We flew into Zurich, but our destination was the Dolomites. We were looking for a nice hotel not too far from the airport, on the way to Cortina. Our travel agent recommended the Grand Hotel Quellenhof in Bad Ragaz. Where??? We had never heard of the hotel OR the town. But she's never let us down, so we agreed.
It was snowing when we landed in Zurich, but our rented Audi had snow tires, and off we went. We must have missed a turn, because instead of driving there on the motorway, we wound up on a two-lane road alonog the lake. It was so beautiful, and there was hardly any traffic. It took a little longer, but we found the hotel easily.
And what a find! The Grand Hotel Quellenhof is just plain gorgeous. We were greeted warmly as we drove up and were whisked into the impressive lobby. A few minutes later we were in our room, a spacious Jr. Suite with a balcony overlooking the snow-filled grounds. A feeling of peace settled over us, and we were ready to stay forever.
Everyrthing about the room was perfect. Lots of closet space and drawers and shelves. One could bring all their clothes and stay for a month! The bed was confy and the piilows were fluffy. The bathroom was amazing . . . three rooms really . . . and it even had a flatscreen TV. What a treat! Unfortunately, we had only booked one night. Big mistake. This place is worth a lot more time.
The Grand Hotel Quellenhof is part of a complex that includes the Grand Hotel Bad Ragaz, a 4-star hotel that is soon to be upgraded to 5-stars. There are 5 restaurants. We only had time to sample two of them: Olives and the Abtestube. They were both wonderful, but the gourmet restaurant Abtestube was really special. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, without a hint of stuffiness or pretension -- but the food is beautfully prepared and elegantly presented. We ordered the fixed price dinner with a bottle of local wine, and every mouthful was delicious!
Earlier in the day, we had the pleasure of visitng the spa. We had booked massages, to ease the aches an pains of a transatlantic flight in coach class. The massages didn't disappoint. The spa is an oasis of calm and best of all, no one tried to sell us anything!
For those of us who prefer to travel without a laptop, there are three complimentary internet points throughout the property. Admittedly, we were there in the off-season, but I never had to wait to check my email. That was very nice.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable experience at the Grand Hotel Quellenhof. I highly recommend this hotel, and I can't wait to return!
