Hotel Altana
Ranked #8 of 16 Hotels in Scuol
Reviewed September 4, 2012

My wife and I stayed here in August 2012 having booked as part of our self-selected two centre holiday through New Experience Holidays.
The Altana is conveniently situated at the the edge of the town almost adjacent to the railway station and bus terminus. It is therefore a very convenient location and, with the hotel being at a slightly lower level, there is no noise problem provided one has a south facing room.
Our en-suite room had a rather small shower but no bath. Daily cleaning by the chambermaids was quite adequate.
Breakfasts were substantial buffet style with eggs available to order at no extra charge.
Dinners consisted of 5 courses with a choice of main course. If the menu was a problem then an alternative meal could be made available.
Staying at this hotel had two bonuses as far as we were concerned. Firstly basic packed lunches are included for all half-board guests, a real bonus for walkers! Secondly the hotel is a participant in the Engadin Pass, a guest card which provides free travel on all local trains, cableways and buses - even including a 4-hour round trip into Austria and Italy!
All in all a pleasant family owned and managed hotel with friendly staff in a convenient location.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are quieter and have a view of the mountains

Having read the reviews below before our stay, compared with our own experience we could not disagree more with them!

Sorry that our review comes so late, as we stayed there in October.

We, my wife and I, spent a relaxing 3 day weekend at the Altana.
Arriving at the train station (this year by bus as the train station was under construction) we took the short walk to the hotel.
Walking trough the entrance we where welcomed warmly with a big smile. Ms. Lehmann brought us personally to our room and explained all the technical details available, Satellite TV with over 130 programs, radio/stereo tower and internet with d-Lan!!! (that’s the one trough the electrical plug) Is that what you call old fashioned?

The room looked like new for the fact that the hotel is over 10 years old! The furniture is still in best shape and smells good. The mattresses are not to hard and not to soft.
Our room was very clean. Not even on top of the full length mirror was dust! The balcony could use a new floor, true enough!

What shall I say to those amazingly big bath towels (seemed to be 2x1meter). I would make sure too, that my guest’s aren’t taking them along, if they where mine!
To charge a deposit for items not used in-house, is in most hotels around the world normal practice.

Well, with one point we had to agree, the Altana is located a bit out of town but you have the advantage to be directly at the train and bus station as well as only a 2 minutes walk form the cable car.

The dinners, we booked half board, were excellent. Especially the “Diner Cristal” was certainly something you could look a wile, to find similar good value for money. Ok, there is no bar but the lounge is a cozy place to stay if you are looking for a drink.

Our experience was so good, that we have booked for the winter season.

Rooms are clean and well spaced. The hotel's situation right next to the train station is convenient if you travel by public transport (although you have to put up with it not being quite as quiet as most locations in Scuol due to the train station as such and that being a building site this summer in particular).
The biggest disappointment were the staff - we didn't even get a 'hello' out of them, just a 'what's your name' and instead of 'good bye' we were asked whether we had paid (especially awkward since we were on a package deal which we had paid in advance!). They weren't actively impolite - just seemingly very, very annoyed at having to wait on people, which is strange, since it is their business. In short: go someplace else. Even the ultra modern youth hostel sitting on a traffic island appealed more to us than the Altana...

i have to agree with previous reviews - i stayed there recently and had a similarly disappointing experience. this hotel seems to have no redeeming features! shoddy food made with cheap ingredients so they can make the biggest margins, small and dirty rooms with a horrid outlook (ours looked over construction at the railway station), poor location (10 mins from town but even further from the pretty old town), no bar for a quiet drink before your meal, mean service - we were charged for the hot water that went into our thermos. it had none of the character or goodwill of the lovely swiss people we stayed with in the area. go elsewhere!!

The hotel Altana is situated right next to the station / cable car to the mountain. BUT - big but - it is not worth the money. We booked a relax offer, and we got so irritated, that we weren't very relaxed. The rooms are rather old, the balcony was practically dangerous (the planks weren't fixed properly and creaked a lot), and the whole thing just left the impression of "give us your money, we don't care about the rest".
A few examples why we think that this hotel is just eager to get money from guests:
- We had to pay an extra 5 francs for a litre of tap water for the included dinner (mind you, this is the Engadin, tap water is available everywhere, and in other restaurants you can drink litres of the stuff for free!
- When we got our bath cloths for the Bath of Scuol, we had to let them put an extra charge of 40 francs each on the bill, in case we didn't return the cloth. The comment of the hotel was: You know, we got it embroidered especially for us, and it might happen that you don't return it. I don't like a hotel that treats me as a possible thief.
- The hiking "food package" contained one little sandwich and an apple, that won't get you far.

All in all, i wouldn't go there again. We later discovered that other hotels gave you little baskets to put your bathing robes in etc., that they all had unlimited entry to the bath (not just once for 3 hours) and that they also included dinner for two evenings.

I simply felt ripped-off.
