made it nicer for us. You definitely want rooms with the view to the east.

Food was very nice. The breakfast was included and was nice - although for some reason there was only one day where someone was there making omlettes. Not sure where they went after the first day. The dinner menu was varied and the meals were nicely prepared. The wine list was also good.

My wife used the spa and it was a very good massage.

The pool is brilliant. Stainless steel - made for 'wow' reflections in the summer sun. The indoor one was nice as well but the one you really want to be in is the outside one. I can see that it could get quite crowded if you were here at peak occupancy times. The spa area also has a very nice steam room/dry sauna which would be really nice in the winter post a ski day.

The location is pretty much ideal - a minute from the beginning of the main touristy street for shopping.

Internet is included - always something that should get mentioned and encouraged.

The only downside, this is Switzerland and boy is it expensive here. This is not a place to be going and thinking about a budget as you will blow through it rapidly here. This is not a town for back packers having to count their money as they go along.

We did a great hike up to the falls and up the tram. Very scenic. Be advised, if you want to walk down its a serious trip that pretty much requires 'gear'. The path was not well marked and we ended up going down the 'klettersteig challenge' inadvertently. When people say 'it gets rocky' what that means is you should have lanyards and harnesses!

It was a very nice hotel in a very nice location albeit expensive (primarily due to being in an expensive location in an expensive country).

Room Tip: make sure you have an eastern view of the falls

I was prepared to rank this hotel among the most highly that I have ever stayed in, but a problem on the last night cost it in a big way.

First, the positives, bearing in mind that we plumped for a room facing the mountains, rather than a room facing the street:

+ Nice boutique design throughout the hotel. Very romantic, modern, clean, crisp.
+ Wonderful view of the mountains.
+ Balcony in room is a nice touch.
+ Breakfast was great.
+ Indoor pool was perfectly fine. Outdoor pool, while a little small, was fit for purpose and affords a great view of the mountains. Sauna is great.
+ Located in the centre of Adelboden, with easy access to bus routes and the Coop grocery store (not open on Sundays).
+ Friendly, young, English-speaking staff.
+ Expensive but high-quality restaurant for dinner.

But there was a problem. On the last night, the hotel was hosting a party of some form, perhaps an anniversary party. It started at 6pm ... and went until 4 in the morning!

We called at midnight to ask when the party would finish, and was told that it would end around 1am. We were prepared, somewhat grudgingly, to accept that. But 1am came and went, and when we called back, we were told that the new closing time was 3am! And at 3am we were told that the party would end at 4am. The front desk staff were very apologetic, saying that they had stationed somewhere at the party to keep the windows and doors closed, but evidently they weren't having much success.

We couldn't sleep, complained the next morning to management, and were eventually offered a generous discount for the evening. But we only got a few hours' sleep, which is precisely what you don't want when you are there to get up early and do a lot of hiking.

This hotel needs to figure out what it is. Either it's an upscale boutique hotel offering guests a romantic mountain hideaway (with the possibility of repeat business and word-of-mouth recommendations), or it's a nightclub for local Adelbodeners to get drunk and party till dawn. It's free to be one or the other, but it can't be both, and it should make the choice before its reputation is wrecked.
