“Typical Swiss 3*/4* hotel with great personal service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2014

We really liked it here. I had booked this hotel for a skiing holiday with two friends as I was tired of catered chalets and wanted proper hotel service and meals cooked by chefs who had been to catering college rather than by a gap year student anxious to hit the slopes after tidying away the breakfast dishes. I was keen to try St Moritz itself but prices there were prohibitively expensive and the public transport network here is so good that travel to the lifts in different areas was easy and painless, and transport passes were included in the price of the room. This is a step up from popular resorts, the demographic is refreshingly different and the champagne climate ensured superb skiing. The Upper Engandin and Bernina really are superb for all levels of skiing.

OK, so the hotel itself? These guys couldn't be more accommodating - we were picked up from Samedan railway station (though they will happily collect you from Pontresina or St Moritz too) and check in was easy and very friendly. Lovely rooms, warm, well furnished in typical Swiss style. The spa was excellent, good pool and all the facilities you'd expect, with robes and slippers provided. All the spa facilities were well maintained, very clean and warm.

Food? We were on the half-board tariff which represented good value. Breakfasts were great, with a huge buffet choice including a hot English-style option of bacon and scrambled eggs as well as all the other continental offerings of breads, pastries, cereals, meats, cheeses and juices as well as a huge range of dairy products. Coffee was served in pots if requested - I'd recommend you ask for this to be done as occasionally it was, during a busy breakfast service, hard to attract the waiting staff's attention to request a fill up of a coffee cup.

Dinner was generally of a high standard though on a couple of nights, we found the food somewhat average. For the other five nights, it was very acceptable indeed. The presentation of the main dishes was imaginative and of good restaurant standard. The salad buffet at dinner was also very much a high point with a good choice of dishes.

The bar drinks were, we felt, very expensive. Too expensive in fact. ChF 60 (approx £42) for two Amarettos and two gin and tonics is, by any standards, an awful lot of money. We found that the Post Hotel opposite was far cheaper and I must confess that on a few occasions we went across the road for drinks.

All the slightly negative points were offset by the truly superb Swiss service. Friendly and efficient, we were made to feel welcome and comfortable at all times, nothing was ever too much trouble.

Also, for Rhätische Bahn fans, this is an excellent base for the Berninabahn and the rest of the RhB as the hotel is a short 10 minute walk from Pontresina Station. The Bernina Pass in winter is an experience in itself. I'd also recommend this place for summer holidays, having holidayed in this area before during the summer months.

All in all, a great hotel. Would we come back? Yes. Would I recommend it? Yes. Is this a good destination for a skiing holiday? Yes. Was it better than a catered chalet? Oh, yes!

Dear Elaine and Jonothan

Thank you very much for your stay at Rosatsch Pontresina and your very detailed comments.
It is great to learn that you enjoyed the facilities such as the rooms, Spa, Restaurant, etc.

As you said, the combination of a smooth transport/ check in and a comfortable room is equally important to a good Spa, Breakfast and Dinner. We try to deliver this in an uncomplicated way.

Within the Area, Pontresina has a very good value for money, among the 3 and 4 star properties within the village, Rosatsch has probably one of the highest, too. Beverages price we compare with our 3 and 4 stars competitors and we are also in a fair range, in spite the swiss prices are generally a bit more costly than in other areas of the Alps for known reasons such as a strong Swiss Franc.

Please contact us anytime when your plans bring you back to Pontresina, maybe summertime.

Kind regards,
Ralph.

We recently spent over a week here and mostly loved it. So first the great. The staff is consistently friendly and usually quite helpful. On day 2 they give you a wish list to fill out. We asked for three things and all but one were delivered. The one that wasn't was no surprise so it wasn't a big deal. However as an example we said we missed not having a clock in the room. To our surprise the next day they delivered a small alarm clock to our room. The facilities are terrific and the location is great for the buses. So why not an excellent review you might ask. Well here were our small (one not so small) issues:

1 - the one bigger issue was that on one weekend during our stay a group of families (we thought related to the owner) came with young children. Well the parents made absolutely no effort to control their children. So these children literally ran, and I do mean ran, wild all over the hotel. Of course it first is the parent's responsibility to control their children but if they refuse to then the owners and their staff have a responsibility to control them for the benefit of their other paying guests.

2 - The restaurant staff occasionally had that unique waitstaff ability to look everywhere in the room except where you are sitting. It did not happen all the time but when it did it certainly was annoying such as when you were waiting to go hiking and you could not get anyone's attention to place your dinner order.

3 - Taking half board is often a way to keep your dining expense down when Switzerland. Well the only downside in a hotel like the Rosatsch is that when there are only two choices and neither appeals then you are just out of luck. This is not uncommon but sadly we did have a couple evenings where we wished we could have passed on the half board. However, again I should note that when I told the staff I could not eat cream soups (their standard) they immediately offered me a great bullion every evening.

So in many ways it really is a terrific hotel. Would we stay here again? Yes, but we would want to make sure the relatives weren't in town.

Room Tip: Stay in the Residence. The room size and balcony are excellent. Just do not stay below the third fl...

We had a fantastic and memorable stay in Hotel Rosatsch. We came in family with 1 baby and 1 kid and have enjoyed the kindness of the team, the comfort and quietness of the room and the clean indoor swimmingpool. We also enjoyed very nice days bycicle riding and walking thanks to the advice given by the recepitonnists. The breaksfat and Dinner of the halfpension were great in taste and quantity. the wine card is also impressive. We will never forget our stay in Pontresina. Great value for money!!

The staff at this hotel couldn't be nicer. From the train station pick up to our departure, we couldn't have asked for more. We stayed in the newer building ****. Our room was spacious and had a balcony, but we asked to be changed to one with a better view. No problem. Helpful with luggage and the change even though the porter was off for the evening. The next day we got lots of help with bus/train schedules and hiking ideas. The room key also provides a pass for all local transportation (check to see if there are limitations when you are traveling). Great savings and convenience. The room had much appreciated robes and a minibar, but also something we've never seen before- a loaner back pack. We liked it so much, we bought one to use on our subsequent travels. When we left, the driver took us to St. Moritz to catch our train so we avoided connecting from Pontresina. Had breakfast only. Very good. Also has a washer/dryer available. Great location for hiking.

Room Tip: High floor in the newer building would have the best views.

Pontresina is an excellent place to stay for walking in Engadin. We had chosen Rosatsch Hotel - an excellent choice, it appeared. We were picked up at the railway station at arrival and received friendly at reception desk. Every day we had a hallo and and smile from reception staff.

Our room was spacious and well equipped. The breakfast buffet was delicious and well organised. The staff was very friendly here also.

Where do we begin? At the end - we were so sorry to leave! This was our first time in Pontresina and it won't be our last!! From the moment we arrived in this beautiful village and especially to our hotel (we were picked up at the train station), we felt at home. Our room (#322) in the Stammhaus (3* option) was very spacious and comfortable and we enjoyed relaxing there after hiking all day, although there are many options (bars, lounges, etc.) of places to relax in other parts of the hotel. The new beds and linens were of very high quality and provided us with enjoyable nights of sleep. We decided on half board and that is where our culinary extravaganza began! The chef, who is very talented and creative, had us looking forwad to dinner each night. The dining room area has recently been remodelled and is very charming! We began each evening with an extensive salad bar. We were amazed at the variety of choices! From breads to olives, every kind of lettuce, fish, and very interesting and tasty salads - that could have been our main meal! The second course was a rich soup or juice of your choice if you preferred. You always had a choice of 2 main meals and if that did not please there were always other options. The desserts were exquisitively presented and decadent! Each and every night we were more than satisfied and always pampered. Felipe and Frank, our head waiters, were so pleasant and always aimed to please as did all the staff! Breakfast was just as varied and delicious! We were happy to be hiking every day to counter balance all we ate. The Engadine Valley is now one of our favourite areas in Switzerland because of the numerous hikes (high up and meadow), cable car opportunities with outstanding vistas, easy transportation (buses, trains, cable cars, all free with your stay) and most important - The Hotel Rosatch!! They have recently added a state of the art Spa, pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, yoga room, and many relaxation rooms. We are counting the days until we can return again!! You have exceeded our expectations - what could be better!!

This year the call of the mountains took us to Pontresina, where we stayed in a surprisingly good hotel, the Rosatsch.

LOCATION
Absolutely strategic. The best to reach every valley and village of the region.

ARRIVAL
The welcome was great. At the reception, as pretty much anywhere else we went to subsequently, German and Italian seemed to be the two official languages, which suited us, although English was also spoken. All members of staff were very helpful and every time we had a request action was taken immediately.
We particularly liked having all transport included - we are not stingy, but we appreciated how convenient this solution was, with our room keys being used as tickets. Definitely a great initiative to encourage Pontresina tourism.

ROOM
We had a very spacious double room in the Residence, a separate building connected with the main hotel internally. No risk of getting wet when going to dinner if the weather wasn’t good! Cleanliness met the usual Swiss high standard, as did the softness of the white duvets, the large bathroom with separate shower and separate toilet. The balcony was a plus that we sometimes used in the morning to have a look at the weather and at the temperature (we had room No. 461 on the fourth floor). There was also plenty of room for clothes. Service was very good, bar the fact that the longed-for (mainly because of the chocolates left there! But also, of course, because of the tidying up and bed refreshing) turn-down service was accidentally skipped twice.

PUBLIC ROOMS
The bar lounge on the first floor was large, nicely lit and relaxing. It also had a billiard table, two desks with computers at guests’ disposal, and a juke box (nice songs, we would have appreciated its use free of charge, though!)

A garage was at guests’ disposal. In the winter there is a daily fee to park there, but then we’d appreciate the heating and the certainty of the engine being able to start!

SPA & WELLNESS
The SPA had excellent therapists. We enjoyed many full-body massages because we liked them so much! There was also a good offer running during the week of our stay; a bit of confusion as to which treatments it applied exactly was easily sorted out by the staff. Treatments could also be booked directly from the reception, which was very convenient.
We also used the swimming pool, the yoga room, and the relaxation room. We heard that the steam room and sauna were good too. We also liked the fact that we could help ourselves to lemon water and tea infusions of various kinds.

RESTAURANT
Having looked at the hotel website, we were initially very disappointed to find that the Stübli had closed down and that the Fondini restaurant, highly rated, was only open in the winter. However, we did find out that the chef was the same as the one who cooked in the main restaurant, so the dislike of misrepresentations was largely compensated by the culinary happiness we found in each meal. Variety, quality of food, presentation - all excellent. Breakfast was a very generous and extremely varied buffet, and evening meals, though set menus, always offered a choice of two starters and two main courses, plus the initial buffet salad and the dessert. The only reason why we tried another restaurant one evening was the fact that the hotel offered that option and also we were willing to see a different place. The restaurant seemed to have a great amount of staff, all very pleasant (in comparison, we would have liked to see more than one therapist at a time in the SPA, so as to have a greater choice of times for treatments).

Overall, an excellent choice. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.
