“Handy for EPFL”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 7, 2013

Comfortable, modern and with excellent rooms, I used this when visiting EPFL. It is an easy walk through the campus (there are plenty of campus maps about) from the train stop. When next there, I will stay again.

Room Tip: I think they are all good, given my experience and what my colleagues said.

I stayed at the hotel for a conference for 3 nights and I cannot say the hotel contributed anything to making it a pleasant stay. Even though the rooms are nicely decorated and the location of the hotel is with sight of the lake, the hotel lacks everything: there is a "old" smell in the rooms (the carpet in the room looks and feels old which is weird as it is a newish hotel?), the bathroom seemed somewhat unclean, the service at checkin, in the conference room and the restaurant/bar is simply non-existent. If you want anything to drink after 23h you are out of luck.

Also, the metro station is a 10 minute walk from the hotel, so it takes quite some time to get into town by public transport. Taxi is around 25/30 CHF into town.

I really liked this hotel. It was very clean, the service was fantastic and very professional and helpful. The bed was awazingly comfortable. I wish I had that mattress at home! If you are staying at EPFL, this would be a great location but it is too far from the metro (10 min. walk) and too far from the city center(3-4 miles) to make it a great location if you were interested in going to the city center quickly for the restaurants or to go shopping without making it a longer endeavor.
If EPFL is your destination or if you have a car, this would be a great location. The area of Lausanne is amazing and having a car would help see more of it.

Room Tip: They seem to be all equal and all good from what I could tell.

A hotel to relax near the Lake and next to the campus of UNI EPFL.
The staff are young and very friendly. There will always help you. The breakfast is very good for Swiss conditions. A cook also serves you by breakfast buffet. The price for a penny pincher like me is obviously very high, but worth it. Even the Brunsch on Sunday is pretty good. The dinner is of course "a la carte" is also very tasty.
The way to the city center is quite far, but with the Metro easy to reach.
On the whole, I am very satisfied and very happy to recommend the hotel.

For a stay at the EPFL this hotel is a very good choice. The reception staff is friendly and very helpful. Rooms are modern and air conditioned and the beds very comfortable. The hotel is just a 5 minute walk from the campus. I very much enjoyed sitting on the terrace in the evening sun and looking out over the lake with the mountains in the distance. The breakfast did the job, and a real cook was present for your hot dishes. The weakest point was the restaurant. I twice tried small dishes (once a vegetable soup and the other time lasagna) and in both cases it really was pricey and absolutely substandard. Service was with a beautiful smile however.

Someone went to a lot of trouble to make this hotel very....average. Yes, it's hyper modern and uber-designed in look, a bit cubist in an almost lake-side setting, with state-of-the-art plumbing, air con and flat screen tvs in the room, complete with modern art. First impressions are good.

But leave the reception and hunt the elevator (round the corner and a fair way down the corridor) and you realise it's all too much style and not enough substance. The building layout is confusing, why do you need two lifts to get from the car park to room?

Service was not all there. There appeared to be a staff shortage, I rang for help with the aircon to be left ringing and ringing. The integrated shower leaks water, the shampoo/shower gel (White Company) a nice designer touch.

Most irritating for a business traveller? Was wifi free - really? The instructions were not clear and appeared to say not (perhaps it was free downstairs only?)

The aircon also needs a clear instructions leaflet, I found it was impossible to turn off.

Being charged 20chf overnight for parking was arguably the most greedy extra charge I've seen in a while. Fair enough to charge parking in an inner city area but in St Sulplice, in the middle of nowhere? Where is one supposed to park when one has two heavy suitcases to lug - 100m away?

Minibars, long a staple of hotel overcharging - here it was grotesquely over the top. I'm glad I had a spare bottle of water in one of my bags.

The real disappointment, however, was the restaurant. Dinner was very expensive - 50chf for a very ordinary and quite gristly steak. Swiss entrecote, allegedly. And breakfast was much worse. Congealed scrambled egg and stone cold sausages and bacon. I handed my barely touched plate back to the waitress and said (in French): "It's all cold", to be met with an indifferent shrug. There was no suggestion that they'd make me something else that was hot so I had a yoghurt and some cheese with a coffee. Not much for the additional 25chf I was charged for breakfast.

Great view of the lake when you're in the restaurant but, to be frank, I'd rather have had a decent meal.

Service and approach both need improving for a hotel which seems to see itself as catering for the business traveller. Lausanne's EPFL is opposite. Perhaps academics employed there have lower standards? I don't know about them but I wouldn't bother staying again, there are better hotels in nearby Ouchy and in the centre of Lausanne.

This is a business hotel for EPFL visitors, far away from downtown. The rooms are modern and have an unusual designer style. Therefore, inevitably, the rooms have impractical features. The showers tend to flood the bathroom floor and possibly even the room floor. The phone cable is not long enough to put it anywhere convenient. The window is very small even though the view could be nice (Lake Geneva, Alps). Phone calls are very expensive (CHF 5 for a local call). Staff in the restaurants (breakfast, dinner) are inefficient and confused. Expensive parking (CHF 20 / day), even though the hotel is in the middle of nowhere. Easy walk to EPFL.
