“Deliciously old fashioned”
Reviewed April 3, 2014

This is a very nice old fashioned grand hotel where the owners take great care to offer a personal service.
The hotel is kept in perfect condition.
Beware that all the rooms are very different: some are very old style while others are more modern. Most rooms on the higher floors offer fantastic views.
The hotel has a frequent shuttle to the nearby Corvatsch ski area.
It's a relaxing place outside of St Moritz without the hip and fashion people.

This is an exquisite place, not at all a typical five-star hotel. Following more recent architectural interventions, one can enjoy beautiful juxtapositions of old and new, e.g., the main entry and its overhanging roof, public spaces on the main floor, added staircase to the top floors, etc.
Hotel management and the staff are all extremely friendly, atmosphere is serene, food delicious. We enjoyed every moment of our stay!

Not far from St-Motitz and yet worlds apart, the Waldhaus in Sils-Maria is like entering the gentle world of a forgotten era. I think the fact that the hotel is privately owned by an old local family makes the difference: as soon as we got to the check-in counter the elderly owner came and introduced himself, as if this were a small inn with just a few rooms. In fact this is a big and rather grand old dame of a mountain hotel, well renovated, yet still very old fashioned in the old Swiss tradition. I loved the live chamber orchestra that played early evenings in the grand salon; it felt like being a very glamorous character in an Agatha Christie novel - despite the fact that not much happened, certainly no murder, to my knowledge..

Room Tip: There are many types of rooms with different price ranges, so hard to tell

You may find several luxury hotels with grand architecture in Switzerland. Sadly most of them, although having maintained their architectural legacy and character, succumbed to modern hotel management standards.
In this case you will be inmersed in not only a wonderful historic building on top of a hill overlooking a picturesque Swiss village and lake, but also in the atmosphere of how these traditional Grande Dames where managed many decades ago.
Huge elegant public rooms, afternoon tea with soft music beeing performed by a quartet, a grand restaurant in the old tradition plus an a la carte boutique swiss restaurant for a variation, reception greeting and checked-in by a member of the family that has owned the hotel for more than a century, a Concierge in the old professional tradition, daily activities program, and a general atmosphere of a place that is special.
We reserved a Junior Suite. We where shown to two rooms to choose from. We selected the furnished in classic style not because the other, furnished in the original turn of the century style what not nice, but because the bathroom turned out beeing larger. They also have modern furnished room but we prefered to stay away from them.
Our room was of above average dimension, with a modern beautiful bathroom with separate shower cabin and segregated WC + bidet.
The bed was king size very comfortable and the wardrobe space enormous. The shutters made sleeping very easy in total darkness and nothing was missing from what you would expect in a 5 star hotel with all the contemporary conveniences.
The breakfast and dinner served at the grand restaurant where excellent and the service of all the staff we met superb.
The swimming pool and Spa are at the level of this cathegory hotel with nothing to critize.
Complimentary WIFI works well but slow. I measured a speed of little above 1 Mbps, which is not high enough and below the standard of 5 star hotels.
In conclusion : a special experience in a luxury hotel in a very pretty location only 15 minutes from St. Moritz, sorrounded by woods and lakes.

Regarding our free WIFI, which we have new in the rooms since this summer season, we are still working on the best solution for a smooth connection in every part of this large house.

My family has been enjoying this wonderful hotel for about 15 summers now. With an idyllic setting amid majestic mountains, blue placid lakes and green, green trees, coupled with efficient, friendly staff and management, the Hotel Waldhaus Sils always delivers.

Well appointed guest rooms with amazing views and fresh air in abundance is very relaxing. An indoor pool and sauna to wallow in after a day of exploring the numerous hiking trails and alpine wildflowers is very welcome. Retail therapy when needed can be found in St Moritz, just a short drive from the hotel.

Culinary works of art are served at the Main Dining Room and the Arvenstube for dinner. Breakfast is a buffet and weather permitting dine al fresco for lunch at the terrace while listening to the melodies played by the Trios Farcas.

We are already very much looking forward to our next vacation in June 2014.

We had a really lovely dinner at the restaurant there!
The decor is very old traditional Swiss, plenty of alpine carvings on the walls, wooden panels everywhere and even wooden chandeliers!

It's not modern and it cannot be compared to a city 5* hotel; it's old fashioned and understated.
The service was immecable and they served each customers their dish covered with a silver bowl! When do you see this in any establishment in our modern day and age??
It was so cute.
The hotel manager appeared twice to talk to us and it turned out that his family owned and ran this hotel since his great-grandfather! He also remembers and knew of my husband's grandfather too, who was the tourist director of St Moritz at his time!
What's more, they obtain their wine through my husband's uncle too! This is a small world indeed!
So we had a nice chat and he explained to us a little bit of the history of the hotel, why his great-grandparents decided on this location etc.

The food was lovely! They are one of only two places close by to where we frequent that does the Rossini dish which is my absolutely favourite dish of all time!
Two things though - for starters I ordered the nüsslisalat with an orange dressing of some sort. It was very nice and I love nüsslisalat; but the dressing was a abit too sour.
Also, for the Rossini, the sauce was a bit too salty I thought.
But these are personal tastes and many people may disagree. Nonetheless I was SO happy to see Rossini on the menu!

A pianist and the cello was playing in the background, first in the main lobby bar before they moved into the restaurant bar. This added to the cosiness of the place. The restaurant was instantly transformed from an old fashioned, quiet restaurant into something from the 1920's, where classics would be playing softly in the background to the gentle tinkling of glasses and cutlery of the guests, as they whisper and mingle amongst themselves.
I personally love places where they play the old classics from swing, big band, all the oldies on a piano live as you enjoy your dinner and/or pre/post dinner drinks. And where they serve my favourite dish also, even better!

The price is incredibly reasonable, for St Moritz region. We will definitely go back again!
As for the location, it's set up on a small hill in Sils Maria, which is itself about 10-15 minutes further past St Moritz by car. You definitely need to have a car or cab to get there and back, unless you bring some walking boots in the winter to walk up/down it.
With heels, it's advisable to take transport.

Understated posh hotel where you'll not be bothered even if you are someone.
Cultural events in the hotel and Sils Maria are excellent for a mountain resort.
Close to village but higher up on a hill with a view. Try to get a view towards lake on Maloja side instead of the village.

Room Tip: Great hotel for families- 3 generations...5 star without allure: You can be yourself and feel comfo...
