Chalet RoyAlp Hotel & Spa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 9, 2011

We stayed at the Royalp this weekend 8/9 Oct and were rewarded with the first snow of the season. Off season the hotel was quiet but fully functional. We were rewarded with an upgrade and spa voucher giving a 30% discount. The room was very spacious and well fitted. We ate in both the formal resturant and less formal bar were we received excellent meals and first class service. The indoor pool is superb and the fitness room, albeit slightly crowded, is fitted with the latest equipment.
Ideally situated for access to the town and the slopes (own train stop) the hotel is an ideal location for that well deserved relaxing or action packed break.

Room Tip: Book your spa tratments early.

We stayed on a cheap deal from bookings.com flash deals so was not really expecting a lot from this stay. The hotel was to our suprise, excellent. We enjoyed our stay at the Chalet Royalp!

The hotel is big and has a relaxed modern chalet type decor which was nice and felt snug.
Our room - an executive (lowest band) was very nicely decorated and spacious with a balcony area - it felt more like a suite to us!!

Every hotel staff we encountered was super nice especially the reception and waiters and waitresses.

Breakfast was ok but not spectacular. One thing that annoyed me was that breakfast was quoted at CHF 35 per person per time which in itself is absolutely ridicious as the breakfast is definitely not worth this – at all! Anyway, we agreed to pay this being lazy and all but at checkout we were charged CHF 45 per person because we ordered eggs in addition to the continental stuff – an absolute rip off! Anyway, we argued our point at reception and they agreed on charging us only the CHF 35 per person which is still excpensive for what you get, So be wary how much breakfast costs if it is not included in your room rate!!

Dinner was good and the courses are well prepared. I think the hotel has Gault points for the food and we felt that this was well deserved. The chef came out to greet us which was nice.

The spa area was nice with good showers. Though sharing the pool area with kids running around wasn't pleasant at all! Jacuzzi was nice & if only they could separate this from the noise of the kids at the pool, it would be been perfect!!

The hotel offered us activity cards which can be used for the local transport and attractions so be sure to use this.

Overall a good stay. Breakfast is an absolute rip off so I hope management address this for future guests. Oh also they add tourist tax to your bill - but not sure if this is the same for all hotels in this area??

Recently opened in last 2 years this 'chalet' hotel & spa is beautifully designed..warm, mountain and modern style. Rooms are quite large and the closet space is perfectly adequate until you find out that you have a full walk-in closet as well. Even with nine pieces of luggage we were in great shape. The bathrooms are also big and nicely appointed. Service matches the wish of 'perfect Swiss service' except for the fact that most of the staff are from France (must have been Swiss trained at least). The property has a fancy restaurant with 'haute cuisine' indeed...the children's menu is the most unusual we have found anywhere with starters featuring "Tomato Salad" or "Scottish Smoked Salmon" and Entrees offering "Grilled Seabass" with fancy sides. The chef may be talented but he obviously does not have children. Apart from this very minor fact, the resort is perfect. They even placed a little alpine teddy bear in our son's bed as a gift.

The Royalp Hotel offers the highest quality of reception, comfort and dining. The hotel staff were exceptional. Our room was glorious, particularly if you have a lot of clothes. I have never seen so many closets in a hotel room. The bed was heaven and the marvelous bathroom was of the highest quality, and also had a shower. The bar and dining area were fun and the bartender deserves an award for interesting and five-star cocktails. The pool and wellness areas were also way above the quality/design of services and furnishings one usually encounters even in a five star hotel. I will most certainly go back here.

Room Tip: Definitely do the Roc d'Orsay as a walk. Villars is marvelous for hikers.

We opted for a two night getaway package including ski passes, and breakfast for around CHF 350 a night. Unfortunately, 2010-2011 was not a great season to ski in the area especially as the resort is not too high up. It's not a large ski domain either in the leagues of Verbier or Zermatt.

The hotel is relatively new and well thought out. It feels like a blend of American and Swiss, perhaps it was the newness of the place but I could picture this place in Vail or Aspen. The receptionist was probably also new and although very polite, seemed a but unsure of herself, and prefered to speak in English rather than French (which I found somewhat amusing). It seems like there may be a Russian clientele, and may be that is why.

The room was large, clean and comfortable, lots of cupboards, bathroom and toiletries perfect (once i understood how the shower worked). Balcony and view on the alps, although the automatic shades seemed to have a life of there own, moving up and down as the sun changed position.

First night dinner in main restaurant was a bit over $ and unremarkable. The second night, we had an absolutely fantastic fondue at the Grizzly, a much more relaxed and enjoyable experience. Athough I had reserved a time when I made the hotel reservation, they didn't have the reservation. They were apologetic and it was no problem to seat us.

We each had a massage at the spa, but didn't use the pool. Everything was well thought out and run. There is even a sizeable playroom for children.

Parking in the indoor parking is CHF 25 a night. They took care of all our skis and boots, putting them in a locker and giving us the key. There is a shuttle service in to the village and the small train to the slopes is just outside the hotel. You can ski back down, but the piste was closed due to a lack of snow.

We will definitely go back.
