“Very relaxing and romantic location - excellent spa!”
Reviewed August 18, 2010

I have just returned from a lovely mini-break with my husband for his birthday. We originally booked into the spa for a massage but then decided to stay one night as well. Very glad we did! We booked a 'Family Room' direct through the hotel's website (see pictures below). It was two separate rooms with an ensuite bathroom. The family room had two large sofas, a flat-screen television, tea/coffee making facilities, full length mirror. Very nice if you want to have visitors for the evening.

The bedroom was absolutely beautiful. The bed was the most comfortable bed I've slept in at any hotel. It was a super king-- enormous!-- and so comfortable. We stayed on a Tuesday night and the hotel was very quiet and peaceful. We hardly noticed any other guests at the hotel. It was absolute bliss to not hear people talking loudly while walking through the hall as you do in some hotels --- in fact, even if they were people talking in the hall, I don't think it would have been possible to hear them because we had another room (the family room) between us and the hall door. There were heavy solid wood doors between all rooms (presumably fire doors) which keeps all sound out quite well.

The Kukana Spa was excellent and the original reason we stayed at the hotel. The manager, Raymond, went out of his way to make us feel welcome and greeted us by name when we arrived. The staff were equally friendly and professional. We both had a back, neck, and shoulder massage. The atmosphere was perfect and really allowed total relaxation.

This hotel was recently rebuilt following a fire that completely destroyed it a few years ago. The new building is very beautiful, particularly the bedrooms we saw. The only drawbacks to this hotel for me was that there was no pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, etc. Also, the restaurant was set up in a function room (where we had our full English breakfast, cooked to order) rather than a purpose built restaurant. It lacked character and warmth because of this but the service was still good and the food was good. However, I understand that planning permission is being sought for a restaurant extension in a massive conservatory and a pool with all the extras (sauna, etc). Construction should commence in the next 6-12 months, I've been told. Once these works are complete, this should be a hotel I will be returning to again and again for a special occasion. I would definitely recommend this hotel, particularly for couples.

Other people interested in staying here may want to know that there was only Freeview television available in the rooms. This was not an issue for us as this is what we have at our own home, we were only staying for one night, and were busy that evening anyway. Instead of watching television, we had a lovely walk around the grounds of the hotel, viewed the waterfall over the pond filled with fish, and sat on the swing under one of the huge mature trees.

I can't believe that there have been no TA reviews for this hotel! This is a new extended hotel opened in about 2007 after the previous one burned down.

The result is a Georgian styled hotel which has a very modern up-to-date interior. It is still 'new' so no sign of wear or tear. We attended a family wedding at this 'luxurious' hotel, staying 2 nights and had an enjoyable time. Our room was a good size but the bathroom was quite cramped with a large shower, sink and toilet. It had a toilet roll on a stand, but this was behind the bathroom door and was hit by the door each time you went into the bathroom. the room had good furniture lovely decor and a comfortable king sized bed. There is Tea and coffee in the room but no fridge or bottled water. I would suggest that it is mainly used for weddings and other events, but there were several business men and woman staying.
It has at least three very large spacious themed bridal suites. I visited the middle suite, 'William and Mary' if you want to stay for a special event I would certainly book that suite..... don't know the cost but you would love it! It has free wi fi, there is a very good spa in the hotel and a small gym. In the grounds there is also a florist who seem to provide most of the flowers for all the events. The hotel is set in about 12 acres of land which are landscaped and have a number of tables outside, an wooden type of Gazeebo to sit in and in the far corner a childs play area.
The negatives for this lovely hotel are that there is only a small longe area to drink in at night, particularly when they have prepared the other rooms for breakfast or an event.
Breakfast was okay, there were insufficient staff when about 12 of us arrived, we had to arrange our own table and setting it because the staff (2 maybe 3) were in the kichen or serving another table. The service did get better on the second day, but they just were not prepared for a large group.
They have a lift but it was out of action for two days, apparently waiting for parts, so if you have trouble walking, as did one of our party, they have to walk up 25 steps to the first floor and more to the second. I expect this was a one off, but it was a problem.
As the weather was hot and sunny we were troubled outside by wasps, at least 3 guests were stung despite the wasp catchers on the outdoor tables and during the evening of the wedding many guests outside were bitten, my wife had 8 on one leg alone. Bug spray maybe an idea in August.
Despite the negatives we did have a comfortable stay and I would stay here again
