With no particular expectations, we booked a room at the Hotel Europe to make an early-morning connection to the Glacier Express. To our surprise, the hotel offers not only convenience (it is directly across from the rail station, and perhaps a 100-meter walk to connect with the Glacier Express), but very good accommodations. We had a third-floor room, overlooking the station and street, but found it not too noisy. It was very comfortably appointed with modern furnishings throughout, and even had a balcony and nice views in two directions. The bathroom was completely refurbished, and unusually large. For casual food, or to pick up something for the train, the grocery story in the station is much larger and much, much better stocked than expected. Breakfast, on the hotel's second floor the next morning, was an especially generous and delicious spread, nice before a day on the train. And as we found when walking up into the town before our morning connection, Brig becomes handsome--winding cobbled streets, beautiful old buildings, and an important public colonnade and associated sculpture park--just a few blocks from the station; worth a stroll, with your camera. What we thought would be a very routine stopover in fact had comforts and pleasures to offer, as well as the hotel's obvious convenience. Including breakfast, the room charge for the night was 134 CHF. Cheaper accommodations are probably available, but none more convenient if you are lugging baggage, and we thought the quality and value offered were more than worth it.
