I deviated from my usual careful research on hotel options (guide book recommendations, TripAdvisor/Fodors reviews) and reserved a room at the Gasthof Inselgraben in Lindau. The allure of a several hundred year old building, convenient location, low price and free parking, coupled with the relative dearth of information on Lindau, led to my error.
We arrived at Lindau later than expected. The first warning should have been the odor in the restaurant in which the proprietor was working when we arrived. The smell of permeating cooking oil was overpowering. But hey, it was late and we were tired. My second warning was climbing up the dark stairway and through a weird feeling hallway, past an open utility room with stuff strewn about, down a dimly lit hallway to our room. Still--how bad could it be? Besides, it was late. My third warning should have been the room--very modestly appointed, thin curtain over the window and quite dark--though very clean.
Being a bit of a wuss, I ignored the warnings and took the room. My spouse, however, was much more direct about her feelings--the place creeped her out. So, we ended up finding a room elsewhere. The lesson learned? Make use the information sources that are out there and make sure you know what you're getting into before choosing a hotel on the road less traveled.
