La Pinte du Vieux Manoir
Reviewed June 2, 2013

We had the confirmation lunch for our daughter with 22 people at the Hotel Vieux Manoir and we would not return for a function for business or private.
The location is spectacular and the food was very good, but we were greatly disappointed by the organization of the event.
Below some examples on why we would next time go to another hotel (eg. Hotel Pallafitte in Neuchatel, Beaurivage Lausanne, or Montpellerin Kepinski):
- We were not informed that our room was not in the hotel, but in a separate building (Pinte de Merriez),
- the lady organizing the event was quite arrogant, let my spouse wait for one hour and even did not apologize
- the menus prices were increased from the initial agreement and menus without meat or fish charged the same
- 300 CHF were charged for 6 small plates of apero pastries
- table set-up agreed previously was not respected and dessert changed

As said the location and hotel are very nice, but the hotel staff we met were not up the standard we expect and paid for.

The historic buildings are constantly being upgraded but the hotel never loses its great charm. There is a plethora of staff--this is a classy establishment--and guests are treated with dignity and care. Special touches include turn down service, a superb breakfast with the option of having it in the room, rooms with views of the lake, several styles of accommodation. You pay for all this of course--the place is not cheap--but luxury never is. Dining in the two restaurants is a real treat as food is creative and carefully prepared and served with understated elegance.

Room Tip: We prefer a room (even a small one) facing the lake.

If you want a tranquil rest away from the crowd and to be looked after with excellent service, then this is the place. It is good value for money in Swiss terms, bearing in mind of course that it is not the cheapest country in Europe!

It is a relatively small hotel with the most excellent cuisine and has a beautiful lake at the end of the gardens. It is centrally located in Switzerland making a good base for day touring to Gruyere, Bern, Fribourg, etc.

Enjoy!

Room Tip: Overlooking the lake is best.

We visited the restaurant at this hotel in April 2013. We did not stay at the hotel but we dined in the restaurant and had to opportunity to see the property and the grounds. It is a lovely place and the small town of Morat is well worth a visit. The lake is absolutely beautiful and the town is extremely clean and well kept (like all of wonderful Switzerland). The view from the restaurant Juma is spectacular. If you go, try to be there for sunset.

Now, on to the meal. There were 11 of us for a pre-selected very special dinner. Our 5 courses were all spectacular, probably one of the best meals anywhere in the world. Now if you want details - the five courses were: 1. a lovely dish of two different types of asperagus, one of which was an amazing terrine; 2) soup of young peas and mint with scallops; 3) a white fish from the lake Morat with an incredible bouillon, spinach, carrots and passion fruit; 4) veal steak in croute with herbs and a potato galetter, green beans and morels; 5) a rhubarb tart in what is best described in english as puff pastry - mille feuilles in French.

Both wines were from the local area and were incredible. Swiss wine is all so amazing. Be sure to have local wine any time you are in Switzerland. It is as good as anything you will have in Italy, France or Spain. They just drink it all and don't export much so we don't know about Swiss wine if we live outside the country.

The service was perfect. We were invited as guests so I have no idea how much it cost but I can guess. It was worth every penny (even if I had been the one footing the bill).

We will go back and next time we will stay at this hotel.

This is our fourth stay in this special hotel. It's difficult to find a better location if you are after a relaxing break. The grounds of the hotel are amongst the best I've experienced in Switzerland. The rooms are all individually decorated, ours being a suite in an impressive jungle style. It's worth upgrading to a suite if you can since some of the upper rooms are not that big. There's no fitness room or wellness area in the hotel since they assume that the lake is enough - which it is if the weather is good. One thing, this is a hotel that needs good weather to be really enjoyed. The lake was about 14C during our visit, so swimming was out of the question. We have eaten in both of the restaurants that the Vieux Manoir offers and have always been very happy with the experience. Breakfast is taken in the main restaurant and is also a good experience with a pretty extensive buffet. When the weather is warm, you can take breakfast outside. Murten is a 15 minute walk from the hotel and well worth a visit. If you do not fancy the walk or want to venture further afield, the hotel offers bikes free of charge. You can also rent a small boat with an outboard motor. Service in the hotel is excellent and all of the staff very friendly. In summary, the fact that we have been to this hotel four times now says it all!

Room Tip: A room overlooking the lake is a must. Upgrade to a suite if yôu can since it is well worth the (mod...

each room is individually designed, it is worth the money taking a room on the lake side, very friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, beautiful view on Lake Morat where you can swim.

We stayed in the hotel during the Avenches opera festival and whilst the hotel is beautiful and in a great lakeside location we felt certain aspects of our stay were over priced (even by Swiss standards).

Overall the room was of a very nice standard and what you would expect from a hotel of this quality but the "extras" food, laundry etc were quite frankly over priced.

The food in the restaurant was very nice, the portion sizes were reasonable, the table service was excellent though we thought 250chf for a 2 course lunch with one bottle of wine was very expensive.

As we were off to the opera that night we asked if we could have our clothes for the evening ironed as they had become creased in transit:

1 cotton summer dress (not a difficult dress to iron unlike some of my cocktail dresses)
1 shirt
1 pair of trousers

The bill for this was an astonishing 111chf - it took the staff 15 minutes.

On checking the bill we discovered we had been charged an additional 50% charge for giving the laundry staff less than 12 hours notice! This we think is an unfair penalty given we were only staying one night and therefore it would have been impossible to avoid the express laundry fee. We have stayed in other 4/5 star hotels within Switzerland and the normal rate has been around 60-70chf for the same service this is inclusive of two occasions with my dress being a very fussy cocktail dress which is far from easy to iron!

In all the hotels we have stayed in we have never been penalised for an express laundry charge when we have only stayed for one evening.

This excessive charge was mentioned to the staff on check out and we were told "those are the prices we charge" as you can imagine we were disappointed at this response and do not think our complaint was taken seriously. Also as they don't supply the rooms with an iron or trouser press we were somewhat forced to use this service.

Would I recommend the hotel to other people.... Yes as it's certainly beautiful and the grounds by the lake are the perfect place to relax but make sure you do your own ironing and eat in one of the more charming cheaper restaurants in Murten or Avenches.
