“Just L-O-V-E this hotel!”

Other hotels may have better views, more central locations, and lifts, but I just love the Steinbock. I have been mulling over the reasons for this special affection. The food is great - but I've had good food elsewhere. One of the reasons is the quaint intimacy of the hotel but with access to the pool and spa facilities at its next-door, grander, sister hotel, the Walther. Another reason is the friendliness of the staff. One of the Walther family is on hand to greet the guests at dinner, front desk is helpful with tips, and there are lots of options, like ski guides, walking guides, mountain bikes, invitation to drinks and hors d-oeuvre. It's just a really fun, relaxing place to be in a fabulous area of Switzerland.

We arrived in Pontresina only to discover that indeed the tour books were correct. Many of the smaller towns literally shut down in May. The Steinbock was one of the few hotels open and we considered ourselves fortunate to be able to book a room here on our arrival. It is a lovely hotel - associated with the Hotel Walther next door. Our room was small with low beams (had to watch your head) but an excellent view. The shower and W.C. were down the hall - not what we'd prefer - but the hotel wasn't full so this did not pose a problem. Our room was "half-board" so we not only had a delicious Swiss breakfast we also enjoyed a fine dinner. It was fixed menu and we heard some other visitors complain about no choices but we enjoyed it very much. The pool facilities at the Hotel Walther were available even if it wasn't open so my husband enjoyed a swim in their beautiful, indoor pool. The staff was very accommodating; the computer was free to use in the lobby; and since there was no public transportation in town during our visit, they graciously gave us rides to and from the train station. Pontresina is a lovely little Swiss town - just awfully quiet in May.....

We were immediately impressed by the friendly greeting, by name, from a receptionist dressed in traditional costume, at The Hotel Steinbock . Like many recently modernised, but essentially historic, Swiss alpine hotels, there is a lot of light coloured pine about, particularly in the spacious bedrooms and the dining rooms. Our room faced west, towards Val Roseg and St Moritz, and had all the essential facilities.
We stayed on bed and breakfast terms (breakfast was the usual, very ample selection) but ate in the public restaurant (stubli) a couple of times and were not disappointed.
The Steinbock stands right on the village street, just near the edge of the village, but isn't noisy (there is a bypass around Pontresina). Immediately to the side is a pleasant outdoor sitting area where the hotel served complementary canapes and wine at around 18.00, and where you could eat dinner if you wished.
The Steinbock's trump card is that you are entitled as a guest to use the leisure facilities of the Hotel Walther, next door. Where the Steinbock is all modest, rural charm, the Walther is grandiose, Edwardian spendour. But it does have a very nice spa and swimming pool (check out the website with the photos of the naked man and woman). You can also borrow bicycles and explore the miles of tracks and quiet roads. I would particularly recommend the path through the forest to St Moritz, via a cafe and swimming lake in a clearing.
The hotel is at one end of the (very) long main street of Pontresina - which is very smart, quiet and pedestrian-friendly. It's only a few minutes walk from Surovas station, which is no more than a tiny halt on the Rhaetian Bahn (RhB) Bernina line. The main station for Pontresina is a 10 minute walk or 5 minute bus ride away. From there, you can catch the very efficient RhB trains to St Moritz, Tirano, Scuol-Tarasp or, by changing at samedan, to Chur. The journeys in all directions are scenically magnificent, among the most spectacular train journeys in the world. At Samedan you can pick up the Glacier Express and, from Chur, you connect to the SBB mainline.
The Engadine is a lovely, relatively undiscovered region and Pontresina is a beautiful location for a fairly active Summer train riding / walking / cycling holiday but I'm not convinced it would have enough skiing in the winter, without travelling around a lot to the various lifts and gondolas.
